As a user of hitfilm until my birthday (when I get Adobe Creative Cloud) I can officially say he uses light sword ultra which isn’t free
The regular light sword effect is though
you should use the same technique as him but in after effects, the saber plug in is really limited for some shots.

Personally I use neon glow and I had a blur for making it look like its unstable but this is also a good idea I will try to see whats best

Wow this is incredible. Best tutorial I've ever seen. I have downloaded hitfilm express but I wasn't sure how to open my files in it. My files are MOV but it won't work as it only accepts a certain type of file. Do you know how I would open my file?

You can move frames by hitting (.) and (,) it just makes it a bit easier

hi i downlaoded the installer, but it was an msi file, did this happen to you and if so, how did you get hitfilm?
My setup is different then yours and does not have the pen tool or the white plane thing is there something I should do to get the same display as you

Yeah, for the activation, I just keyframe the intensity of a lens flare at the begining, make it bright for a frame then I dim it over the next two frames.

Apparently Hitfilm is entirely free!
How to make it transparent? When I add in a plane there is no button to make it transparent
There is a button that looks like an eye right next to the number, just click that to toggle it on and off
Hitfilm expres cost money is there another one you recommend

You mean the Hitfilm app? if so yes, there's a setting in the lightsword effect called "stability", you just raise that to about a 50. If you are talking about a different app, I'm not 100% sure so it would be tough for me to say anything of use. Hope this helps.

So I have HitFilm downloaded but the GUI looks completely different from what was in the video. Did I download the wrong thing? nothing seems to be where it is in the video and it is becoming frustrating.

Yeah man since this tutorial was posted, hitfilm took the effect from free to paid, instead use neon glow.

There's an app called movie saber effects Which allows the user to easily add a lightsaber effect to stop motion animations with lightsabers, Unfortunately, it's not compatible with some mobile devices.
For me, when I go to hitfilm express it says three options and they all cost money.
Do this still function in 2022

Go to "window" option on the top, then change the layout to Composite.

Ah it’s all good I made it work with the Neon Glow
I did not realize this and just checked, it was free untill a recent update, will redo the tutorial to accommodate this. Thankyou
