In the second episode of a two-part special, Tariq Nafi reports from the occupied West Bank, on how Israel’s surveillance machine infiltrates the lives of Palestinians. He also speaks with a former Israeli lieutenant in Unit 8200 - the elite intelligence unit responsible for spying on Palestinians.

I would agree if it was in USA or a peaceful country you dont want this. You are talking about the most hostile location of a hostile region having a lot of cameras and police. It has probably prevented a lot of fights and deaths between the two sides who are basically at war. The Israeli footage literally helped the Palestinian man be proved as innocent, it sounded. Camera footage works both ways, it keeps the Israelis honest too because footage can leak or be released. For such a hostile place, footage promotes better behaviour from both sides. So saying that cameras in this one extremely hostile place on earth is like 1984 is a stretch. A bank vault also has a lot of cameras and policeing so do airports. Those places make less sense to have surveillance than Jerusalem.

similarly; the context and application of the camera's footage determine the power they yield - noone bats an eye when a soldier shoots a defeneless palestinian, but it sure matters to the palestinians who are powerless already.
it's not a mutual detterent when the context is one sided control.

The Israelis are deluded if they expect to live in peace in Israel. They have caused such misery for their hosts. I’ve learned so much and I cannot see how any good will ever come from this messianic occupation.

I'm a practicing Catholic too, a Knight's wife, and I'm familiar with these (relatively sparse) attacks by Israeli citizens (one was even a Jewish American tourist) against Christians but in almost every case of violence or vandalism the culprit was arrested, charged and convicted by Israeli police for crimes including, in the case of vandalism, Disrespecting Religion. So, it is not the Israeli state against Christians, it's random nutcases, and far fewer of them there than most everywhere else. Let's be fair in our solidarity.

When dealing with potential suicide bombers tazers are not recommended as they can set off explosives. I agree that the video looks bad but from the point of view of the soldiers, the idea is to neutralize the threat as soon as you can so that you can move on to the next stage of response which is to locate and provide medical care to the injured.
It amazes me how long Israel has gotten away with this brutal occupation.... (never mind the whole history of its birth) and it just keeps getting more and more brutal as time passes. A couple decades ago I learned that the IDF trains some North American police departments, this started around the same time as our police becoming militarized. This system Israel has in place to monitor Palestinians looks a lot like a blue print for a S.M.A.R.T. city (the dark side). Check points, zero privacy, compiling profiles, withholding the necessities of life, absolute control... we should be in full support of the Palestinian people... if not for the moral duty then for the fact that this is what many governments want to install, so we have to stand together.

It’s a terrible way to live I can’t even walk my dog without the entire neighborhood getting notifications from the ring door bells. Sometimes I wish I could be living again in the pay phone days. New York City has such powerful cameras that the can identify passengers in the back seat of a car that’s traveling at 80 mph. I’m ready to sell everything and go live in the mountains of South America with the monkeys in the tree. This cannot be an easy society to grow up in. They say the cameras are for our safety that’s bullshit because in the 70s and 80s everybody was perfectly safe.

It has happened in the UK as well. Cameras are everywhere to monitor traffic and people. At work, we are monitored remotely and by camera. Police stop and search people looking for drugs or knives.
But one can't set camera to another country. I have no rights to set camera to others bathroom.
