In 1981 and 1982, I owned a gold 1978 R100RS, did 50,000km+ on it in those two years! Sold it and bought an R100 RT cos always got sore hands from leaning forward on long rides. I loved the styling, so German! In that time, only problem was on a very long trip, the transmission became noisy in all gears except 4th. Drove like this in 4th for 500 km to my home, removed the transmission and one of the club members was a transmission specialist, located a crook shaft in it. BMW Australia did not have this part in stock. Mechanic had it in his hands 7 days later, flown out from Germany, by BMW. Transmission back in the bike and continued riding it. Wasn't a perfect bike but I liked it very much. To get at tools with panniers in place, had to remove panniers first to lift the seat up. Foot warmers were uncomfortably hot in Summer so removed lower fairings then replaced them in winter. A few weeks ago bought an R100RT and thinking about buying another RS.

You did some good riding on the RS! That Havana Gold is such a great look for that bike. I came from K-bikes (K1100LT and K1200LT). The R100RS was my 2nd airhead I owned, it is all around a great bike for long distance touring. We added the K75 handlebars to alleviate the issues you described. You should get another RS!

@@andymueller82 bought a set of Laverda adjustable handle bars for the RS to rectify the sore hands wrist problem, but sold it before I fitted them and bought an 1981 R100RT which cured the problem. Sold the RT in 1991, The usual story, met a woman, we bought a house, and the first thing that goes, is the bike! Then except for two short periods with a R65LS and an K75S, pretty much was not into riding bikes for over thirty years. Just corrected this wrong thinking and bought an identical RT to the one I owned in the 1980s - green 1981 model! I am thinking of buying another RS as well. Been offered a 100/7 with an S fairing by a buddy. Been sitting idle in his mechanics workshop for over thirty years! Price is tempting.

He was my Transportation Chairman at ArtCenter Europe from 1991 to 1992. This led me to a 21 year design career at Mercedes-Benz. He pretty much still looks the same. I’m glad he is still going strong!

A guy approached me as I was parked, and admired the bike. We chatted and I told him what I knew about the bikes and we exchanged phone numbers. He contacted me shortly after, he had bought an RT, and hoped I would visit ...
      Like a shot !
It was a lovely bike, we did a bit of fettling and he got to know it. I visited fairly often as issues came up, nothing serious, and I was fed and watered royally. He really loved the bike, and had some very pleasant months of riding until he fell ill and soon passed.

Yes I often wonder why the RT is not as revered as the RS when it's mechanically identical. My October 1979 built RT seems primitive to ride after being in storage the last 5 years but maybe that's the intrigue of these machines.. Back in 79 it was the most expensive bike on the market here in the UK but frankly had non of the sophistication of my CX500 at just over a third of the RT's list price.
