May I just say how wonderful it is to find a content creator who takes their time explaining and referencing each step! From the bottom of my heart ❤ THANK YOU! 😊 💓
Hi Leila, always a pleasure when you explain thing s so clearly. I am a community health worker and I use validation for collecting data. Your videos help to clarify and organize my data. 👍😊💖
I've been using data validation for a long time but this is a comprehensive tutorial that has taught me more than I knew. Thanks so much, Leila. You're the Queen of Microsoft Excel.
Hi Leila I have Joined an organization where I Do face lots of such problem where I don't have any experience in validation and so on but watching your videos I have just solved all these problems because of the clarity you have in explaining.
I have been using Excel drop-down lists for years and I STILL learned several new things. Thank you so much. That was wonderful. I think I will try that searchable drop-down list video next!
WOW...I spent days trying to figure out a complex drop down list that would fill multiple columns all at once...had most of it figured but couldn't quite get it right...5 minutes of your video and it's done!! THANK YOU! Table reference on another worksheet was the key!
Your whole videos are like excel for dummies. I understand every step of what you are doing. They are all so easy when someone explains it clearly. Perfect! Thanks.
I wish I had learned this when I was younger. I am 55 and working with time sheets and this could really help me. Your information is helping me understand slowly I will try to lean as much as I can. 😊 Thank you.
For two days now I've been looking for a way to use table data as the dynamic reference when using a list in the data validation. NOW I know how to do it using the Indirect -- go to 7:19 in video. THANK YOU.
Another wonderful video, Leila. I use validation for dropdowns all the time, using the Indirect/table method. I teach Excel in a US public library and recommend your channel and Udemy courses to all my students.
Hi Leila, I'm loving your videos as I've been setting aside time to upgrade my Excel skills. At 13:25 of this video, you mentioned to drop a note if we are looking to learn how to use the custom function and the corresponding formula for the "Company code." Can you direct me to the video or the instructions for this? Thank you!
engineer here. i use data validation a lot. and the best use is for choosing materials (pipe, elastomers, etc). what i have is a series of columns that all include data validations. as you pick them, the resulting pipe size, material grade, etc., is chosen from a chart where i use the index+match combo to choose. it's very convenient, quick, and best of all, doesn't require flipping thru hard copy charts (in small print) and possibly making errors.
I do an annual Fire Department Fire Board report and have to input the mileage logged for each Fire call for the Firefighters. So in past I have had to manually look up the individual FF's response as well as to log what type of call that it was. So this will help in having the addresses in a Validation list as well as the Response times as well as the mileage. Thank you for very clear instructions in all of your training.
Wow. This is the second video I have watched. I thought I was a master but you definitely taught me a lot. Still looking for a certain answer so I will look through your videos to see if you addressed it. Thank you Leila!
Leila you make me love EXCEL day after day I never tired of learning with you here and in udemy .although I am not good in English but I get what you say and what you explain
Hi mam am a big fan of ur teachings!!! We can also add to the table without naming the table in the source without using indirect formula, I think we can skip this step as it automatically takes the new rows added!!!
I was looking for an hour now to the solution with the indirect-function you show at 6:50 - thank you so much! I was getting so mad... This doesn't seem to be a problem in other tutorials I saw, it always worked without it so the content creator didn't (have to) show this function.
As usual you add just another extra layer to excel functions I thought I already master:) It's always worth it to watch your basic videos no matter how advanced you are! Thanks Leila!
Wonderful! Ive used data validation when creating Adobe forms, but didn't know how to do it in excel until today. Thank you. I was searching high and low date validation and you provided it easily along with other helpful nuggets. How do you do data validation to require dollar amounts? I see decimals, but I would like the dollar sign included.
This really save my stress! Please I would like to know how to search when you have a very long list validated or how to use few letters to get a validated word in the list
The video and the presentation on the topic were extremely clear and easy to understand. Thank you. I noticed that if an item in the master list is modified then the change does not carry over to instances where the list has been utilized. Not even a Data Refresh helps with the issue. Closing and reopening the spreadsheets picks up the data validation errors and marks (with the classic miniature excel arrow) each cells that contain content previously updated in the master list. Can an existing item in the main list be updated in a way that these changes are consistently reflected throughout all instances of the list, regardless of where it's been placed?
I am a project manager and so need this for recording the tasks I delegate to my people. I just watched the other video you made about the IF formulas, and it's very helpful in making a table for our employee's Key Performance Indicators (KPI). Thank you so much!
Hi Leila, I am really enjoying your Excel classes. I will like to see how programming in the custom function works. Thank you. A big fan from Sierra Leone, West Africa. BR.😊
Am generating a template for estimates which consists of plant, labor and materials. So I use data validation for PLM and then "lookup" to generate the appreciate rates. I used the name manager privously but thanks to this vid, I can switch to tables which will automate all my changes. Great content.
Great. I was looking for the way to include automatically data in the drop sown today I got it. I tried without formatting the range into Excel table, it works well. I just include the whole the column in the range and use it in the data validation with Indirect. Thanks once again Leila.
Hi Leila I got so far a lot of inspirations from your channel, no need to mention that we love you and appreciate the channel. I'm in a mission to establish a project with many activities (tasks and subtasks) with many financing sources, I'm looking to be inspired by an excel sheet where i can track every single task/activity and control the planned budget + actual expenses. The main challenge for me is to produce flexible reports the would be extracted from an excel sheet journal using tools to filter the report as (total, by a task, by a financing source etc) Any tips or links are highly appreciated. Thanks
Brilliant - as always when Leila delivers work. I use validations frequently and still learned a ton watching your video. Thank you for all your hard work - you really are making a difference!
Hi Leila, thanks for all your effort. It worths watching your excel tutorials. Please share such tutorials on word and ppt. No one made a good video worth watching yet. Hope you can do.
Hi Leila, Love your tutorials! I am new to Excel but I am learning a lot thanks to your UA-cam Channel! You are my go-to source when I run into a problem! Thanks Again! Please Keep Up the Good Work!!!
Sensational, Leila! It helped a lot! I needed exactly the solution at minute 5:44 (Using Table References). Congratulations on the excellent video! And thank you very much!
Hello Leila, What about using Validation on Table records? instead of copying and pasting validations, how can the validations carry over when inserting new records? I noticed the formulas and formats do carry over to the new inserted records but the Validations Don't. Is there a way to resolve this? As always, thanks for all your excellent tutorials!
Hye Leila.. It's great to found your channel & I subscribed already.. I'm currently learning how to use data validation in excel(I even don't know what's call till found your video). It' really a big help. I'm stuck with two things. 1) On your example on the Tab Data validation Basics, Column Division, is that possible to enter one letter so it's much easier to select which data we looking for. Example, if I type keyword "B", only data with the header "B" letter on the list will appear, instead scrolling all the data on the list. It will so much help if there's a lot of data on the list. 2) Is it possible If I want to make 2nd column auto update when I select data for the 1st column? On excel, I already create a table contain, Name, Tel No, Address & email.. so, on the data validation part, when I select a particular name which is at the first column , automatically tel. no also will appear on the next column. Hopefully you'll understand my question. Thank you
Thank you for your videos. Always so informative. In regards to data validation, I just selected the column in the source and whatever I add later in that column will appear automatically.
Thank you for your video! Even on functionality I know, you always teach me something new about it :) And yes, I would love to see a video on using the custom formula option to validate the user's entry is within the prescribed syntax.

Dear Leila, this lesson added value, as before watch this video i was aware of basic use of data validation.
Thank you
You're welcome Yasir. I'm glad you found some useful tips here.
I just love you Leila! Thanks for sharing such valuable information and in such a simplex manner. Kudos!
With regards to list-based data validation, is have a rather important question:
How do I create a validation list that inputs specific values, but when a user selects the dropdown arrow, it shows diffferent values?
What I means is that a cell must only allow ("Code") values of:
"A", "B", "C", "D"
The drop-down list, for the ease-of-use benefit of the user, must show more descriptive ("Role") values:
"Current Role A", "Current Role B", "Current Role C", "Current Role D"
Regardless of what the "Role" names are set to, the drop down list must always enter very specific, unalterable values:
"Current Role 4" => "A"
"Current Role 3" => "B"
"Current Role 2" => "C"
"Current Role 1" => "D"
Can this be done?
Very good lecture, pls share the link that teaches how to set the text combine with the number? I really keen to know more. Thanks
Yes, I’ve used data validation quite a lot but have had trouble with indirect and dynamic drop downs. Pity I hadn’t found your vids before switching to xlAdvancedFilter, etc.
