Catch and Cooking Awesome possum / Day 26 Of 30 Day Survival Challenge Texas

  • Only a few days left and we are forced to eat possum once again. After catching and cooking the first possum almost 20 days ago, you would think I'd be ready for another. But they are just too fatty so it really is not what I want to be eating after 26 days of similar meals. All I want is a salad and something that's not possum or raccoon.

    You're are very talented person. 1. To go out in the woods with only a couple of supplies. 2. Go the whole 30 days (so far) 3. Go that long without your adorable two girls. 4. You're not afraid to hide your religion and I love that. I bet if a lot of us, if we were in that position where you are we would not do this. You are a great human being.
    Like this so Fowler and Chris see this.

      Only a couple supplies? They have a riffle with a night vision scope that can also shoot arrows. A machete. A saw. A fishing pole. Traps. Water purifiers. Pots. Pans. Knives. Fire starts. Water bag. Miles of cordage. Hammocks. Sleeping bags. Rain tarps. Other fishing gear. Like all they dont have is the kitchen sink.

    Couple of suggestions.......
    I used to take my kids backpacking when they were little. Have a show that's not so intense and take the girls, maybe only for a week or two. It would appeal to our youths and get them interested in the outdoors. Also, explain to, and coach our next generation of campers the right way of enjoying the wild side. You guys are great!

    • @chefinthewild1551
      @chefinthewild1551 5 років тому +9

      George Hrenchir I’d go vegetarian after a month of that diet. Zach has a special diet of only meat and fat that he did on alone that he said he wanted to do again on this challenge I believe. He said it made him feel amazing, 🤔. Don’t think I could do straight meat that long though.

    • @georgehrenchir3408
      @georgehrenchir3408 5 років тому +7

      @@chefinthewild1551 haha I understand, at least in the short term I'd be all over some salads. I know he had been in a ketotic state, by accident, during Alone. Ketosis doesn't preclude veggies, especially those that he could forage, as they would be relatively low carb. And I'm sure there was a significant carb base in the prickly pear tuna as well. My only thought was the calorie density of meat, plus the ketosis of high fat, moderate protein is great, but hell for flavor and some micronutrients, I'd throw a side salad of dandelion leaves or cattails shoots fried up in that raccoon fat. Something lol. Even the cambrium of the pine trees around them are edible, or pine needle tea for a different flavor. Just my thoughts, there are consistently plenty of edibles. I may go back and look at the videos again and see what I can spot, just for fun.

    Another option would be to learn and experiment with the local wild forage. Basic agriculture like you're talking about isn't a bad idea, but slightly detracts from the catch and cook mentality if you want to keep that. If I were personally doing this for a long term situation I would 100% put in a basic garden, but perhaps keep that for season 3 if you plan on doing it in the same location for all seasons.

    Ok gave it a "think". You asked for suggestions and opinions. So, 1) If you lose weight you have failed to survive. Anytime you attempt to survive you need to plot it to the end game; do you die of old age first OR die of starvation. Old age of course is the only win scenario. 2) Match or Better entropy. Last day of your challenge do you have everything already prepared to put your feet up, relax and simply enjoy your next day or are you still needing to chase game. Feet up is the only win here again as success comes by gaining one up on entropy. 3) Next challenge take 1 and 2 into heartfelt consideration, take a helicopter to the top of some impossible peek and attempt to walk out at the bottom a month later winning. You would face continual changes of biome and environment and food mix as you journeyed, you would pass through food bare zones you'd have to take time to pre-plan traversing and gaining food preserved to do so, and each opportunity you would have to gain something that increases your life expectancy to beat entropy. You made a sling shot, that is one such made item. How about a cook pot? A weaving stone? A fish basket? You harvested animals, where are the pelts, spare belts, hats, shoes and coats?

    Zach I am going to give back to you in the form of a building tip. Texas has lots of Huisache with those lovely 2 inch thorns. When dried those thorns make for some rather nice nails for building with. I remember reading a story about an Indian fellow that made his little shack useing Oak and Mesquite for bords and Huisache thorns as nails.

    First of all: I love Cheese too! :-) Man, what a graet Episode! I like to say it´s the best Video so far. Not because of the Content, it´s just you could see the extra Day you had. You can clearly see the Time and effort you´ve put into it. I love it, great Work!

      doesn't really work like that people have live like this for far longer the the modern age of paranoia. cross contamination only happens when you tuch stuff from before cooking to thing after cooking and I never do that over a few hundred days under my belt in the wild and never been sick

    You could try making flour with the acorns, add some seasoning and fry the fish in raccoon fat for a proper fried fish dinner.

    that maggot station old poachers trick here in England we used to put it in streams or lakes with trout in so they would be where you could get them easy, often it was just some old roadkill, i often wonder why it not shown in survival programs with old bits of carcass yer it mean cant stew the meat maybe as with some meats they hung until have maggots pheasants one example hare the same so hang for maggots then after a while eat the meat as been tenderised, for seeds chia and mustard and cress all fast growers
