There is an easy way to add shadow. Duplicate the layer, then with the duplicated layer you have 2 options. option 1: use curve and reduce the color to the darkest (black). Option 2, use alpha lock and paint with a larg black brush. It is faster than the selection.

What is the size of the canvas that you were using.?

I usually draw/design jewelry as actual size in 8.5x11inch, but this was 2388x1668px which is my iPad screen size. This was just for an iPad demo.
