I was wondering why MIZZOU's music sounded so familiar and then I realized it was the same music they would blare from our stadium the last football practice before away games to get our football team used to hearing music that wasn't pep music for our school. 🤣

All brass just sounds so clear. Mizzou is a great band though. Great job by both.
OSU dance team is so crisp.. definitely see why they are national champs.

The problem I’ve always had with all brass is while clear, the problem come when half the band is trumpet/high brass which leads it to being very top heavy. Mizzou, while maybe not being as “crisp” I feel has a better richness and power to it but that might also come from them being around 300 members compared to the 228

@@sammyrhoads265 great analysis! The size does matter, but one thing I like with OSU is that they have balanced the band out by limiting the number of trumpets and cornets they have and the 228 has a set number of each type of brass instruments. At their concerts, OSU shows this by breaking down Buckeye Battle Cry (or access the field) by instrument, and the sound /part it emanates.
NOT trying to take anything away from Mizzou band! They were fantastic! Congrats on the win! You deserved it.

@@hgcunningham oh I’m not a part of either band, just a neutral observer who just happened to live in Columbus Ohio most my life so I’ve been fed a bunch of info on the OSU band. The main thing I’ve heard and seen that off-balances them is just the nature of the instruments. With a good amount of arrangements they change the clarinet, flute and piccolo parts to their instrumentation which leads to it sometimes being very high brass heavy even though there’s 24ish sousas because of how an Eb Horn, trumpet, or Cornet projects in comparison to a clarinet or picc which can play real high but still just be a sprinkle instead of a mountain of salt. It also doesn’t help that there’s a massive amount of snare drums in comparison to the rest of the drum line which leads to you not being able to hear the basses or tenors as much. It also ends up being a matter of opinion of what you prefer, I personally have always preferred a more tenor centric sound like what I have with my college band up at Western Michigan as opposed to more high brass heavy bands like Washington or OSU so I personally will always gravitate to a tenor sound but to each their own

I wish OSU's drum major had gotten to twirl out on the turf like Mizzou's twirlers.
I really enjoyed the variety in Mizzou's selections, but TBDBITL is the BEST DAMN BAND for a reason! ⭕🙌

I mean, the game has refs and a scoreboard, so it's not terribly unclear, I think. :) Ohio State sounded great though, and we enjoyed the halftime show.

Biggest thing I look for in a great band is a nice blend along with powerful sound, which I believe the marching Mizzou had in spades here. They had a great blend and balance with their sound and you could hear the woodwinds at times as well which only the best blended bands can accomplish
OSUs band while decent, feels tinny and top heavy which comes with the pitfall of half your band being high brass and in turn drastically altering the balance of sound.
It also doesn’t help that the marching Mizzou goes up to around 300 in just their wind section compared to OSU who refuses to go above 228 and in home games at max marches 197. There’s just such a difference in sound it’s almost unfair to compare the two, it’s apples to oranges.
TL;DR I believe the Marching Mizzou won this battle of the bands (they also got cooler uniforms imo)

If you read further, OSUMB has been an all brass and percussion marching band for 90 years. The 228 members are selected from just short of 500 auditioners every single year. Tradition is the driving force for everyone who joins, it was the band I wanted to be in when I first touched a trombone in 5th grade. My dad joked that I should dot the i. It was only ever a dream until this year. I was cut the past 2 seasons. Every member reauditions each year during a 2-4 day audition process that requires the memorization of all school songs, fundamentals and pregame traditions. Nearly every member has been cut from the band at some point. Mizzou only auditions once and there audition process is only a fundamental music audition.
The uniform design is over 100 years old and is based off and originally used the Ohio State Navy ROTC uniform.

@@AndricKeltontrust me, I know the traditions of the OSU band, I was born and raised in Columbus all my life. While I respect the traditions I just believe that Mizzou has a sound that I like more. I’ve always been more for tenor voices which I don’t really get with the OSU band being so top heavy with the high brass making up almost half the band. It’s not the sound I personally like. I’ve always preferred the nice dark rich sound of bands like Mizzou, Florida state, Western Michigan (the band I’m in), as opposed to ones that are dominated by trumpets like Ohio state, Penn State, and Wisconsin. I also believe that, traditionally or not, you fundamentally lose something with having no woodwinds and you can definitely hear it when you hear OSUs band play an opposing teams fight song. Best example I would have for that is the postgame between Ohio State and Oklahoma where OSU plays Oklahomas fight song then followed by Oklahoma playing it. As for universities being very selective with their bands Ohio state isn’t alone with that, there’s also Michigan, Auburn, Penn State, and multiple others that are VERY selective with who they bring in (each band turns away around 300 members a year) but they still have much larger bands with larger sounds. As for the uniforms, while I think the old school military design is neat, I just like the modernity of Mizzou’s uniform and how even though it’s a modern uniform they’re still very well layered and share their own traditions.
End of the day, OSUs band doesn’t have the band I personally like to hear whereas the Marching Mizzou has a sound and power I like to hear from the tenor and bass section which brings in more power and blend for the rest of the band which I like a lot.

@@sammyrhoads265 Sorry, it sounded like your first comment didn't know that so I was just explaining it. Im also saying we built ours on the british brass band instrumentation in 1934 and will never change it.
I talked to Michigan and Penn State members this year. Both groups I was talking to don't think they would have ever finished our tryout process. They both only have a 1 day audition process and they don't cap instrumentation numbers. Both bands have also only used video auditions since covid, something we never did again after 2020. I would say only around 5% of OSUMB members have made the band their first try. So maybe 15 veteran members. The rest get cut and try again.

You complain about too much on the high end, but overlook the flutes, piccolos, clarinets making up the highs 😂 but go off

    • @sammyrhoads265

Compare the sound profile between a trumpet playing an obligato part full of trills to a picc or clarinet. A picc or clarinet can hide in the rest of the sound and add just that sprinkle on top compared to a trumpet being forced to play that part instead and just overpowering the rest. One is balanced and blended with the rest of the ensemble whereas the other is playing a part that it’s not meant to and making the ensemble as a whole feel off. One go to example I always go to is the Oklahoma vs Ohio State Post game where both bands played Oklahomas fight song. You can tell the stark difference between Ohio states band, sounding top heavy and tinny while playing it, compared to Oklahomas who just sounds complete and has a richer tone seeing as the high woodwinds are able to play those real high notes while also being able to hide within the rest of the sound which a trumpet or other high brass would struggle to do as can be heard

What's up with the rude comments? Bet it makes you feel so manly. Ohio State would never act that way toward a visiting band.
