You could actually see him enter the 'zone' just before he started singing. It's not all singers or musicians that find that untouchable, flawless place when they perform, but the special ones do. Even the anonymous ones who aren't 'known' and 'celebrity'
Those critics out there need only consider this; this show strives to see the most unlikely individuals who have got some talent and are bold enough to show it in front of an audience and cameras, exposed. Then every effort is made to see them reach their potential. Why? Because this is what brings the most viewers and affords the highest ratings. More than 11 million have watched this video. You better believe the guy is pretty good and when one is there in the audience listening, they don't have to be a seasoned listener to know it, Next time you see this guy; they'll have him looking the part!

Sooo wrong about not hearing this frequently. This is still one of my favorite auditions and performances. I am so happy he won. I am not even an opera fan, though I do like many opera artists (also not like many of them), but Mr. Potts is very talented. Congratulations Mr. Potts.

The shock doesn't come from his singing, (or talent, should he ever so arguably had any), but entIrely from the title and the responses/comments below. Seeing with my own eyes that comments left even as recent as a couple weeks ago, showing people genuinely still has no clue of who he is, and still more interesting, were people completely uninformed to a degree that they were asking about the title of the song! I mean, in no sarcastic manner, how on earth would people be so secluded from the world, while residing in developed democratic countries in the Western world, with the ability of going online and accessing information so freely, without any political hindrance, and even bearing the skill to upload videos and watching video clips right here on UA-cam, still have absolutely no idea of who the singer was, and what song he sang, and responding in awe, saying how deeply moved/touched they were by this 'unknown guy'! This clip is over a decade old, say, 13 years, to say the least. (I mean from the original time that the program was aired on TV.) This "unknown man", has in the real world, long risen to fame, been signed up to a recording contract with the world's largest record producing music/entertaining giant conglomorate, UMG. Or in long form, Universal Music Group. To date, (as of this very moment I am writing this comment, August 11th, a Monday morning, at 4:36 am Hong Kong time), this "unknown man" has at least recorded and released a handful of, or even more than 10 LP recordings, and has gone from rags to riches, now believed to have generated sales income totaling tens of millions of Euros. And yet, here in this virtual world of cyber information, people still haven't learned that the clip was taken from the TV show, "Britain's Git Alent", and the name of the singer is Paul Potts, and still have not learned that the song is indeed an Italian Opera Aria, taken from the famous Italian Opera "Turandot", written by master composer Giancomo Puccini, and the title is "Nessun Dorma", which translates into English as "Nobody Sleeps". Absolutely stunned to find these people who otherwise would be thought of from the Stone Age, had not been the very fact that they actually accessed the video here on UA-cam websie! How can they be so locked up and caged and be barred from the real world, so that they can honestly and genuinely claimed to have not heard of who the singer was and what song that was.

That someone who would make the effort to write such a long winded and arrogant rant deriding others for not learning from all the "cyber information" available - would write something with obvious errors easily checked using such "cyber information". I love Opera! The world needs more singers! I am move by all who brilliantly perform pieces flawlessly. I've noticed that Simon smiles more so on opera singers, because not only are they rare talent but money! I would gladly drop on seats to hear such passion. It's absolutely priceless.
This unknown singer was Paul Potts who won Britain's Got Talent (BGT) in 2007. Paul also had a movie, "One Chance", made about his BGT entry. Another You Tube singing sensation, Connie Talbot (who was only 6 years old in 2007) was Runner Up to Paul. Connie is now 14 and this year (2015) she has been nominated for a Shortly Award as one of the top 7 Singers on You Tube. Well done BGT for bringing us these two wonderful singers!

Such a wonderful, gifted voice. Some people have it and some don't. Experience has shown to me that very few people have the gift and thank goodness they are ordinary folks who do not have an ego or fame. Fame seems to destroy talent because it is commercialized and degraded by narcissism. Singing comes from the heart and soul. No fancy costumes or scandalous behavior makes up for a beautiful song that touches the soul. Hope this singer continued sharing his talent and stays humble.
I expected a little more power. It would've been nice especially since he was using microphones. However, the sound system in a closed auditorium is not as good as in an open amphitheater. But this is just as good as Andrea Bocelli. Didn't watch the video---- I just listened to it. Because I just wanted to hear the song w/o bias.

And _still_ stand there after an unbelievably spectacular performance as if worried they're about to get voted off! _No-one_ would have voted Paul off unless they were completely deaf or completely stupid, and I'm so glad he went on to achieve such success.
