My first DSLR was an EOS 30D and the R10 really shows how hugely cameras have improved since then. This makes me really excited for the RP mark 2 or whatever they end up calling it.
I mean the 30d had a top LCD and better burst shot/shutter speed :) lol. We definitely compromise despite the amazing improvements in cameras, particularly active focus tracking.
But that's the thing that made me sell my RP and regret bothering with it. It was slow. Awkwardly slow. I thought I was potentially getting an M50 with a full frame, and that was far from the case. Both the R and RP were underwhelming at the time. Just hyped because Canon mirrorless. I'd love to try R10/R7/R6/etc. however. They don't seem like hamfisted mirrorless attempts. They look polished.
Sadly, Canon's products still have me glancing over at Sony with lustful eyes. Especially the prices of Canon's mirrorless vs Sony. Which is what caught me out. I thought Canon was gonna undercut everybody with amazing cameras and prices... But more recently Sony did that, with the a7c/a6600 and even the zv-e10.
They ended up calling it the r8...
I remember when Canon first brought out the EOS R they kind of made it clear they were moving into the premium market ONLY with the mirrorless EOS R mount. What I think changed their minds was Nikons Z50 and how popular its been, I'm really glad to see the R7 has 2 (yes 2) UHS II card slots though I think Sony's multi-card slot is the way to go.
The Nikon Z50 and the Zfc have shown the great interest in the market for APS-C. When comparing the R10 to the Nikon Z50, I would still prefer the latter, even if the Canon is newer: better body and more lenses to choose from. The R7 is another league that Nikon doesn't have an answer for yet.
I'm curious to see if Sony will follow suit. Knowing how they like to show up Canon, we'll probably be seeing a new body from them in six months or so 😁
@@ziginox I think it will be less time than that, you have to remember it's been some time since they last released an interchangeable lens APS-C mirrorless camera so it wouldn't surprise me if they already had something to "take off the shelf" before the end of the summer.
Amazing bowling skills from Kai. Almost killed everyone though.
Tony only brings us pictures of the Cameras & Kai brings us the real thing. 🥂
Yes! My favorite UA-camrs have the new goods from Canon!
I just got an R10. Using an adapter so I didn’t have to buy a bunch of new glass. So far I’m loving it. Definitely isn’t quiet though, and a bit of a “Rebel” feel. I don’t mind that tho. Saved a LOAD on glass compared to switching to Sony and the autofocus is a joy even with Ef/Ef-s glass.
Edit: as someone who doesn’t get value from an external flash, I was pleasantly surprised to find a flash on the R10. Lil flash can go a long way. 🤘
Does the flash has wireless flash trigger ?
I am very excited about the R7, maybe this will light a fire under other manufacturers. being a Sony shooter it is frustrating for the last five years we have been askingFor a high-end APSC camera and we're still getting the A6xxx little toys with a recycled sensor . I love my A1, but I would love to be able to have a good APSC body I could trust with a good battery life and good ergonomics
What the heck kind of bloody hell bowling alley is that?!?!? Looks like an A Clockwork Orange set!
Lenses Canon! Lenses! You’ve made the bodies. Now support them with glass like a 16-55 f2.8, 10-24mm f4, a cheap 35mm f1.8, and a 16mm f2
My guess is RF-S crop glass will be rather limited, and you'll need to stump up cash for the FF RF lenses instead. Or, embrace Fujifilm! ;)
I mean, their first APSC RF bodies were LITERALLY just announced hours ago so give em a few months and they will start compiling an arsenal
@@_mel.low_official This is true, issue I see is the two RF-S lenses so far aren't exactly exciting, and the good RF lenses cost a fair chunk of change. Folks who didn't have plans to upgrade to RF FF would probably get better bang for their buck with another system. Just feels like a bit of a repeat of EF-S and EF-M, just with a new mount.
@@_mel.low_official The products were announced hours ago but development took years. The fact that those years of development ended in two slow kit lenses show that they intend the aps-c line as a way to have future consumers of their full frame line, or that their consumers of aps-c cameras seldom get prime lenses.
@Steve Gray aside from the fact that all the full frame lenses are compatible with Canon APS-C bodies so once you have bought your camera it actually makes no sense to be buying EFS (APS_C) lenses aside from occasional cheap bargains
I'll stick with my trusty 6D until they make more glass for the R series. I'm not giving up my 35-85-135 Holy Trinity that fast...
Maybe consider getting the EF to RF canon adaptor, their cheap and you can use any lens from canon and third parties which fit either EF or EF-S.
@@technicboy5917 True that's an option.
@@technicboy5917 You can put RF glass on a 6D body with the adapter?
@@phill5917 No, only the other way around (EF lenses to RF body).
LOL there is something call adapter
Time to redo the legendary stress test of EOS 7 similar to what you did for 7d camera 📷 a long time ago 🙂
Well done Canon! Good opportunity to jump into the RF mount while keeping my old and still good Canon 6D from 2012. First time I will have an APS-C.. Will go with the R7 and start with RF and not RF-S lenses as next stop would be to buy an R5 when the R5 Mk ii is available and prices for R5 go down to reasonable levels
Kai you know what needs to be done next with R7... you remember 7d durability test? :D :D :D
The death of EOS-M.
That's a good testing environment, aka not very favorable to canon showing off good images .. Indoors, dark, weird colors etc. Cameras did well in that sense IMO
How does this play vs the RP? Which is full frame, but .. Similar price?
What impressed me most was that both the R7 and R10 shoot 10-bit 422 4K.
Good thing we have Fuji and Sony for APSC.
Hmm, although Sony haven't been doing much with their APS-C lineup recently and even suspended orders/production of several models as they focussed on their full frame system.
I hope they launch a lot of cheap lenses now that they have a reason, although the RP was already a reason
Awesome! Thanks for highlighting the R10! Every other reviewer brushes it off and barley mentions it but Im primarily a PHOTOgrapher and the R10 looks like the better deal. R7 is very well priced though.
Auto level and pre burst are awesome. My R5 doesn’t have both. I am pre-ordering a R7.
Finally upgrading from my 80D to proper wildlife mirrorless R7. Very nice 🎉
Only a matter of time before they phased out the EF-M. I think this strategy is a good one however since they'll be able to utilize the whole lens lineup. Most customers with limited camera experience I've met who were dead set in buying a mirrorless canon often overlooked the EOS-M system in favor of the RP, R and sometines even an R6. I think the R7 and R10 will give beginners and EF-s users a good and hopefully affordable way to go over to mirrorless and still get something very snappy and competent for all-round uses.
Mirrorless and DSLR cameras apparently have different customers (EF and EF-M both have had customers). I have a feeling that EOS-R is a trick to sell new lenses without the competition of the used EF lens market. Maybe DSRL customers will switch, but maybe they simply won't.
@@eduarddelamettrie7785 I've been working in a camera store since 2017 so I can give you some customer trend insights.
When the EOS R and RP was released the reception wasn't poor but it wasn't really anything to write home about either. Sure people bought them but they rather bought a 5D IV for professional use since the EF lens lineup was and still is great.
It wasn't until the R6 and R5 got released that *a lot* of canon users switched. Usually by trading in their 6D II, 5D III or 5D IV. I even got a few customers who traded in their almost brand new 1DX mk III cameras which is crazy to think about.
The reason I've been told by customers is that the lens lineup is a lot better now than when the R and RP was released plus that the AF systems in the R5 and R6 is vastly better.
I believe that when customers saw that the lens lineup started to really come to form the release of the R5 and R6 really set the great switch in motion. The R7 and R10 will simply speed up the process.
4:18 No black out!
Can we be double confirmed?
Think it could be time to move on from my 80D now quite like that R7
R10 is in my wishlist start from now. 🔥🔥
I've been waiting for something like this from Sony to replace my aging A6300. I don't want to go FF because I don't want to carry heavy glasses, but Sony has been neglecting APS-C. I think this looks great and makes me seriously consider switching to Canon.
How have they been neglecting APS-C when there's the a6600? I don't remember the exact specs rn but wouldn't that be a reasonable upgrade instead of switching systems?
@@DerVicko well they haven't exactly put a lot into it recently, and suspended several models to divert resources to full frame.
Or, just go with Fujifilm?
Rumors say Sony will revisit aps-c this year, so hold your GAS for the next several months
It's strange to me that you want to divorce Sony for not caring about APS-C but then consider moving in with Canon.
You may get good bodies in the R7 and R10, but Canon is well known for making bottom of the barrel APS-C glass and not opening up their mount specs to 3rd parties.
If you want top tier APS-C gear, perhaps give Fuji a look.
First time I see that kind of bowling with the wires holding the pines
R10= M50 sensor + RP body
+ RP lens + RP price
Stonks
In this price segment, there are any other company offering better camera in comparison of canon eos r7?
Personally I would go for the Canon R7 also this gives me hope for the Canon RP Mark 2 which will hopefully have the same battery as the Canon R7 and unlimited recording time limit
Seeing the AF on these cameras makes the XT4 AF a joke.
Really hope XT5, XH2 and XPRO 4 gets their AF improved.
So was Dave the Canon guy there to stop Kai from painting it pink and then setting fire to it?
Gemma Colin's joke was 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 😂😂😂😂
How does this compare to Sony’s offerings? I’m thinking of trading in my A6500 for the R7. I know lens selection is currently a little limited but otherwise it seems like a great camera.
there's going to be RF-S Sigma lenses which should complement these cameras. dunno if you heard anything about it.
Wowee you got those quickly! Love you Kai and Lok! 💙
Probably sticking with my x-t4. Canon just doesn’t have an established enough mirrorless lens system to switch back.
It's expanding daily, plus you can use any ef lens with an adapter. Withing five years, my guess is they will have the largest collection of mirrorless lenses on the market.
I really appeciate how fast the camera, especially the R7 is.
Nonetheless i would still prefer a EOS RP (or even the EOS R!) over any of these. Mainly because of full frame. I was doing not much photography, but over the last 10-15 years always a bit, and always had APS-C entry level gear, first Canon EOS 350D new, then a 450D 2nd hand and later a very cheap (fked up) 550D.
I really liked the 550D and still like it for better telerange/higher pixel density, but daaamn, especially with the RF 50mm 1.8 STM... the EOS RP is just AWESOME.
I would say the Canon EOS RP + RF 50mm 1.8 is THE BEST and CHEAPEST entry in photography if you want to go directly fullframe (or alternative good 2nd hand DSLRs)
Only how small and lightweight this setup of FF mirrorless+50mm prime is is awesome.
eos rp = no 4k 60, no autofocus in 4k, 30 minute record limit, no 10bit 4:2:2 log, huge crop in 4k, less fps for photos, less megapixel, no digital hotshoe, older focusing system, no ibis. this is way better than the rp unless very low light, which the rp might still lose vs this new processor from the r3. honestly, if i had the rp i would sell it right away. even the eosr i would sell it and get the r7. you can always add a slight denoiser, but you cant get fps that didnt exist.
Funny thing is, the R7 is better than the RP in basically every way. Full frame or not, the R7 runs rings around it in terms of performance, IQ, etc.
@@kain0m The fair comparison would be now R7 vs R8, and the R8 is definately not bad, would the R8 be aviable as i bought the R7 i would have probably preffered the R8 aka the RP II/poor mans R6 II
My 8 EF-M lenses hopes that it will receive an upgraded body, something similar to the R10 would be absolutely fine.
Makes zero sense for Canon to have two parallel mount systems. EOS M is dead. Sorry.
I notice that when zooming the lens, the camera shows focal length in the viewfinder. This is the first time for R series, even R5 can't even do that.
Will Sigma adapt the DN crop series 16mm 30mm and 56mm f1.4 for the canon R mount?
I hope so.So does Canon. That would be great for Canon crop-R system.
Can I also choose a normal continuous shooting mode with the electronic shutter? I don't want the burst to be saved in one file because I want to use all images for computational photography.
Gawd damn Kai got that stone island drip‼️💧
These cameras look quite professional. I suspect the market won't allow them to invest in their powershot line, nor anything related to casual hobbyists like myself.
u have the g7x or g5x
@@bunmeng007 and the G1 X mark III, and their M line, all very capable cameras as the ones before them. I mean about future developments. I don't think the market will justify investing for hobbyists.
@@ReinoldFZ agree that most of the resource will go into the professional body camera and lenses in the shrinking market environment.
The problem is that everyone has a "powershot" like camera built into their phone.
I hope they give us a grip with the r7 at some point
Probably a third party will offer one. I think Canon was thinking light weight, carry around camera when they designed this. Although a grip is nice for verticals, it's not a deal breaker for me.
Canon, if you're reading this: I won't switch to an electronic viewfinder. The virtual world must be a bit away from my eyes.
What’re your thoughts on the “Auto Level”/“Auto Leveling” setting for both photo + video???
Nice but those are pretty large looking cameras for mirrorless APS-C!
How small do you want it? They are built for adults, with adult hands! A few reviewers have mentioned they were too small. They have to connect to Canon lenses.
rest in peace EF-M
Saw a really dumb video on the R7, this one is, as ever, really good.
great job shaving that morning!
Kai tell me about noise and shadow recovery on the R7. The lenses brought forward are variable aperture lenses and if we use the 600 and 800 RF then they are F8 (+1.6). Light is a real problem for the R7. Canon has made a clear statement with the R7; from its design to the lenses Canon won’t take it as serious as the full frames!
You don't lose light by using ff lenses on APS c camera, only when using a teleconverter.
The shutter shinanigans 😂😂
Pre shutter… if we can get that in Raw will be huge.
Cool, might be a good replacement and upgrade for our 80D. Little bit more expensive and starting a new lens collections always hurts a little, but the R7 really looks good for birds, video, family, etc
Good allrounder, just like the R10.
I've been using an RP with all my EF lenses and an adapter for 3 years now, and it has worked amazingly. The autofocus works way better on the RP than it ever did on any of my native EF lenses.
I just switched to an R7 from an 80d, and I absolutely love this camera. The images are nothing short of stunning - where the 80D always left ma slightly wanting, the R7 just nails them - color, noise, sharpnes... Using the same glass - RF-S lineup is disappoiting at the moment, the only RF lens I have is the 18-150, I'm still waiting for some cheaper, smaller primes (like the EF-S 24 STM).
A smart watch Kai? BLASPHEMY!!!
Why did canon remove the histogram once you press record? Cripple hammer strikes again?
You have to do the same destruction test on the R7 as on the 7D!!! 😁
Idk Mang, can't see myself buying canon in this, the year of our lord, 2022. So many better options for APSC sensor.
Like what? Fuji only gets up to 26mp sensor. While it’s a great sensor, the extra mp on the 32mp is great for cropping. Plus you get canon colours & access to the R & eos lenses
@@RodolphosTechchannelif you have to crop a lot invest in a zoom lens or a longer focal length, I have a Canon 135mm f2.8 for my needs. I always read marketing departments talking about cropping "this camera has 10 megapixels, it allows you to crop what is not possible with just 8 megapixels"... it is never enough overrated megapixels! By cropping you are just using a segment of the sensor, in that case you could get a Canon G5 X II, it has a good zoom lens and you will not wasting sensor area.
@@RodolphosTechchannel you get access to the RF lenses, but the good ones, especially longer lenses cost quite a bit. For many hobbyists/enthusiasts these are beyond their reach. Anyway, in a few weeks we'll be seeing what Fujifilm are going to release next, including a new stacked BSI 26 MP sensor, and a 40 MP sensor (specs TBC).
@@RodolphosTechchannel u'll see a new 26mp and 40mp stacked sensor from fuji this May 31st. Then compare with the R7 and R10 and you'll see.
@@bunmeng007 yah, there have been rumblings of Fuji about to crush the industry shortly from a lot of people - going to keep expectations in check
wow canon already catching up with the mirrorless game
I enjoyed the bowling, great review!
I wish i hadnt bought the m6 mk2 now and got the r7 clog is the reason
ill be buying the r7. looks awesome
@Kai W Greatest mind, can you tell us how to get the Shutter Count for a Canon G7X Mark II. it is believed that there is no shutter therefore there is no there and therefore no count, or is that the other way around?
No answers to the most important questions? Like are they going to offer the bodies in red and white as well as black?
;)
1:00 lmao yall were getting tasered
Notification squad!
Can someone explain why someone would buy the R10 when the RP is similar money?
The R10 has more reach due to the crop, it captures far more frames per second than the RP (that is, with continous autofocus), the autofocus features are more advanced, it has a joystick to move autofocus fields. No artificial recording limit of 30 minutes. And it seems, that the R10 does have dual pixel AF in 4k video, which the RP does not (and got axed for). It also has an inbuilt flash.
Lot of similarities with the R10 and my daily which is the good ole ILCA-68.
Pre-burst features too? Awesome.
Rolling shutter will be Sergio for fast action unfortunately.
Idk for the price and specs the older canon rp and eos r just seem like a better deal for only slightly different specs/size and being full frame
For aps-c I think fuji and sony have perfectly filled that niche providing unique experiences apart from full-frame equivalents
eos rp = no 4k 60, no autofocus in 4k, 30 minute record limit, no 10bit 4:2:2 log, huge crop in 4k, less fps for photos, less megapixel, no digital hotshoe, older focusing system. theres no logical reason to go for rp, unless very low light, which it might still lose vs this new processor.
eos r= no 4k 60, huge crop in 4k, 30 minute record limit, less fps for photos, older focusing system, no 10bit 4:2:2. again unless very low light, then theres no reason for it.
eos r7 and even r10, makes both the rp and r a harder sell. especially the rp.
Hmm retro Beatles hair! Canon or Nikon Kai?
tilt, tilt, tilt, tilt ♥
Is there a fast wide lens that could do interior work for these cameras
Do you prefer the Canon R7 over the Canon R?
Isn't the r10 still a grand? Seems about twice the price i'd want to pay. I'd rather the xt4 over the r7.
for a worse autofocus system?
@@truthseeker6804 He wants less with more.. Maybe he should go for a phone, what you think truth seeker? :D
Question does the tilt screen gets cut of when using a external monitor?

man i want a successor to the r and rp
Informative and enjoyable review!
I like the d-pad is back
I have the canon EOS RP and was thinking of getting the R7. Would it be a upgrade or should I pass on the R7?
better AF, worse sensor. Probably only a worth while upgrade for shooting video or sports

I am so upset. The 4k60p is non interlaced... Disaster for me. Waiting to see the fuji
I can't see what lenses will allow you blog without spending 2k.
Open goal missed. Buying an Eos 600 was the last time Canon delivered for me!
4k 60 interlaced is so huge youd rather go for bad autofocus. you can adapt efs wide angle lens and you can vlog.
You are the only one who said it has dual pixel CMOS 2
Goodbye EOS-M, it's nice to know you.
@kai W, does R7 have aperture/shutter priority for video?
It's annoying that you basically just have Fuji and surprisingly Canon putting out mid to high level APS-C mirrorless cameras. If they actually release at least the basic set of lenses on RF for APS-C with Canon's crop factor (1.6x) taken into consideration, then I might consider an R7 as someone who actually likes APS-C sensors (not the aspect ratio, to me 4:3 with MFT is the best). Between RF being locked up tight and it being the all-around mount, I doubt there will be a lot of APS-C specific fast, compact, and affordable primes released. Odds are there will be a budget 34mm released with full frame coverage, size, weight, and a slightly reduced price made in plastic to "give a path to upgrade to full frame." I love my D500 DSLR, even if Nikon had to reuse the fairly ancient sensor relatively speaking for a Z body APS-C camera, at least they could adapt IBIS into something that looks like a Nikon SP. Z mount will also be shafted on APS-C purpose-built lenses, but at least third party can kind of fill the gap.
All of that is worth talking about because Fuji couldn't stock of a camera to save their lives. I question if it's due to recent-ish obvious problems, because their stuff was perma out of stock/backordered BEFORE the entire pandemic and supply chain issue. They also happily have an X100V set for like 2400 USD on the official Fuji store taking full advantage of people with more money than sense and the Fuji cult that would basically buy a GFX 50R used in terms of money for a fixed lens camera.
"Auto level" is so underwhelming in 2022. I hope Canon can include IBIS as a standard feature in all their cameras before the sun burns out.
Shall I wait for this or get the FUJI XT4, Which sensor is better?
Obviously xt4 is a better camera
Looking at the Eos M6ii and the X-T4 i'd guess the X-T4 by an hair.
But that would not be the reason to pick one over the other.
The reasons to go with the X-T4 is lens selection and viewfinder.
And those 2 points are in my opinion worth a lot more then the AF advantage of these Canon's
@@1barnet1 How about xe-4, seems like it has a lot of the same things as xt4 in a compact body and I love the range finder look.
@@ParthRastogi For me it's a no. Not because the performance but due to the lack of D-pad. I use the 4 directions for various settings.
I change a lot of things constantly on the fly and while shooting through the EVF. With the X-T4 i can with my older smaller X-T20 i can. But since the X-T30 and the X-E3 that is no longer possible. Since you need to use gestures on the rear lcd to quick access those settings. Or use the q menu.
But this is a personal thing. I just wished Fujifilm kept using the X-E2 body instead of going smaller. Your mileage may vary
