When I saw her perform this live, she told the story of being in a hotel in Beirut, besieged by bombings and bomb threats. Guests were asked to go to their rooms for safety. She went, and being very afraid and alone, she sat at her typewriter and began to write to her daughter. When she began to sing this song, an audible gasp went over the audience as everyone realized the words she wrote. The extra verses not included in other commercial versions of the song, tell the whole story. Eartha lived through many difficult times, this one probably the scariest of her life, but she survived, rose above it, and continued to live an honest life despite all the obstacles. She was a very grateful and gracious lady, in every context.
I remember Ertha and Jane Russell both drunk one night in Sedona, Az late 1970s at Russell's bar, Dudes. They hung on each other, slid off their chairs, laughed through the songs and just cut up enjoying themselves. Everyone there had a blast. The two were smashed (Jane usually was) but they put on an imprompt concert that had them and the rest of us in the bar in tears laughing. They were one of the gang. wish it could have been videoed
She was one of the best women out there in her time and even now, in music and movies. Her life was well lived, and she will be grreatly missed. R.I.P Ms Kitt aka Yzma.
Bravo beautiful lady. Rest in sweet peace. I was able to see her perform this live at a little club in Tampa (or was it DC?) . She was so real and had so much depth and pain and could break any heart of stone with this song.
Callumha... We have a VHS of the segment that we taped when Ms. Kitt was on the show. We then just cut the video with a video editor and uploaded it here. RR

How am I just finding this performance😭? Eartha Kitt was in a class all by herself...RIP you were a goddess here on Earth
I am duly humbled. She was proof that you need no royal blood to be regal. You will be missed - you high priestess of class. RIP.

Is there a full video I can see somewhere?
Very moving. Her tears truly show she believes every word.

I love Eartha but she’s a great performer but this song she’s sounds awful like a cat 🐈 getting ready to go into heat
Sorry but this was one of the worst recordings of this song i have ever heard. I did not like it at all, poor singing poor rendition
It's a wonderful rendering, Wilfred. But to each his own.
She wrote the lyrics, so how can it possibly be "bad"?
@@Sotto_ she added lyrics to the original songs sweetie
Wow! You must be the most Cantankerous person ever on UA-cam!
