In the early 2000s there was a big shift in the auto industry. Cars became more like appliances and they started being built to keep you coming back to spend.

I love this old video . I still own a 1985+1887 RR. For over 30 yrs I have put up with the standard "whines','clunks' + 'rolling', let alone the standard oil leaks + 'kiss of death' Lucas electronics. But to this day the vision + ride is unmatched. Modern computerised everything gives nothing but very expensive sensor failures. But I will probably buy one more to see me through. After all if I could deal with Lucas, I should manage software issues, or have plenty of warranty. Thanks for uploading this video.

Well 7 months ago got my 1989 range rover county, and have seen very little rust on the chasis or on the body... engine is in good condition, fixing the interior, undercoating on the belly, sound deadning on the interior to make the car last a few more decades.
Only 1 complain, THERES GOTTA BE MORE MECHANICS for these classic cars in my country haha.

Great video! A friend of mine in country Victoria had a Range Rover for well over 20 years from new and loved the way it handled corrugations and long distance travel, the Japanese stuff was around, but he wasn't interested because they were agricultural in comparison! The Piano piece at 18:00 reminds me of the theme tune to another Aussie classic, A Country Practice :-)

I loved my 1978 I used it as a daily drive and for trials, marshalling at off road events and as a recovery vehicle for our excavator fleet. Never did it let me down the engine ran for over 150,000 miles of heavy right foot the engine unfortunately died due to the ex wife not checking the oil.

Lovely vehicle. I had a 1986 petrol-injection auto and a 1988 2.4 diesel Vogue. The diesel, while rudimentary and crude by today's standards was by far my favourite. Did just under 100,000 hard miles with that one and it was like new when sold in 1995. At the same time I ran a 1990 Land Cruiser 80 series with the 1HD-T turbo diesel engine. That one suffered one big failure when its injector pump failed over 100 miles from home. Also its manual gearbox synchromesh was very poor. Nevertheless in 1998 I bought a 100 series diesel Land Cruiser automatic which I've still got [Sept2017] and happens to have had a new front wing today to replace a rusted one. In the meantime I also had a 2003 3.0 diesel [BMW engine] Range Rover which was also great and didn't have the slightest fault in the 35,000 miles I kept it. Only replaced because I had a deal I couldn't refuse for an Audi Q7.
I still miss the 2.4 diesel Range Rover [classic] today. It does seem to have shrunk with time and its 100 inch wheelbase seems particularly short these days. Its work is done today by the Land Cruiser and a Ford Ranger pickup, plus a 2017 Volvo XC90.
Is interesting to compare the XC90 with the Classic RR. The old 2.4 VM unit had all of 112hp and no torque under 2200 revs, so needed revving to the governor before changing up when towing or on very steep roads. They both weigh near enough the same but the Volvo 2.0 engine has 235hp and nearly 500Nm torque [some 85Nm more than even the 4.2 Land Cruiser] and pulls like a train from 1400 revs [as does the Cruiser]. Fuel consumption for the Classic diesel was 26mpg on the road compared to 38mpg for the Volvo. Vastly more space inside the Volvo and equipment can no more be compared than off-road ability of course.
Overall I found the 1988 RR Classic diesel to be very reliable indeed, with only the occasional nipping up of the fuel lift pump on the side of the engine needed apart from regular servicing. More reliable than the 80 series Land Cruiser and not far off that of the 100 series, although in 190,000 miles the 100 series is still on its original exhaust and has needed little other than routine servicing [and now a new wing] in fully 19 years of use.
1988 was the year that the RR gained hidden front door hinges by the way.

I have Range Rover 3.9 Vogue, 1990. I've been with it for 12 years. It always makes me happy. I was lucky enough to test a 1991 Mercedes G300 D for a week. I know it is tough, solid and perhaps more reliable than Range Rover in many ways, but I guarantee you one thing: it can never be as comfortable and luxurious in those years as it was. Range Rover. I was very uncomfortable in the G-class on rocky roads and on the road it is very stiff. The range rover cradles you like a baby with its soft suspension.
