Another hint: wind can sometimes tip outdoor hutches and break the legs. You might consider an ground anchor like a dog tie-out anchor. The dollar store has had them, so they are cheap insurance. 1 on 2 opposing legs should suffice.

We don't get much wind here and these hutches are unbelievably heavy. I think they could withstand a lot, but if someone lived in a hurricane zone, those would be great, or even have the legs cemented in the ground.

I'm still in the research phase of starting a small rabbitry only as a hobby and to eat. You didn't mention if the meat tastes any different. I would assume if they are fine and don't get sick then they probably taste great, too. Good video, I have learned the lesson of treated vs. untreated before and I haven't done it since.

A lot of people love the taste of rabbit. I couldn't tell you from personal experience, as I sell mine. Just like other meat, they say it tastes like chicken. They do grow fast, so if you don't have the space for cows or other livestock you could still grow meat in your backyard. Yes, I regret not building a few things out treated those years ago. Thanks for stopping by!

I work for a treatment plant, the chemicals we use are super diluted and for the most part safe unless in large quantities.
It’a safe tog at the raw chemical on your skin even.
Definitely safe to use for animals except maybe amphibians

Thanks for the information. I hear that treated lumber doesn't last as long as it used too.

Untreated for me. Though i never build with the wood to contact with the soil. I build on rock and on the rocks i put ”syllpapp” (swedish word) like a asphalty tape so the wood doesnt suck up any moist from the rock.
Then i have a roof over the run so that wood never get wet either. On the big run there is just fence. No roof. There the birds are when iam working nearby. Eagles dont attack when im out

Good idea. I also have problems with carpenter bees so hopefully the treated will deter them.

Treated framing, anything the bunny can eat, untreated. I actually make a hutch with doors, where a cage hangs in it, so they never come into contact with the wood. i can pull the cage out, torch it and pressure wash it, put it back.

Great setup man. treated is the way as you say. How do you collect the poop at the bottom of the hutch most easily? would you recommend building a secondary catch tray level with holes in the mesh?

A raised square 1' patio block under each leg will prevent some rot and slow hutch sinking. Manure odor fluctuates with wetness and ambient temperature (even from bucks to doe urine). Outdoors, this should not get too offensive unless really wet. In those cases, you can add a couple inches of gravel after cleaning to soil level. A rabbit/bee keeper over a period of 30 years, and your hutch plans are a nice sound and roomy design. Your hutch has nice flat surfaces to shed the rain. | don't own Valspar - Duramax paint stock - but I should (Lowes-I don't buy much else there ). The best way to protect wood (treated or not), esp. from uv sun, is a good latex paint (2x coats @ highest gloss)(beehive experience). It will cost you a dollar, but it will save $10 in time, labor and replacement materials. I'd rather my rabbits chew latex than oil based paints (I was a hardline oil paint guy most my life). Same philosophy on natural vs treated wood. Rabbits live a short life, hard to know what chemicals accumulate, but as meat for my family, I'd use untreated anywhere rabbits can put their teeth. Treated, anything below floor level for sure. Paint and a little exterior caulk will make up for any insecurity in using areas of untreated wood.

I like your channel and we all have our opinions but any wood that the rabbits can get to I won't use treated. I eat the rabbits so I don't want any chemicals in my food. That's 1 reason some of us get into raising rabbit, so that we aren't eating food filled with chemicals, steroids and hormones. This is just my opinion
