My grandfather added a verse to this song. "Casey regained consciousness and saw what had been done_ Every hat on the hat rack had been taken off but one_ A lady's sky blue bonnet with a lace so fine and thin_ And as he stuffed it on and laced it up around his chin, He said . . .
That's good, makes me smile....this song(it's my favorite ring tone) makes me think of my cross Canada road trip in 2014 where I went for Beans & Toutons at the Norris Point, Nfld Town Hall while I stayed at the local KOA. I knew noone and within minutes I never had a moment without a friend to talk with. I want to go back and spend many more weeks riding all the maritimes.
Great job on this variant of James Mooney's 1941 comic stage song. Too bad the audience participation in the last chorus fell a little shy. Thanks for sharing. :-)
I HAD A HAT WHEN I CAME IN 1. Casey wore his brand new hat to Murphy's wake last night_ Someone stole his hat and, bo, it started up a fight_ Casey smashed the furniture, the radio as well_ He nearly woke the corpse up as he began to yell_ (CHORUS) I had a hat when I came in, I hung it on the rack_ And I'll have a hat when I go out or I'll break somebody's back_ I'm a peaceful loving man I am, and I don't want to shout_ BUT I had a hat when I came in, and I'll have a hat when I go out_ 2. Casey kept on fighting - sure they couldn't keep him quiet_ Someone phoned up for the cops to come and stop the riot_ Two cops then rushed into the room, but Casey laid them out_ As he threw them through the window, they both heard Casey shout_ Oh . . . (Chorus) 3. Casey kept on fighting until one eyed Paddy Flynn_ Socked him on the whiskers with a great big rolling pin_ He knocked poor Casey senseless, it was an awful clout_ As he lay there unconscious Casey kept on shouting out_ (Chorus) AND GRANDPA FALLON'S EXTRA VERSE: 4. Casey regained consciousness and saw what had been done_ Every hat on the hat rack had been taken off but one_ A woman’s sky blue bonnet with a lace so fine and thin_ And as he stuffed it on and laced it up around his chin, he said (Chorus)
I had a hat when I came in And I hung it on the rack And I'll have a hat when I go out Or I'll break somebody's back Casey wore his brand new hat To Murphy's wake last night Someone stole his hat and Boys, it started up a fight; Casey smashed the furniture, The radio as well, He nearly woke the corpse up When he began to yell: I had a hat when I came in And I hung it on the rack, And I'll have a hat when I go out Or I'll break somebody's back I'm a peaceful loving man, I am And I don't want to shout But I had a hat when I came in And I'll have a hat when I go out! Casey kept on shouting, boys They couldn't keep him quiet Someone phoned up for the cops To come and stop the riot Two cops rushed into the room But Casey laid them out He fired them through the window They both heard Casey shout I had a hat when I came in And I hung it on the rack And I'll have a hat when I go out Or I'll break somebody's back I'm a peaceful loving man, I am And I don't want to shout But I had a hat when I came in And I'll have a hat when I go out! Casey kept on shouting, boys Till one-eyed Paddy Flynn Socked him on the whisker With a great big rolling pin He knocked poor Casey senseless It was an awful clout As he lay there unconscious Casey kept on shouting out I had a hat when I came in And I hung it on the rack And I'll have a hat when I go out Or I'll break somebody's back I'm a peaceful loving man, I am And I don't want to shout But I had a hat when I came in And I'll have a hat when I go out! I'm a peaceful loving man, I am I'm a peaceful loving man, I am I'm a peaceful loving man, I am I'm a peaceful loving man, I am (I had a hat when I came in And I hung it on the rack And I'll have a hat when I go out Or I'll break somebody's back)
My grandfather sang this song too. He landed in Pittsburg. Only Grandfather Fallon wasn't much of a singer. It came out much crustier and gruffer. And a wee bit slower. God bless 'im.
We used to sing this song Dad as young kids. Happy memories
Approx 20 years ago my NFLD friends gave me this song and told me this is their music.
My Great Grandfather Michael Malloys favorite song to sing. Thanks
My mother taught me this song when I was maybe 3 years old. With the actions, too! 😂
Dis is da best kind b’ys my fadder used to sing this to me to get to sleep
I love shanneyganock so much...when I was a baby this used to calm me down when I was crying...I'm 14 now and I still love them no matter what

I'm adding your grandfather's verse to my songsheet. It's golden!
OMG! That's PERFECT!!
Yeah this is officially part of the song by my books now. As a guy named Casey.
Good one..that was absolutely positively amazing
If this was in Boston the crowd would be louder than the band.
Reminds me of my father-in-law! He used to sing this all the time but more of a stated poem, not a song, and much slower. Miss him.
What happened to him
This is the song you know half the words to and sing in a bar as you get progressively more drunk
awesome song reminds me of my fadder singing it !
🍀❤☘
Irish people = this song

My Irish-born grandfather used to sing this to us, then try to get me into a (fake) boxing match with him.

Although I seem to remember that in Grandpa Fallon's version, it was Murphy who wore his brand new hat to Casey's wake last night . . .
@@jashilsdonmusicmust be a slight mix up

My cusin is mark
I wish I had a hat...
Here, wear this Necro hat!
I had a hat when I came in
And I hung it on the rack
And I'll have a hat when I go out
Or I'll break somebody's back
Casey wore his brand new hat
To Murphy's wake last night
Someone stole his hat and
Boys, it started up a fight;
Casey smashed the furniture,
The radio as well,
He nearly woke the corpse up
When he began to yell:
I had a hat when I came in
And I hung it on the rack,
And I'll have a hat when I go out
Or I'll break somebody's back
I'm a peaceful loving man, I am
And I don't want to shout
But I had a hat when I came in
And I'll have a hat when I go out!
Casey kept on shouting, boys
They couldn't keep him quiet
Someone phoned up for the cops
To come and stop the riot
Two cops rushed into the room
But Casey laid them out
He fired them through the window
They both heard Casey shout
I had a hat when I came in
And I hung it on the rack
And I'll have a hat when I go out
Or I'll break somebody's back
I'm a peaceful loving man, I am
And I don't want to shout
But I had a hat when I came in
And I'll have a hat when I go out!
Casey kept on shouting, boys
Till one-eyed Paddy Flynn
Socked him on the whisker
With a great big rolling pin
He knocked poor Casey senseless
It was an awful clout
As he lay there unconscious
Casey kept on shouting out
I had a hat when I came in
And I hung it on the rack
And I'll have a hat when I go out
Or I'll break somebody's back
I'm a peaceful loving man, I am
And I don't want to shout
But I had a hat when I came in
And I'll have a hat when I go out!
I'm a peaceful loving man, I am
I'm a peaceful loving man, I am
I'm a peaceful loving man, I am
I'm a peaceful loving man, I am
(I had a hat when I came in
And I hung it on the rack
And I'll have a hat when I go out
Or I'll break somebody's back)
