- Marco is currently a full-time research scholar at Harvard University. The aim of the research is to help us to better understand learning and memory. Marco talks about the building and implementation of habits and their benefit to "get a bit better every day". Marco is an upcoming cognitive neuroscientist from the University of Amsterdam (UvA), health consultant and enthusiastic Crossfitter. The impulse to better understand the human psyche and brain came first through his parents, who are both psychologists, and was later sparked by inspiring authors and researchers, such as Sam Harris.
Currently, Marco is a full-time research scholar at Harvard University, working on the Connectome Project in the research team of Prof. Lichtman. The aim of the research is to better understand the patterns of neural connections in the brain of living animals, which ultimately helps us to better understand learning and memory.
Marco’s morning routine, which consists of Zen meditation, stretching, breath work and a cold shower, gives him the energy to tackle every day afresh. Moreover, he is all around passionate about living a holistically healthy and balanced life by working out daily, following a mainly plant-based diet and taking care of his sleep. This talk made me relise how much time I spend on my phone and that this is a habit, bad habit...

Atomic Habits is amazing
The best rule for sticking to habits is 2 Day Rule.
Here how it works:
You are not allowed to skip anything for 2 consecutive days.
But you allow yourself to skip one day whenever something comes up or you just don't feel like it.
It is liberating and also effective way to stick to the habits.
Because you will have more days of doing the habit than not.
I learned it from Matt D'Avella.

I will keep a habits journal! I think it will reveal a lot more time “relaxing” in ways that I may not need or may not really be so relaxing... like on the phone
Very interesting that the brain doesn’t have any way to favor positive or negative behaviors and awareness is the key to taking small steps of change

Change environment, be aware on your current behavior, apply 5 second rule to to something.
I have been looking at my phone a lot and feel empty when I'm not looking at it. Now I feel that I'm addicted to it. So this is to video i chose to get rif of this habbit by creating a new one.

I agree with most of this video & overall think it is great. However, some of my Bad Habits are not related to a Cue & then ultimately a reward for which Dopamine is excreted. For me because I have Attention Deficit I’ll just seem to forget about doing things consistently because I’m really not paying attention to what I’m actually doing. So my bad habit of not cleaning up after myself is because many times I am hyper focused on something else & not pay attention to tidying up as I go along.
That’s the problem with in of itself… the reason you don’t clean up behind yourself from my view would be because whatever you’re hyper focused on now is more domaine rewarding than making up your bed in the moment.. Sometimes you have to learn to regulate your dopamine consumption so more boring task arnt as boring… the reason you jump from task to task is the search for more dopamine
I don't know who need this ,but you can build great habits in your life ,and not just any habits that aligns you with your purpose.

To begin with we can have a list of our current habits.
Then we examine and replace the unhealthy, non-effective habits and replace them with new ones.
Focus , sleep and awareness by Yoga medication daily . I practice in Lifetime . It has helped me a lot

I'm addicted to a game, I play it every time I'm stressed, and that kind of soothes me, can I use this game as a reward for short periods of time (like I'll study and as reward I'll play that game for 10 minutes), and thus create a new habit of studying while letting go of the bad habit of playing the game for long periods of time, is that possible?
Yes!! Like a reward for your work. Time studying > 10 minutes playing game

That’s a bad idea. It sounds more like you’re really addicted to it, reward yourself with something else
I think it is a good idea. Provided the game is also one that stimulates your brain.
It's good only if you won't play the game if you don't study.

That was a great talk and great insight. Although I might not agree that a simple app can have such a great impact. Probably even himself overestimates the effect of that app and the main things have been done within himself and through hard work, not external tools.
That app kicks off the entire change process.

Ugh im so inconsistent. I could have a habit developed then just quit.
Maybe its my depression. I never get the i miss this trigger that would normally keep a person going if they happened to miss a day. I miss a day and it takes weeks for me to get back to it.

I want to fix my sleeping schedule, I want to be able to focus on studying mathematics (by doing it) during the hours of 12-7, and this would free me up for pursuing art and reading for the rest of the time. Maybe play a video game or hit the gym on alternating days.

I have exactly the same problem
I have listened to a lot of talks about habit.
This has to be the best so far.
No " motivating" catchphrases etc, just good old fashioned simple science and basic instructions.
Check out James Clears book - Atomic Habits. He goes way more in depth and give clearer more beneficial tactics on how to make it easier to form good habits.

Have you tried reading the compound effect by Darren hardy? It is a very good read and it talks a lot about habits without bogging you down with very common sense tips.
Swear he said, 7 years ago this was me. So I changed, 3 years later finished his degree. 2 years after that here’s him now ( photo taken last week )
Knowing what to do and how to do it with will power is not enough.

I also used to have the habit of playing video games straight after high school and didn't think it was a problem since my grades were great.
Turns out it became a problem in the future and now I'm working to making myself 1% better each day.

The thing is I've started meditation daily for 20 minutes
Almost moved on from a toxic relation
Doing digital dieting (less screen & less social media)
Going in nature every Sunday
Work out 3 days a week
Less fear of being judged
Taking less stress
Life is good now compared to 7 months ago....

How are things now?
So, as to economize energy, (our) brain tends to function repetitively, in smaller, thicker zones of its subconscient, each zone corresponding to a habit (regardless if good or bad!), habits which were created with the help of a reward, associated with dopamine generation. Thanks for such a nice and logically articulated exposition !
