I love Conor Oberst's style as a musician and visual artist. These music vdeos are fantastic and full of great symbolism. I will keep listening to you for as long as you make art.
This video always reminds me of Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa. I remember the audience responding to a band this way when I was young, except they were throwing glass beer pitchers, and the drummer got seriously injured. Cains switched to cardboard beer pitchers after that. The bunting is probably still part of the decor there, though I haven't been in years. And this song is just perfect.
Seriously. His music is so powerful and inspirational. I dont think i go a day without putting on Bright Eyes song. Never stop Conor, your music means so much to so many people!
Your class, your caste, your country, sect, your name or your tribe There's people always dying, trying to keep them alive There are bodies decomposing in containers tonight In an abandoned building where A squatter's made a mural of a Mexican girl With fifteen cans of spray paint in a chemical swirl She's standing in the ashes at the end of the world Four winds blowing through her hair But when great Satan's gone, the whore of Babylon She just can't sustain the pressure where it's placed She caves The Bible's blind, the Torah's deaf, the Qu'ran's mute If you burn them all together, you get close to the truth still They are pouring over Sanskrit on the ivy league moons While shadows lengthen in the sun Cast on a school of meditation built to soften the times And hold us at the center while the spiral unwinds It's knocking over fences, crossing property lines Four winds, cry until it comes And it's the sum of man Slouching towards Bethlehem A heart just can't contain all of that empty space It breaks, it breaks, it breaks Well, I went back to my rented Cadillac and company jet Like a newly orphaned refugee, retracing my steps All the way to Cassadaga to commune with the dead They said, 'You'd better look alive.' And I was off to old Dakota where a genocide sleeps In the black hills, the bad lands, the calloused east I buried my ballast, I made my peace Heard four winds leveling the pines But when great Satan's gone, the whore of Babylon She just can't remain with all that outer space She breaks, she breaks, she caves, she caves
When this album was being written i guess he was watching that HBO show Carnivale. He integrated tons of imagery and episode titles, which of course is biblical imagery and even in certain songs mirrored and reworked/adapted narratives into songs. Some of the songs were reflections on characters from the show and even many of the videos evoke the dustbowl depression era and Carnivale's visual sensibility.
This song is probably my favorite. It reminds me of home. Keep doing what you do. Cause all of us fans, love it ^_^ even if you don't think you do good. That's IF you think that, haha. p.s. I loved your hair like this ^.^
Imagine this being your first time seeing Bright Eyes in person. Seeing Conor and everyone else performing on stage and you're having to throw trash at them. 😆
It's a reference to the Iraq War. "Great Satan" is a term that some people in the Middle East (especially Iranians) use about the United States. The Iranian government has used it regularly (Shaytân-e Bozorg). The line about the "Whore of Babylon" is a biblical reference, but it's also a reference to Iraq because the site of Babylon is located in the country. It's basically saying when Great Satan goes (i.e. the United States leaves Iraq) the "Whore of Babylon" (i.e. those in Iraq who welcomed the United States so they could gain power - those who "whored themselves out" when the war started) won't be able to sustain their hold over the country and it will descend into chaos. That's exactly what happened ultimately with ISIS - the United States disengaged and the Iraq government was almost overthrown. This song was written just after the Iraq war started and the album it was on was full of references to it, but that seems to have been lost with time and now nobody really understands what it's supposed to be about.

Omg this reminds me of being a freshman in college. Good times, listening to some good tunes. Conor is the best
A school of meditation built to soften the times, and keep us in the center while the spiral unwinds.

What a great video, thank you
Your class, your caste, your country, sect, your name or your tribe
There's people always dying, trying to keep them alive
There are bodies decomposing in containers tonight
In an abandoned building where
A squatter's made a mural of a Mexican girl
With fifteen cans of spray paint in a chemical swirl
She's standing in the ashes at the end of the world
Four winds blowing through her hair
But when great Satan's gone, the whore of Babylon
She just can't sustain the pressure where it's placed
She caves
The Bible's blind, the Torah's deaf, the Qu'ran's mute
If you burn them all together, you get close to the truth still
They are pouring over Sanskrit on the ivy league moons
While shadows lengthen in the sun
Cast on a school of meditation built to soften the times
And hold us at the center while the spiral unwinds
It's knocking over fences, crossing property lines
Four winds, cry until it comes
And it's the sum of man
Slouching towards Bethlehem
A heart just can't contain all of that empty space
It breaks, it breaks, it breaks
Well, I went back to my rented Cadillac and company jet
Like a newly orphaned refugee, retracing my steps
All the way to Cassadaga to commune with the dead
They said, 'You'd better look alive.'
And I was off to old Dakota where a genocide sleeps
In the black hills, the bad lands, the calloused east
I buried my ballast, I made my peace
Heard four winds leveling the pines
But when great Satan's gone, the whore of Babylon
She just can't remain with all that outer space
She breaks, she breaks, she caves, she caves
Man this takes me back !

Omg he liked Carnivale too??? I'm so happy. It was totally cancelled too soon.
This song is probably my favorite.

Imagine this being your first time seeing Bright Eyes in person.

if you've seen him in Texas or Dallas he gets angry but still puts on a good show

Shes amazing. Also, the song Southern State by bright eyes is about her. Check it out
Can you imagine the 2 angry sad people who put thumbs down on this one . I feed bad for them .
Can this be 10 years ago I’m getting old…. Seems like yesterday I was at the ryman
Did i hear "when great Satan's gone" lol, if that was the lyric it was really unexpected
Ligierthegreensun I forgot I commented that but, yeah I was just trying to make a joke, I personally like the song

Anyone know a secret corner on the internet where they show that video in 480p?
When you realize the intro is "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"...
Oh my god! Now i cant i hear it
Ugh I really regret seeing this lol
awww u hide ur channel :) just keepin these vids for the conor oberst website eh? well i love this one a lot conor. please dont ever leave bright eyes. btw, ur newest album: The People's Key is a great. u guys rly pulled thru.

She gets pissed even though it's a video I don't this was rehearsald if it was she still gets mad the drummer I hope they are still together. She had a great solo album too wasn't she with another bad on saddle Creek? Some body help me out Rainer Maria?
Santa Claus is coming to town.....
Is that Ashton Kutcher in the audience?
No, its david koresh's son.
what's the meaning for the crowd throwing things at bright eyes? is it because of the anti religious message?
I couldn't throw something at Conor even for a music video, that kind of blasphemy is unforgivable
It's not blasphemy. Devil is in our bad acts, in our own misery, not in a rock song.
Digital Ash TCG not even panties?
@@Tsumami__ Alrighty found the loophole
Hey! Where are The Killer? :)
Voltei aos meus 15 anos ❤️
This is like to give roses to the pigs! They would smash it petals into the mud...

Yessiree he was in a band called Better Oblivion Community Center that put out an album last year and this band Bright Eyes put a new album out in August.
I got to this song by decrypting a Taylor swift song. Huh. Weird
this video sucks, really dont wanna hear a bunch of people yelling in the background
Jace Karloff this video is interesting
the music and video is interesting sure, but they didnt need to cover up the music in the video with people yelling, its pretty obvious whats going on if you just watch instead of ruining the music, which is why im watching the video in the first place....
I don't kmow why this song is better than the cover of the killers, this version is soo boring
The Killers covered Bright Eyes
