Thanks for the excellent Pinion factory tour. I ride a Priority 600X with a Gates belt drive and a Pinion C1.12 gearbox. I have been riding for over 56 years now. And so many different bikes. My 600X with the Pinion has become my daily rider and also my go-to bikepacking bike. All of the rest of my bikes are jealous because the 600X "Rubber Band" gets ridden the most. Thanks again for the inside look at Pinion. 🤓
@@tristanbogaard I started counting when I was 14 working in a local bike shop. The production of your videos is first-rate, excellent work. I'm watching the rest of the series, particularly the companies I have done business with. Pinion, Gates, and Tubus...🤓
as a 64 year young cyclist and maintenance engineer. I have really enjoyed this factory tour. I have subscribed and look forward to other great content. Thank you from the UK
Well done! I was sold on the Pinion gearbox and purchased my bicycle before viewing this video and am very happy I make the decision to do so. That 3 gear model from 1936 is a remarkable achievement and such an advancement for it's day. Outstanding! While the derailleur drive-train is time tested and less money, it just doesn't have all the advantages of a sealed system. It seems to be a durable and if you will, a bulletproof system that is a huge leap forward. In my humble opinion, the increase in weight and cost are justified for those wanting "THE BEST",
Nice work on this in-depth tour of Pinion! Very enlightening. You guys keep upping the video quality and the fact that you both tour extensively and use the product adds to the authenticity.
Thanks for this detailed visit. Love seeing where my P.18 was born! For what its worth, my local shop recommended doing the first oil change at 1k miles because, when new, there is a break in period that dirties the oil quicker. Then annual oil changes are sufficient.
Tristan & Belén, you guys are absolutely killing it 👏🏼 before watching this video I was sooooo excited to test the pinion gearbox next week with my wife..but now?! Holy crap I’m EXPLODING from excitement 😍 I cannot wait to get my hands on one! I thought the questions you asked Dirk were really important and informative, so thank you very much for the work that went into making these videos! When you asked Dirk about the process if something needs to be checked/fixed on the gearbox, it made me wonder how long the turn around time would be (approximately) if you had to send in the gearbox? 🤔 I have a feeling once I order my bike with the gearbox I’ll never go back to a derailleur 🙈
You definitely won't go back to a derailleur! I can say so myself after not even a year with this bike, and I'm starting to forget what derailleurs even are. As for the turnaround time, this will probably depend on each individual case but knowing Pinion, it should be pretty fast and professional.
Very impressed on the starting point of this company. Their production assembly line and process is definitely similar to that one of a car maker! Appreciate your effort to share this companies inside. Thanks team!
At 23:06. That vintage steel bicycle with the Pinion gearbox is stunning! Is this bike for sale? We've got to have more of these classics with Pinion gearboxes.
You’d have to email Pinion to find out! And agreed. To me, more classic bikes with Pinion gearboxes would be like seeing all the favorite classic cars turned electric!
This is over 2 years old and the pinion e-bike in the pic (Klever) with a gearless rear motor (the best setup for quiet cruising) still can’t be found in the USA. The only company that was making it, Stromer (out of Europe), was charging 10k+ and recently quit the USA.
I have been using a 18 gear Pinion gearbox on a Stevens P18 for the last 18 months. It is brilliant, quiet, silky smooth shifting reliable. It does what it says on the box. Change the oil annually, check the cables, job done. If Pinion need a test rider to put kms on a Pinion gearbox for testing please let me know? Live on the German Netherlands border, retired, fit and can ride every day.
Excellent choice, that's a similar setup as what Kamran (@kamranonbike) was using for a long time, between Patagonia and Alaska. Very inspiring ride and such a great setup for it. Well done on making yours last and speaking up about it!
Thank you for your video. Very interesting for me as bike mechanic. I do have a few questions I wonder if you know the answers to, which I don't find on the Pinion website. 1) Is the gear shift indexing done at the shifter or the gearbox? Gearbox would seem more reliable because it takes cable tension out of the equation. 2) Are the gear steps all really the same (eg, 17.7% for the 12-speed)? It seems this would be a hard arithmetic problem when multiplying the 4 gear ratios from stage 1 by the 3 ratios from stage 2. Even the most evenly spaced internally geared hubs from Shimano or Rohloff don't have the exact same steps throughout their range! If so, how did they achieve this? This may be a trade secret, or maybe just a tooth-counting exercise! Thank you.
I’ve just ordered a Riese and Müller Delight 5 with the 12 speed Pinion. Do you think they will make a range extender with a 250 watt hour battery to take the 800 watt hour just over the 1000.
Hi Tristan. Great video! My C1.12 Pinion gearbox has begun to develop a strange fault, in that it sometimes take a quarter of a pedal turn (or more, nearly half a turn) for the crank to engage with the gearbox. Any idea how to fix this? I'm based in the UK, with no Pinion service centre nearby... Quite separately, I've discovered that my H2r pinion rear hub leaks some of its grease, causing the freehub system to become noisy with time: it can be quietened with fresh grease, but then the grease slowly comes out again! Have you come across this, and would you know how to fix it? Thanks!
Hi Pierre, best would be to immediately contact the Pinion customer service. Let them know your situation and perhaps the warranty will cover it all. They’re quick and very helpful!
The P1.18 is such a great choice! In our case, we sided with the C1.12 to save a little bit of weight and as it has a 600% gear range, we thought it was plenty for the more MTB style riding we do nowadays, as opposed to long term road touring!
Interesting video, looks like a good and reliable system. You're right it is an investment, but it will serve you many years. I have several bicycles with a Rohloff speedhub and the oldest is 16 years old and still working fine. I use it now as a training bike and I also have a travel bike with Rohloff. Bedankt Belén and Tristan.
Hi. I will be purchasing a Comotion bicycle with Pinion P1.18 gearbox for bicycle touring. Will the gears in the gearbox hold up for about 400 pounds (181kg) weight of the rider, gear & bicycle?
that's for sure: my next bike will have a Pinion "e" MGU. Thanks for sharing the details of its fabrication - and also, please keep it Made in Germany :-)
Incredible and timely. Let's just hope it's more reliable than the Porsche PDK. :) What is the timeline for rolling this tech out to mainstream E-MTB companies? And how does the cost compare?
It was great to see the factory and assembly process. One thing I found with my PInion is that the company would not disclose what type of oil they were using. So I sent my oil in for testing and found it was 75-80w. This type of oil can be purchased cheaply from any auto parts store and does not need to come from Pinion directly. I have a few short films comming out on my channel about this process.
this would be a perfect IGH if it had a trigger shifter. grip shifter is ok for casual/light riding but cumbersome in cold/hot/bad weather/fast riding scenario where the rider will have to pay extra attention to grip/steering. overall trigger shifter will be most convenient/desire. if the future enhancement/design include a trigger shifter, I will try it. until than, I am happy with Alfine.
It happened 3 days ago at eurobike with the E1! Also thought about that for years after I make a first ride on the P18 about 12 years ago in Friedrichshafen
That's fine! It was more as if Pinion chose us, since the Tout Terrain Outback comes with a Pinion gearbox only. But also, the idea of a rear wheel hub freaks me out a bit, considering swapping wheels or having to do spoke repairs is made significantly more challenging. The Pinion gearbox is easily dismounted in case of problems, and my rear wheel is free of clutter. I love it!
Bedankt voor deze video. Ik ga een nieuw avontuur in mijn professioneel leven beginnen als verkoper van bv Stromer fietsen dit uitgerust zijn met Pinion systemen.

Problem is it does not fit into an open eco system and requires frame design to house it. That limits the choice of frames - material, geometry, etc. One cannot upgrade an existing frame to use Pinion.
theoretically its not that more expencive to massproduce a pinion gearbox compared to a derailure and cassette? I dont see why this couldnt be the new standard if it is working flawlessly as they say. Especially if they can get the electronic gearling to shift smoothly under load.
Now to if we can get pinion to reduce the price of the bracket to bike frames!!! No reason to change $1000 just for a frame!!! What is the 'best' chainring and back cog to use with the gearbox?!?
Mmm nice video but…. What if…. And then you wait… two three four or ??? You have to send your gearbox to the fabric and you are in Kyrgyzstan your journey is over. Or at least for a month. That’s how long it takes before you get your gearbox back. I think the Pinion and the Rohloff systems are the best but only in Europe and the states. If going to Azië I prefer my old cassette and bring some spare parts. It is a gamble that you take that can cost you a hell of a time. And if you have to stay somewhere for a month you will end in a hotel and all the costs that will bring it. Okay maybe I see some bears on the road but you have to keep that in mind. They also say the Titanic could not sink. 😅

Can they repair a used pinion that is out of warranty? After watching the video it seems like a bad idea to buy a used pinion bike.
They need to add a trigger shifter + continuous pedaling while shifting before I consider adding the 3-4% efficiency loss to my drivetrain.
