I just drove from South Beach Miami to New Haven Connecticut. 20 hour drive. I’ve never done a drive anywhere near that long in my life. A lot of friends and family recommended podcasts over music, but after the first 2 hours I was bored like crazy and the podcasts I was listening too weren’t doing it for me. Long story short, I just played the audio of your videos for basically 14 hours of the ride, and I’m so thankful that you always have gone the extra mile with not only the visual quality of the content you produce but also the audio. Whether it was the jokes cracked, or the engines ripping, I felt apart of the videos even without being able to physically watch them. I wouldn't say perfectly. Coming from a welder. Definitely not a bad job, but not perfectly. Just unknowledgeable on the subject.
Gavin has said in previous videos that he is not the best at welding. He is learning. And on top of that sheet metal is the worst to weld. You can't do beads. You have to tac back and forth the whole piece until it fully welded.

It’s easier to control the weld when you grind the paint off but it came out a WHOLE lot better good job 👍🏻
Man, I was watching this and when he said he was gonna weld it I was hoping he would grind it down to get a good clean weld. Even the worst welder can do a decent job with a good prepped surface lol

At least you found a project to practice welding on. Got my welding start on small town race cars and demo cars because well they don’t have to look pretty, they just have to function. I like how you always try to learn everything new you can.
honestly I think Gavin handled this the best he could, the only way he could have made it look prettier is to replace the whole quarter panel which is too much time and too much money to do, it's gonna look so clean when it has the new wrap

that's probably exactly what I would've done in this situation, it came out honestly really good considering where it started, and once its all re-wrapped with the widebody properly installed, it should come out super nice

When you weld in a patch panel cut it over size and use a flanging pliers to form a recess in the exiting panel(or a step roller) to make an overlap and make stronger weld by plug or spot welding it and not distorting the panel

For your first time doing body work I’d say you did really good, i had the same mind set as you when you brought this up about the sheet metal and the seem sealer and everything.

Grinder pro tip when making delicate cuts:
Trace it out with Sharpie
Do multiple light passes over and over until you break through.
Save you partially used wheels for times you need to make tight turns. Smaller wheel = tighter corners.

If the welds are blowing through use your air compressor attachment to cool down the metal before adding more tacs
May not completely fix your issue but it will definitely help

Y’all need to be careful with the epa and talk about what they’re trying to do. Your race cars are at stake word needs to be spread and you need to message your governors about the rpm act so we can save racing

I’m saying in general this is an issue that needs to be talked about and the rpm act needs support. Lund racing had a video about it watch it the epa wants to make it to where if it has a vin you can’t modify it at all

Gavin definitely started getting the hang of it on the second quarter panel. I was cringing a little when he was putting all those beads and tacks in a straight line. You have to jump around so you don't get the metal too hot because that sheet metal will warp really bad. It won't get seen though. Pretty awesome how he just goes for it though.

Also Gavin a tip for welding hold it down constantly don't just tap the welder it'll leave ugly beads, just practice on a piece of quater inch steel and make sure it's penetrating through the metal without leaving holes

Eh idk. The car has very few miles on it he said. So it was basically new when he widebodied it. And you could tell if it had gotten hit. The paint would be chipped really badly

Can I just say I appreciate that they are taking the time to do a job done wrong right like this car could have that ability to be a really nice car but due to the previous owners not knowing how to do a job these guys have to come and fix it and I appreciate people doing a job on a car a job done right
Btw the motorcycle windshield fasteners(rubber expanding nuts) are often shipped with widebody kits because they allow misalignment while being a sealent-less fastener that allows the sheet metal and fiber glass to expand and move at different rates. Rigid mounting fiberglass to a sheet metal panel will crack the fiberglass and paint as it flexes from heat and vibration. A better way is floating nut inserts and rubber/plastic washers (As used on real racecars) but requires more care during assembly. Rivnuts will mess up the paint on the widebody as they do not allow for expansion or vibration isolating. That body kit was installed like shat tho lol

Welding is so fun. I have a class in school that teaches us how to weld
Just a little learning tip or whatever if you clean the metal up of the paint off of it and if use WD-40 to spray on the metal you won’t get BBs stuck to it And make sure your gas is all lol
So glad this car isn't going to end up in Junk of the Month. It may have had a sketchy history, but there's still so much potential with this car.
Gavin when welding don’t touch the tip of the nozzle to the metal, it can mess up the weld bad keep it just before tuch
For your first fab project id say it turned out pretty damn good! and also half a bucket of Bondo and she'll look mighty fine lol

Supposed to clean up both mating surfaces (sand off paint) before trying to weld to get a good bead going. Better contact and cleaner welds
Always prep and clean your welding surface first before you tack it.....its look better then when you first got it for sure.

It's probably sealed up already, but you could put bondo over the plate and sand it down to get t least some shape back to that part
