I think they should have never revealed his name or like you said make it Jack Napier White. Though I can understand why they went with Jack White as that is one of Joker's alias.
I think Bruce had it right in The Three Jokers. "It doesn't matter what The Joker's real name is. It never was." Meaning it's what he does that defines him.
I guess that's true after all a names just a name.
The last vestige of understanding that not everything NEEDS to be explained in order to be enjoyed. Same as Wolverine (although, I understand why Marvel did it... they didn't want Fox To tell the origin of Wolverine, so they did it themselves), modern writers simply don't understand that a big part of the appeal of certain characters is the mystery surrounding their origins. All those different versions of the Joker that have appeared in different media for decades... none of them would've been the same (and probably not as good) had the Joker had an origin story and a name.
Oh well. Nothing good lasts forever.
@@lincolnpascual I mean I think most people who like a joker pretty much has the killing joke origin and name as canon. It's a small grain of sand dropped into the sea compared to the desert of the character. They can still give him different origins.

Joker never knew Batman’s name, as he never wanted to know it. He always felt it would ruin the mystique and the joke for him. He even killed someone in the comics who was trying to tell him who Batman really was.

Yeah. Giving a name to one of the most mysterious characters in comic history really does take away what made the Joker so iconic.
It can, but if it's that important then writers should never have Batman know or even hint that he knows Joker's real name ever. All that does make a plot point that you have to address eventually and if you don't it stops being "iconic" or a "mystery" and starts becoming more of a cop-out where the meta reason is right there.
Basically, if you mention that Batman knows who is behind Joker's mask rip it off, but if you don't want to don't set yourself up for it. Personally, I get it with the iconic shit, but it's been several years just take the mask off. Everything is gonna get rebooted shortly afterwards anyway.

It's interesting how they made his name Jack White since that was apparently "one of his oldest aliases" according to Oracle in Batman Arkham Asylum. This reveal basically tells us that it WASN'T an alias. Joker used his REAL NAME for certain things, and no one ever knew. I don't know how I feel about this, but it's definitely intriguing.

I honestly loved the fact that The Joker didn't have a name for many years and instead represented a dark comedic twist that basically made viewers and readers alike scratching our heads trying to debunk his true name questioning our own sanity. I thought his name was John Doe like the one mentioned in the tell tale series Joker Origin. That is why I love The Joker he can be anything or anybody you want just like in the three Jokers story. He literally gives any writer the freedom to go crazy lol
I guess if you love contrived nonsense then enjoy. DC treats his insanity as superpower, but the reality is the police would had little trouble figuring out who he was. He is entirely too infamous of a criminal to not have his past dragged into the light. It remained a mystery purely due to lazy writing to drum up drama where there wasn't anything noteworthy happening.
Him having name is just a mundane detail. They list tall he is and other physical traits in his profile, having that single box unchecked wasn't leaving much to the imagination. Honestly putting the context of his name went unsaid because Batman and the police were protecting his family makes way more sense than everyone in the DC is magically bamboozled by the Joker's craziness into something not being able to figure out his indentity. That is just silly and makes no sense in a world where people with psychic powers can easily probe his mind or talk to ghost or some other crazy tech to deciper his identity.
I think he should have a name without an identity he’s evil for the sake of evil with no origin.
He pondered the different potential origins of how he became the Joker, saying "... sometimes I remember it this way, sometimes I remember it that way. If I have to have a history, I prefer it to be multiple choice." That mystery has been maintained for a lot of years.

I'm surprised that, so far, there's no fan of the Arkham video series made a connection that "Jack White" is a reference to the alias that the Joker used while he was funding Dr. Young's Titan Project in Arkham Asylum. After going to the Batcave for the first time, in the sewers where you find the door to get a Killer Croc jumpscare, Oracle mentioned a "Jack White" and Batman confirming that it's one of Joker's alias.

I understand your perspective on keeping his name a mystery. But as a 40 year old comic book fan, lifelong comic book fan. I get happy seeing this kind of stuff. It's like Logan (James howlett) finally getting a name after 25 years. I'm glad to have something solid even if it's not meaningful. But I'm sure they'll make something of it

In my opinion Gotham is great especially the Riddler and Penguin, and thier "jokers" are very underrated, Cameron Monaghan is a phenomenal actor
huge batman fan here, and I will say that most people that didnt like it because they werent able to stop themselves from comparing the two entities. In order to enjoy the show(as much as you and I both did) you need to detach yourself from what you know about batman, and enjoy the show for what it gives you; great acting, and better story telling

Um... It doesn't make sense that the Joker would only have one name given that we just had Geoff Johns' Three Jokers story. Each Joker would have his own name... So, theoretically, Jack Oswald White, Jack Napier, and Arthur Fleck could ALL be canon names for the Three Jokers in current Canon DC Continuity. The question would be which Joker came first.
Also, remember that Geoff Johns described his Jokers as the Comedian, the Criminal, and the Clown...
Arthur Fleck was a professional clown. Jack Napier was a gangster. And per the White Knight story, Jack White was a failed stand-up comedian, similar to Alan Moore's The Killing Joke (which is now Canon). So there you have it... the Comedian (Jack Oswald White), the Criminal (Jack Napier), and the Clown (Arthur Fleck).

I actually kinda do like that Joker has a name now( he always had many names figuratively). Hear me out: Giving a name(s) to Joker made him human in doing that, it proves Joker is no longer human but a monster we all love. Since whatever reason DC says that made Joker become Joker; it holds true to what Joker represents/essence,” It just takes one bad day, one person, one fruit fly, one joke, one push or thought to make a human go mad”. It also makes it sort of creepy and cool since his boring somewhat common names shows anyone & everyone is Crazy.
Hey. They actually mention Joker's name "Jack White" in Batman: Arkham Asylum during the part of the game when you are climbing up the sewer back to the surface. But "Jack White" was actually Joker's alter-alias according to Oracle in the game. But I am surprised that Jack Oswald White is Joker's real name. But yeah. I wanted to remind you about "Jack White" in Batman: Arkham Asylum. Fun little fact that I wanted to tell you.

I tend to like the anonymity of the Joker- he could be anyone and everyone, kind of deal. That's what makes him so scary- he could have been your next-door neighbour for you all know. Certainly interesting, but I'm not sure about it. I'm more curious about where the storyline is heading.
Honestly I prefer when the origin is never perfectly confirmed which means that there’s room for fan interpretation. However it doesn’t bother me that they revealed his origin and real name, especially since (let’s be honest) all of this could get ret conned away after one bad day at DC comics.

yeah this was revealed in the Batman Arkham games. Originally on the batman Arkham website it had character profiles of everyone in the game much like in the game that you could also unlock through riddler trophies. Before the game was released on the Jokers profile it read Real name: Jack White. so really this was softly revealed about 11 years ago. Later the website changed it to unknown as it says in the game. The Oswald part was a new wrinkle though.
The long term plans are my concern. I don't mind them giving him a name like Jack White as it is so generic. The Oswald does make you think of Penguin but there shouldn't be much connection as Oswald is Cobblepots first name and the jokers age makes it clear he wouldn't be named after him, like a long lost son. The fact they confirmed the Joker's backstory did concern me and now that they gave him a name linked to it makes me worried they indeed will go ahead and give some dumb meaning. As it is, it doesn't really change much. It narrows some options but not many. My hope is they are setting this up so they can get one last publicity payoff on the three jokers plot since it was such a long event, before retconning everything back to start anyway. They realize there are a lot of people who love an Elseworlds esque one-shot where the Joker is confirmed, that people are a little done with the string of reboot crisis lately and won't like keeping the joker revealed forever. To soften the blow of the current crisis, they will do everything they can with the Jokers origins as a gimik during it and them wipe the slate clean to satisfy the masses. Most do not want Joker yo have a revealed backstory and most don't like the retconning Crisis we've been given so it will only be incentive to go along with another. Expire the what-if?, then immediatly undo it to fix the Joker back.

I loved the origin story that the three jokers gave us because it gave more detail on the joker's origin without spoiling the mystery and thrill of who he is. It's like we know him without knowing who he really is. The story confirmed that the killing joke origin of joker is legit, not only that but he also have a child and wife somewhere, but they still hid his identity by introducing 2 more jokers. We were left with a question? Is he a old criminal that went insane? did he really fall in the vat of acid? is it even an accident? did joker created joker? If so who is the first joker?

I do like the Joker creates Joker idea as after the 2019 Joker came out and saw similarities Jouaquin's Joker had with Heath's Joker lead me to believe that Joker was a prequel of sorts to Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. Sounds farfetched I know

I like the idea of the Joker not being a singular person, but rather a sequence of notjobs always trying to outperform one another against the Bat. Of course, this would have to be re-conned in as the Joker was often in Arkham or prison which would have allowed the others to step up and they didn't. Either way, having the Joker as a man with no name was better.

The Three Jokers is imo one of the best Joker stories. It's got a lot of depth and while I don't like how Batman defends Jason in it at all, I think it portrays the Jokers in a very interesting way
In one version, mainly in Capullo's stories, the Joker's real name was though to be Redmund Hudd, aka Bruce's psychiatrist

Joker's real name is Jeremiah Wayne Bruce Wayne's older brother reveal through the TV series of Gotham the 2014 version goes on the path of the same character of Jerome. Character story arc.
Its like an "oh, okay"moment where you learn it but its underwhelming.
Kinda like that skit in Harley Quinn when the scacrecrow took off Bruce's mask but Joker was more annoyed how Wayne Corp still isnt getting their electric car out.

Wait Jack Napier was just the names of a couple actors? That a crazy coincidence considering Jack Napier is actually a perfect pun for someone who would be the Joker since a deck of cards has both Jokers and Jacks and in spanish a Deck of cards is sometimes refered as "Naípes" which is pretty darn close to "Napier" (even if the pronunciations is kinda different "Nah-ee-pehs")

Jack Napier is actually a play on the word “jackanapes” used to describe a sardonic, vain man. It’s rather archaic. But it fits with the character traits displayed by Jack Napier pre-Joker.
Jack Napier was also inspired by a slang name for the Joker as a playing card - Jack of Naipes. But I've always thought of the original origin of the Joker - a villain with a red mask who fell into chemicals that disfigured him.
Man, I really loved the Joker in the White Stripes. Who knew he was such a talented musician.
Jack White happens to also be one of the Jokers alias's that he uses when he needs to hide the fact that he is the Joker. It's the name he used to get Doctor Young from the Arkham Asylum game to make the Titan formula.
I wish they would stop trying to reveal the jokers origin or name. It can never be as good as the mystery. They keep revealing this stuff, then backpedaling or retconning. That nonsense make it all irrelevant. And the 3 jokers was dumb.
I really hope Jack White isn't his real name, and if it is then I won't consider it Canon. His "real" name doesn't matter, he is and always will be the joker

I honestly always knew the joker’s real name as ‘Jack White’ from the Arkham games, cause he used that name while tricking Doctor Young, so this doesn’t honestly surprise or change anything for me, but it’s cool that it is actually now his official comic name!

That's a cool watchband you got there! Looks awesome! My opinion of name of Joker is I like his answer for the "One bad day" series... "If I'm going to have an origin, I'd prefer it to be multiple choice!" Not knowing, and knowing he's crazy to begin with, keeps him unpredictable. Batman follows Logic which is structured and leaves a trail, but the Joker is crazy with a trail of twists and turns... it makes them mirror very well.

Although I did like the name Arthur from the movie, I do think Jack has a better ring to it so I'm glad they're using that. And I think White as the surname is interesting because you could say maybe it represents The Joker's white face paint/make up that he uses. That's how I see it at least.

Yea in Arkham asylum, Oracle went over joker's alias "Jack White" when referring of the conversations between Dr Young and Joker himself. I like how he used that name despite actually being his real name making people assume that its more than likely not really his name ultimately throwing them off his tracks. Maybe I'm overthinking this but that intrigued me when making that connection
Why's the name of Gotham's_Joker such a big secret apart from him being called Jack_Napier in the 90s Batman Movies and him being called Arthur_Fleck in Joaquin phoenix Joker movie?
I strong side with the theory that Arthur Fleck is in the future. I think he just inserted himself into the mythos. He's the second Joker. He heard about the Joker, Batman, all that happened decades prior, and just imagined himself being the Joker and in turn, becoming the New Joker.
If they're committing to a reveal, it's likely they're committing to a pretty large-scale retcon as well, which likely means that this reveal is relatively worthless to the upcoming DC comics universe after the dust settles if that's the case. There will be no payoff to be had for anyone knowing that the previous universe's remaining Joker's real name was Jack White if the new universe's Joker's real name isn't Jack White.
The Joker isn't a name, he's a force.
It wouldn't be hard for this joker name to be thrown out the window, by Batman saying. "That's not his name, the joker lied to you" so again we could be thrown back to square one.
IT'S INTERESTING that Joker's name is now Jack White, because THAT was his name revealed in the Batgirl DLC in Batman: Arkham Knight, in hidden audio recordings you can find.

I hope Geoff Johns's work with the Joker just gets retconned. Making the Killing Joke origin canon, missing the story's point, demystifying the Joker... Ugh.

I really thought she was going to tell Thomas, that he had put another bun in her oven(whether with the tampering of another character or not), the last time they were cozy, and she had the child, who then somehow ended up in the main DC universe, etc.
That would be been too soap operatic, but I just don’t think any name would’ve worked very well.

I'm glad they dropped his name. I always thought that the 1980s Killing Joke Comic issue came before the 80s Batman film. I read that old comic, and "Jack Napier," was his name in his memories. Alternatively, I feel the comics still hold Canon and drop bits and pieces here and there. I would say that his Canon name for the original Joker being Jack Oswald White still holds true to the Killing Joke Joker, as in the Flashpoint comics, Martha talking about Jack and the panel for it mimics the same art style in Joker's flashbacks of his family. What's very interesting is that I've always thought the jokers true name could be Melvin White. In the Dark Knight, Alfred is looking through possible identities of the joker and that's the one they mentioned in the movie. I do kind of wish it was Jack Napier White though.

I once thought that The Joker's real name would have been Joseph Kerr.
But trip on this:
It would make some sense that if he went by Joe, then he would have shorten his name to Joe Kerr, thus bringing forth the name "Joker".

Apparently, you can also find his real name in the Arkham Asylum game. There's an audio recording where the name "Jack White" is called and then Joker's voice appears. So, I guess its been out for over a decade.

It’s funny, asking the chair who killed his parents was an obvious test, and then we thought as readers the next question was genuine, but it wasn’t: he knew the jokers name and knew only something with all the knowledge would share that info. So that question was also a test of the chair, it’s just that he was expecting the name he knew and not that there were 3 jokers.

I will confess that I like the idea of knowing Jokers name. True, it ruins the mystery, but it does give him a more human element and sort of grounds him to reality. However, while it removes the question of who he is, it doesn't remove what he is; an agent of chaos, anarchy, and insanity with little to no sense of remorse or compassion. He will always still be the Joker even if we know who he is under that nightmarish grin.

I can't for the life of me remember the full context but I'm almost positive the name Jack White was also used in the dark knight. Nolans 2nd bat film. It was one of the rare daytime scenes where Bruce was trying to track Joker down, Alfred drops that exact name & an address. Leading Bruce to find a bunch of guys tied up. I think it was just before Joker attempts to shoot someone while disguised as an officer. Again my memory of the details are hazy but I feel like I remember that name being used. Jack White.
