i think its a concept that runs along his whole castle face theme. i've always imagined it to sort of symbolize our ego. or how we live in the walls we built from our life experiences

I always interpreted it like the castles at the end of every level in the original Mario Bros. for NES - like, every level, you get to the end and swipe the flag and the castle goes boom and you head off to the next level... where it happens all over again i.e. the destroyed fortress reappears. Anyone else? Or am I just crazy? ;/
