The fan tech works. It works similar to how ducted fan blades work on aircraft. It eliminates the turbulence at the tips of the blades which improves flow.
Thanks for the review. Asus is typically my go to card AIB, but this time around the MSI is the one I was able to get with all the shortages. So while I still wish I had gotten the ASUS, this review at least puts my mind at ease that the MSI will do what I need
Put the TUF VS the Gaming X trio TI's head to head in my PC with the 5950X and an Aorus Master MB so good VRM on EVGA Supernova 1300, the Asus TUF ran slightly cooler but drew less power, but both run very cool and very quiet, the MSI probably because of the higher boost speeds did out perform the TUF by a pretty good margin, btw I have owned all brands of cards so I do not really have a horse in that game lol, also on the Gaming X trio TI I have it seems to be metal coated by graphene spray, def is made of metal lol, that is a totally dif back plate, but this is the TI so maybe it has been changed.
Hey look, sounds like ASUS might actually be taking the TUF name back to the ol' Sabertooth days.... ....but we'll see how they handle the AMD cards first.

That is a crappy mentality, better mentality is that he’s happy to show us the numbers before someone can buy them. Please be a bit more optimistic about a channel that does a lot of good for the community
On the MSI livestreams that they had talking about the new RTX cards they said that it was not 100% graphene it was a mixture of plastic and graphene idk why they are saying to reviewers it's graphene xD
The backplate is most likely glass fiber reinforced nylon with few bits if graphene thrown in. This should move the thermal conductivity from "Insulator" to "Tiny bit shittier insulator", that would firmly seat this feature in the marketing BS category. At least PA66 is mechanically more ridig and thermally stable, compared to common non-composite plastics.
Feel the exact same way. The TUF looks weird with the tire marks all over it to me but its clearly the better buy, I understand that's kind of a stupid thing to nit pick but if I'm paying the massive price these cards command I'd like to get something I like the look of and performs well. Hard to find right now.
My LG GN950-B just came in the mail the other day, been waiting since August. I'm looking forward to watching your review of it in 4K. Love your content, keep it coming.
A Great thing reviewers always forget to mention about the TUF is that the 3080 TUF has the exact same cooler as 3090 TUF. This means that the 3080 TUF gets the same high quality cooler that is meant to cool down the hot and power hungry 3090 TUF
Everyone is talking about overlclocking those new cards, but with that power consumption its better to try an undervolt or even apply liquid metal to GPU and undervolt as well. I personally used liquid metal on GPUs, just use capton tape or lithium grease to protect SMDs
Great review as always :) Could you try to get your hands on a msi rtx 3080 Ventus? Seems to be worth reviewing as some say it underperforms and gets hot. The TUF looks great for the same price tho.
The one thing I'm trying to find but no-one is mentioning is the maximum power increase when overclocking. Not the percentage as that would differ depending on the initial default power, but the maximum power that each card can pull when setting the power to maximum. It almost feels like the reviewers are still under NDA despite the cards being released.

This has left me rather confused now. a lot Furthermore, with the lack of dual bios, and 13 + 3 base specification phase power delivery system (even though there is the 3 x 8 pin power input plug requirement) I am beginning to think more seriously of cancelling my pre-order and going with another AIB. All these 3080 reviews buy I'm here holding off for the 20GB 3080. I feel bad for all the people buying this right before they launch a superior version in the long run.
The 20gb version will come to fight 16gb of vram of the big Navi, the 3080 20gb will come probably at the end of October, which is not enough time to be released at the same price that costs the 3080 10gb right now, which means that the 10gb 3080 will cost at that point the same it costs right now, if not more for the low stock, and the 20gb 3080 will cost around 100-200$ more for having double memory, so if you have a limit of like 700-800$ to spend on a graphics card, which, for example, is my case, the best GPU you can get without surpassing that mark is the 10gb 3080, so no need for me to wait
@@BeamMonsterZeus when consoles have 16gb of ram (although not all 16 is useable) more games will fill up the vram in the future. You're not buying the 3080 for 1 year.

They all look the same! The shroud is identical, you see the radiator fins from the side... and it usually looks identical, but bigger. I had the STRIX 1070 and 1080Ti, and honestly the only real difference was scale. Shroud on the 20XXs was the same, I think. If they have kept it the same, then that is a lot of generations without innovation/ redesign. I am a fan of theSTRIX cards, but am going TUF this time. The aluminium is cleaner, more mature and elegant. If it handles heat better, that is an extra benefit.
@@pingchen5291 Good choice TUF is great I'm impressed with it and it has the coolest tempratures compared to the rest of the 3080s! I'm going for the Strix OC or the TUF OC, The Strix OC already seems the best overclocking card according to leaks.

5:05 zero airflow from the card right to the rear/ outside of your case. given the founders edition cards, there was hope for a better solution. looks like MSI never thought about that a second, just put a big ass cooler on the card as usual. cools the card quiet and nicely, but leaves all the heat from 300W+ inside your case. no innovation at all. in terms of style, a lightbar and on the side - again - only the small MSI logo illuminated.😁🤦♂️ but hey they printed another RTX logo on top.. MSI trying to be cheap?! - a RTX Gaming Z/X series card that doesnt look Premium at all. as uninspired as it gets, even 20 series cards look much better - all they had over the 10 Series is added RGB and at least a pretty backplate. Its 2020, we cant have that for just 699.. 🤡 Looks like they really cut budget to go full attack mode - thats me trying to be positive about it.
That depends on the fins direction but many professionals prefer blower style card cause even though they run hot they are blowing air out of the Case and reducing over all temps
I just ran a GPU and CPU stress test at the same time to max both components at 100% for 15 minutes. I then stopped the GPU stress test. I noticed a drop of 1-2 degrees in CPU temp after disabling the GPU test which leads me to believe my open air 2080 Ti doesn't contribute heat in a meaningful way. My system is 100% air cooled. 2 front intake fans, CPU air cooler, 1 exhaust fan. Even in a worst-case scenario that I never actually encounter when using my system, the difference was 1-2 degrees. I think concerns of open air GPU heat dump are simply intuition guesses without actually testing it.
Buying this card at the 11pm launch was just like buying ACDC tickets. Websites crashing, lots of adrenaline... but in the end, I was able to secure this card and can't wait until it arrives in a couple weeks.
We don't know yet if Suprim will be the flagship. But considering the name it very well could be. Tho if they are charging this much for Gaming X then how much will the Suprim cost? 850+?
Gaming X is actually the Flagship but it's just that MSI built this card for running quietly this time. Its the quietest card tested so far and it has got the best RGB implementation other than the Gigabyte master and Zotac AMP Extreme. Honestly, I don't think if Asus could ever do the RGB right on their strix cards. The people who have money will still buy the trio X for that better software suite and more customization options.
@@scale...3d the TUF is quieter and cooler than the Gaming X when using the quiet BIOS in the tests I've seen. Depends if they're looking for the GPU looks or function, because even if the TUF looks worse/have worse RGB it still is better and cheaper.
@@kaitoux8413 I didn't talk about the looks of TUF, it was the strix because last time it was only RGB and this time they made it ARGB but the ARGB modes are really few which aren't implemented as well except for the comet mode. And for the Trio, yes I agree that TUF has done a good job this time but as far as noise normalized tests go, Trio X performs better than the TUF at same noise level with greater performance even if it's for 1 or 2 fps gain. So, it really depends on the budget. If I had the budget, I would definitely go for the Trio X even if it's expensive because its just better in many way. Trio X also comes with Zero frozr as it's the flagship and there's no such mode on TUF. So, it's just a different overall experience going for the flagship and you couldn't complain much if you have the money to go for it. Its just a nicer experience overall. 😇😇😇
@@scale...3d The "Zero Frozr" is just the fan stop mode, which the TUF does have and probably most models this time around, as the FE model also have it. Also at least in this video, the TUF is the one performing better at the noise normalized test, they're mostly the same but the TUF still performs slightly better when you consider memory and VRM temperatures, other reviews show similar story with the TUF in the Quiet BIOS having similar temperatures, noise and same performance or within margin of error.
@@adrianstan5794 The TUF will be limited to 375W no matter what with its 2x8-pin power connectors. If you shunt mod to bypass the power limits the Gaming X will be able to exceed this.

Here in Australia, PCCG is listing the OC version of this card for $1071 USD ($1469 AUD). Why is it so much more expensive here? I know it's a moot point, as you can't actually buy one anyway, but still, that's over 40% more than advertised. That's pretty significant
Thanks for the very detailed review! I believe this is the best looking AIB card so far, but I think I will try to get the TUF or the FTW3 depending on how that one is reviewed. The lack of an aluminum backplate, extra power delivery and no/little increased power limit despite the 3rd PCIE 8 pin connector on this card are kind of disappointing.
The custom card prices in Germany are insane. The FE is 699€ and i "preordered" the MSI Gaming X Trio for 840€, paying 140€ extra in comparison to the FE. Custom cards start at 740€ and go up to 925€ for the ROG Strix. And those prices were before the launch. I think I'll cancel my order and try to get my hand on a FE with those prices
The back of the card being hot could be an indication that the backplate is indeed more efficient as advertised. One of it's jobs is to conduct heat away from the card, so a hot backplate means a well-working backplate.

So glad I purchased the TUF day 1 from micro center!
Was able to order a ASUS TUG 3080 OC yesterday in nightshift here in Germany.
They had 5 in Stock at midnight and it was gone after 10 min.
Happy it was the TUF they got in Stock.
It will ship end of next week.
On which stores are you ordering in Germany? Trying to get one myself these days but all I see are some 999e prices and "add to wish list" :(

They got some stock again it seems. But from what i seen so far the TUF is one of the best.
Got a STRIX OC on release day with delivery end of september. Seems like europe has more supply than the US
Maybe just less bots in Europe :) Also, there is a supply shortage for regular priced cards. If you want to pay 100-150e more, then you can get one "soon".
@@mdsremac We have anti-scalping laws in place in Germany that can hit people like this pretty hard and are applicable always, not just in national emergencies.
Good comprehensive review Steve
Ordered a Gaming X (in rush 5 min after release) for 819€ when a TUF OC was available for 699€, now both aren't on stock (i didn't get one too because stock was empty when I paid) and now the TUF OC costs 849€, I regret everything. I think I just cancel my order and get a TUF when the price dropped in a few weeks, if it ever will...

But yes, you're right at all.
I spent some time looking for reviews and overclockers uk being down most of the day i couldn't get on the site until later in the day, went for the TUF OC after seeing some high praise, then exchange rate changed cause of Brexit so i got slapped with an extra 30 on top... Had to pay a bit more but i'm not cancelling to go back further in the queue to get my card. Also realised i could have went with the regular tuf aswell.
@del635 second best xd I doubt....3090 is best, 3080ti is 2nd best, 3080 is 3rd best, Big Navi flagship is 4th, 3070ti is 5th, 3070 is 6th, Big Navi XT is 7th, and then 2080ti in 8th..

why would i want such an expensive GPU, when my current GPU can play all current games just fine?

Man I loved my Z77 Sabertooth motherboard.. only just retired it in January. Paired with the 3770K it gave me such a good value for money for all those years!
Exactly! My sabertooth x79 motherboard is still rocking as my file server. Great quality but then Asus took it in a "gamer" direction.
Strix Vega 56 was the worst card i've ever owned
I love how you take the cards apart. It's really helpful for me to see the PCB size regarding water block installs.
Yey thanks for the effort 👍
i got this card and it is amazing, looks awesome and have found no problems. Backplate and all the jazz doesn't bother me, and looks cool as. Card currently will perform better than the one in the review since they did a PCB replacment
Review a strix when you get it. Best Buy has it listed at 850 and that’s insane, I wanna see if it’s actually that price and how good it is
Incredibly jealous that you got to test one... i managed to order mine on Thursday, excited for it to arrive along with my MSI Unify X570 mobo :)
The best rtx3080 right now is the one you can buy. So none 😅
i wont a lottery! got my trio now !
Steve spends a lot of time reminding viewers about the poor availability of 3080's, and seems genuinely pleased about it.
He gets off on it.
That is a crappy mentality, better mentality is that he’s happy to show us the numbers before someone can buy them. Please be a bit more optimistic about a channel that does a lot of good for the community
@@Dracossaint Sarcasm, dude. Look it up.

Nice spatula collection Steve! 😂
On the MSI livestreams that they had talking about the new RTX cards they said that it was not 100% graphene it was a mixture of plastic and graphene idk why they are saying to reviewers it's graphene xD
because they're proven to be shady
The backplate is most likely glass fiber reinforced nylon with few bits if graphene thrown in. This should move the thermal conductivity from "Insulator" to "Tiny bit shittier insulator", that would firmly seat this feature in the marketing BS category. At least PA66 is mechanically more ridig and thermally stable, compared to common non-composite plastics.
Ugh I prefer this model visually over any other AIB. Too bad it feels inadequate to the TUF model.
Hope you get your hands on the asus strix soon!
Looking forward to the EVGA 3080 reviews! Keep up the great work!
I personally used liquid metal on GPUs, just use capton tape or lithium grease to protect SMDs
its called " Trio " so it has to have 3 power connectors :)
You made some sense right there! 😂😂
Great review as always :) Could you try to get your hands on a msi rtx 3080 Ventus? Seems to be worth reviewing as some say it underperforms and gets hot. The TUF looks great for the same price tho.
this review is basically just him telling us how TUF is a better investment haha
Thanks for this review, I'm taking msi gaming x trio off of my list of possible 3090 cards I want. Looks like Asus TUF or ROG Strix it is
Jonathan S. The Fallen i’m still torm between the FE and the asus line man. I have a 1080ti strix right now and has been amazing, but the look of the founder’s edition looks pretty awesome. I don’t have much time left to choose what I’ll be trying to spam in my cart this coming thursday. :(
Ehh im in the market for 3090 myself too but i wouldnt discount either msi gaming x trio, asus tuf or strix versions they are all very good, i think between them its just better to buy whatever is cheapest unless strix blows them out of the water which i really doubt
@@randyb9544 yeah the fe version actually looks good, Im just not happy with its thermals on the 3080 but let's see what the reviews say about the 3090 fe model. i'm using a 2070 rog strix that i got to replace an evga 1080 that died :(
@@h1tzzYT yeah that's true, overall they will perform similarly, I usually go up a tier or two from the base models since i expect better components and hopefully better lifespans.
Jonathan S. The Fallen oh rip. Sorry to hear that man. I’m still running a 1080ti strix. I couldn’t be happier with the ASUS card. My motherboard is their z170 deluxe and has taken care of my 6700K for years! It’s a hard choice, but I still think I’ll end up going for the founders card because I would like to watercool it down the line. I bet the waterblock for the pcb will be small!
Thanks for the helpful in-depth reviews, I've been using them to choose new parts for a few years now.
I have the MSI Gaming X on order and now second guessing my choice. Maybe I should be cancelling my order and going the Tuf or Gigabyte...
The best 3080 is the one in your hand. Don't cancel it if you'll get it faster than the others.
I'd cancel, and wait. You will have this for a long time, the better product may last much longer and perform better. Check out the video from Steve at Gamers Nexus about MSI. It's pretty interesting. I won't buy from MSI. Good luck whatever you do. :)
DBJones There are horror stories by just about any and every AIB partner. Have a 1080 from MSI that has never given an issue. I’m not big on majority of their laptop offerings but, have had success with their cards.
This has left me rather confused now. a lot
Furthermore, with the lack of dual bios, and 13 + 3 base specification phase power delivery system (even though there is the 3 x 8 pin power input plug requirement) I am beginning to think more seriously of cancelling my pre-order and going with another AIB. For what is sold as a premium AIB video card it follows very closely to the reference specification and seems to not offer much 'added value'.
Interested in everyone's thoughts as it is a big chunk of money and these days we need to spend a little wisely.
@@nSquared75 Hello n Squared. I'm sure they have good stuff, and I'm sure that all AIB partners aren't 100% perfect. But when you actually see/hear about horrible treatment, you have to make a stand. That's really it. Thanks for replying. :)
Waiting for rtx 3080 aorus xtreme. Thx for review
Oh mighty algorithm please accept my tribute.
I wanted this one but leaning towards the TUF now. Thanks for these reviews man!
These 3080's are huuuuuge, I cannot imagine what some of the 3090 cards will look like
All the water blocks are for 3080/3090. The board size appears to be the same.
Glad they're not doing that red shroud anymore. Black and grey goes with everything.
All these 3080 reviews buy I'm here holding off for the 20GB 3080. I feel bad for all the people buying this right before they launch a superior version in the long run.
What in the world do you need 20GB of VRAM for? You specifically, not asking the comment section for a lecture.
Benign or Design RDR2 and Watch dogs legion use over 10GB
@@BeamMonsterZeus when consoles have 16gb of ram (although not all 16 is useable) more games will fill up the vram in the future. You're not buying the 3080 for 1 year.
If you're doing 2k high refresh rate, you don't need 20gb of vram. If doing 4k, then I would wait for big Navi and Nvidia response.
really valuable content. Thanks for all the individual testing !
In 6 months the world is going to be much different all these shortages will be over plus your probably going to have a 3080 ti by then, so buying something now will probably hurt you in the long run I will be waiting for all the hype to die down. The best thing to do is wait until 2021 some time and then buy something by then all the new cards and game consoles will be out and all the hype will be over.
Always something new around the corner. I shall wait, and wait, and wait. No ty.
Well, only if cyberpunk can delay another 6 months

How long are you gonna wait until you lose your interest of playing games?
Thank you so much for normalized testing, it means a lot!
All the OC's I have seen have been pretty mediocre on Ampere.
Good to know! I was trying to decide between the msi one and the asus tuf one. Now the choice is clear thanks!
Literally looks like a ROG Strix 2080 TI with a light strip. That's questionable 😂
Love the hole in the tamper sticker
I don't know why but I feel as if that PCB made in China is screaming at my face....
Your pc parts are made from China, it's been like that for years, may as well just haunt you in your sleep
Thank you! As a current 2080 Gaming X Trio owner, which I had to repaste and tighten twice, voiding my warranty, because the store said it had no issues, although it was screaming every 2 or so minutes, I'm not spending my money on any MSI 3000 GPU.
they need to start releasing products when they actually have them to sell.
Thanks for your awesome reviews ! ! ! ! !
5:05 zero airflow from the card right to the rear/ outside of your case.
given the founders edition cards, there was hope for a better solution.
looks like MSI never thought about that a second, just put a big ass cooler on the card as usual.
cools the card quiet and nicely, but leaves all the heat from 300W+ inside your case.
no innovation at all.
in terms of style, a lightbar and on the side - again - only the small MSI logo illuminated.😁🤦♂️
but hey they printed another RTX logo on top..
Looks like they really cut budget to go full attack mode - thats me trying to be positive about it.
That depends on the fins direction but many professionals prefer blower style card cause even though they run hot they are blowing air out of the Case and reducing over all temps
@@rx58000 You can have non-blower style cards that still vent some heat through a rear IO cutout through smart fin placement.
I'll buy it from you Steve. I'll even drive to Melbourne to pick it up and do a border run back to Sydney.
Well that's disappointing for a flagship model.
Buying this card at the 11pm launch was just like buying ACDC tickets. Websites crashing, lots of adrenaline... but in the end, I was able to secure this card and can't wait until it arrives in a couple weeks.
gaming x is no longer the flagship. for 3000 series, suprim>gaming x->ventus.
TUF ROCKS ! power delivery system getting it done!
So the asus tuf gaming is literally just better from all points of view. Thats the conclusion.
Unless you want to shunt mod it
@@imadecoy. Why?
@@adrianstan5794 The TUF will be limited to 375W no matter what with its 2x8-pin power connectors. If you shunt mod to bypass the power limits the Gaming X will be able to exceed this.
@@imadecoy. it does not matter.... you cannot overclock more the chip. It s already pushed to limit. So you are wrong, like always!
@@dorintony I guess you missed the part where I said "bypass the power limits". The chip will always go further, even if it takes LN2 to do so.
As much as I wanted the tuf card. I managed to get a MSI gaming x trio, albeit a bit more expensive, but I actually got one. And seeing as that I don’t overclock, I think that I won’t see a difference between the two cards so I’m fairly happy with my purchase. A lot of people are just saying that TUF is way better and while that may be true, at this point you kinda have to get whatever you can.

I got one of these and I can say its an amazing graphics card
MSI or ASUS? That's a TUF choice.
This video really just showcases how much ASUS knocked it out of the park with the TUF Gaming this time around.
no noise benchmark for a card like this makes the review incomplete and useless
did you watch the hole video?
There is a 40dba normalized test towards the end.
Lol
@@chasecrappel9480 thats says me something about thermals and that the fans are capable of atleast producing 40 dba... but how how much less noise does it make???
Here in Australia, PCCG is listing the OC version of this card for $1071 USD ($1469 AUD). Why is it so much more expensive here? I know it's a moot point, as you can't actually buy one anyway, but still, that's over 40% more than advertised. That's pretty significant
One card per video is getting tiresome. Especially when they are the same.
@Clorox Tree I don't see the need for an NDA when the founders isn't a bad card
Great video! Are you going to review the Gigabyte Gaming OC? Or the EVGA XC3? I wonder if they will prevail over the ASUS.
Just a side note, aluminum can be hard to get a hold of right now. Could be why they looked elsewhere but probably not.
It's the PCB though, not the backplate.

Great review, would have loved to seen a power consumption comparison also, do to the graphics cards having different cooling systems, And VRM interested in knowing if there's a difference between the two fan founder's edition, and the three fan cooling system power-wise.
