Thank you whoever recorded this moment! I did not have the energy left to stay up until 2AM that night, and so I missed the big moment, but to see Richard, normally a stoic understated man, erupt with such joy, it's really touching. I wish I had been there in person, but this was almost as good.
You have to watch from the beginning. It makes the reaction around 3:01 or so so much sweeter. Much love to everybody involved! Love is what it's all about!
Wow. I'm so amazed this moment was captured. I tried describing it several times today and couldn't get through it because of my tears. I can't watch it without crying. Incredible.
When this happened in that room, the entire room broke out in pandemonium. Thanks Dale for posting this on UA-cam. I hope we can find more videos, because I'll never forget the emotion we all went through!!
I find myself cueing up 2:48 in this vid over & over, just to hear Carlbom's #MNUnited victory yell. Thank you for posting it, Dale Carpenter. #marriageequality
Hello! I was the AP bureau chief in Minnesota that night and I was the one (with a team of people helping me) who made the call that the measure would be defeated. I was just rememembering that night and wondered if this video was still out there on the internet. Glad to see it is.
Thank you so much, Michelle. It was my husband who filmed this on his phone as I was sitting next to him. As someone who never thought we’d win, I can’t tell you how much surprise and joy that moment brought us.
This video brought tears to my eyes! I hope that one day the whole nation can celebrate like this!!!! Great Video!! Happy for the people of Minnesota!!
You don't know how many people I have brought to tears when they see this video, (including myself, many times!) You ran the perfect campaign, Richard, and I'm proud to be one of those 27,000 volunteers who helped make that happen.
While I wish I could have been there, but I'm so glad I could be a part of this beautiful, wonderful event in MN's history. Still a ways to go, but it's only a matter of time until all of us in this world can be recognized as married regardless of whom we love!
You are all amazing for putting in such a gigantic effort in the face of hatred and discrimination. YOU MADE HISTORY !!!! I was really touched by this and tears welled in my eyes. Amazing...just amazing. Big love coming to you from Australia :)
I've already commented on this before but I'm feeling drawn back to it. Its just the most amazing video I've seen in a while. Its so simple yet so powerful. Tearing up just typing my thoughts. That moment at 3:03 when he throws his hands up is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. That is one of those moments that should be replayed time and time again to remind us just how much this fight really does mean to us. A historical moment for sure.... for sure.
This is an amazing video. I wanted to be there so bad, but I was so exhausted. What an amazing place to be when we said NO to discrimination! Love this video so much!
I am so glad that marriage is now the law in Minnesota, and now with the Supreme Court striking down DOMA you now have federal benefits as well. I am soooo proud of Minnesota!
This made me cry the first time I saw it and then another friend linked to it and I watched it again and I cried again. Future. Justice. A better world. Standing on the side of love.
Absolutely love this. Happy tears in my eyes for my friends and family who were not told on Tuesday that they are beneath others. Now let's just get a bill going to legalize!
Not only glad over the outcome, but that I can come to UA-cam, and see GOOD SUPPORTIVE COMMENTS!! When the hell is that possible?! hahaha..So happy to see the ushering in of an era of HAPPY OPEN MINDED PEOPLE!! What's sad is that it took THIS long to happen
2:57 - That's got to be the highest celebratory scream I've heard from a man Anyway, Congrats Minnesota. Big props to shooting down of NOM's arguments of never winning at the ballot box. We just proved them wrong.
I'm so proud of the state of Minnesota. No event in my life has made me more proud to be a Minnesotan. We were the first state to vote down a constitutional amendment that would have banned same-sex marriage and we said no to Voter ID! Minnesota stood for equal rights on November 6th, 2012 and hopefully changed the story.
Had to come back and watch this again. So good. Notice how the troll's comments cannot be found but the comments of many people taking them on are still here... Another reason to not engage with trolls... They rely on the knee jerk reactions of lots of people, otherwise they are too small in number to have an impact. Just report the comments and step away.
The campaign party was held at a convention center. We had rented the place from 8pm-2AM. We didn't expect to stay past 2am. So at this moment of the video, we are being told that a speech would be made to thank all the supporters for coming to the party, but that we would have to wait until the next day to figure out what happened. However, The (AP) Associated Press and their staffers looking at election results, called the race for us. Than happiness occurred! Thank YOU MN for Voting NO!!
I'm from California, and I'm extremely happy to see that 4 years later, a similar initiative to Prop 8 was rejected. It may not have been a victory in my state, but it definitely felt like a victory :')
That does not take away the fact that US law should treat people equally. Distinguishing between the ability to have children or not is clearly against that, thus unconstitutional. People get married and get benefits, not matter if they will have children or not.
Haha. Impressive how you still failed to perceive my facetiousness on that reply, when I literally spelled it out. And yet again, you went out of your way to insult me in similar fashion. Bravo!
25 years after Rose Nylund of St Olaf, Minnesota declared her support for gay people on national TV the state of Minnesota finally caught up ! CONGRATULATIONS Minnesota for standing up to hate and bigotry ! Rose Nylund is very proud today !
Shh.Cease, brethren.Peace,be still. You are hurting. I don't know why, but you are. I am sorry that you are hurting. I do not know what it is to be in your mind and heart and soul right now, but I remember hurting so much that I wanted to pour it all out and make others hurt as well. It will pass.Despite what you may have been told, you do not have to be a monster. You do not have to stand in coldness of shadows, screaming your pain. When you are ready, there is still a place at the table for you.
I'd like to apologize for my two previous comments. They're useless. I have a bit of ole "fire water" in me and it took me just a extra minute to realize that you're one of those people that no matter how much sense and logic and empathy that someone can show and talk with, will never get through to you and the best thing anyone can do with people like you, is ignore you and let you fade into obscurity.
I was NOT expecting that at @3:03, but damn, did that make me laugh! :) So happy for the people of the US... I just hope my country will make progress soon.
You have no idea if that would come to pass. For someone that purports to being informed and intelligent, speaking in absolutes is unbecoming of that persona. I will suggest the following. If this is truly such a ordeal, a disaster waiting to happen, you should be out there volunteering and advocating against this and NOT wasting your time with people you've made clear, you consider to be lesser than you. Really. Lead by example. It's what the people in the vid had the courage to do. Do you?
Yeah, but you'll notice he doesn't say that it is required that the children be the result of the sexual union between the two parents in order for there to be a legal institution... only that the production of children from sexual relations requires it. In fact, Bertrand Russell seems to be saying that it's *straight* couples that need to be controlled and restricted, not gay ones, since it's only the straight couples that even have the potential to be irresponsible with their child-producing!
Equal right under equal circumstances. Single? Then you don't have the same circumstance you have when married and don't have the same benefits, no matter who you are. Married? Then you don't have the same circumstance you have when single and don't have the same benefits. The state of being married is determined not if you can have children or not. Besides, the Supreme Courts already sided FOR gay marriage, so no matter what you say, you are wrong.
What's even more sad is they weren't even awarded civil equality here - they prevented a law that would limit civil equality even further. But, it is progress...
this was how i felt about this too. on facebook wednesday morning, so many of my friends were so happy about the amendment not being passed, but all i could think was "I can't believe it was that close... I can't believe so many people still voted yes for this. Almost 50% of Minnesotans still don't think gays should have equal rights." in 2012? really? we have to fight this hard and this long and still JUST BARELY win? it's absurd. i think the closeness saddens me more than the win excites me.
You haven't answered the question. If marriage is all about children in the eyes of the state, then why does the state not require people to have children? Why are people with children allowed to get divorced? Why are women past the age of menopause allowed to get married? (Hint: It's your premise that's wrong. Marriage isn't just about children no matter how much you want it to be.)
I'm so happy for ya'll!!! I teared up watching this. Now imagine how we'll feel here in California when Prop H8 is declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court!!! Hope you all will celebrate with us as we celebrate your victory with you!
What does the middle ages have to do with the discrimination experienced by lgbt people in our current society? if a whole group of people is being discriminated against because of something they can't control, they deserve equality. What don't you understand or agree with?
I understand. I truly do. I've advocated for gay rights for years, and if I'd been in that room having helped call all those people and knock on all those doors, I would've been just as joyous. But, from another angle, I'm kind of gobsmacked that in 21st century America, such joy is taken in keeping hate and bigotry out of a state's constitution - that is, that we need to make extreme efforts to keep that from happening. What the hell is wrong with so many people that they have that much hate?
...presenting your own, which in itself is quite self-defeating. If homosexuality occurs with a frequency of less than 2 % in the population (as you stated) what's the big deal here? What's the fear and worry about the possible lack of conception, of giving back to the state? Less than 2%! This is quite worrying indeed. It sounds like the end of the world.
Tricking the system maybe hard, but I'd never underestimate the tenacity of a closeted gay man who can find a pair of doggie sunglasses in Minnesota's 6th district.
"Marriage regulates procreation"? What does that mean? Procreation can occur in a variety of ways today. That variety increases every year. Soon, anyone who wants to have a kid will just order one. Marriage is about two people who want to form a union. If two wounded (possibly infertile) veterans return from war with a desire to marry, because they love one another & want to share the benefits granted to married couples, what does the combination *or* the functionality of their genitals matter?
A federal campaign would be too hard to win. Going state by state, changing opinions at the base is the way to go about it. Plus, it delivers more rage over a longer period of time from bigots.
"So what? So is left-handedness. Shall we make left-handedness a protected class under the Constitution too?" left-handed people aren't discriminated against. lol
Being able to hide your sexual orientation isn't necessarily a positive thing. People shouldn't have to hide it, they should be allowed to love whoever they want to. And what about the people who are very *obviously* gay? Butch lesbians and flamboyant gay men are basically wearing their sexuality on their sleeve.
This is easily one of my favorite videos of all time.

Almost 7 years later and this beautiful moment still brings tears to my eyes♥️

Almost nine years later and for some reason, this moment popped into my head this morning. And I'm so glad it did.
You don't know how many people I have brought to tears when they see this video, (including myself, many times!) You ran the perfect campaign, Richard, and I'm proud to be one of those 27,000 volunteers who helped make that happen.

Pure effing joy.
This makes me cry every time I see it. Love in Action, that's what this is.
You are all amazing for putting in such a gigantic effort in the face of hatred and discrimination. YOU MADE HISTORY !!!! I was really touched by this and tears welled in my eyes. Amazing...just amazing. Big love coming to you from Australia :)

Congratulations from Michigan. This is huge. So proud of you all.
Congratulations, and thank you! We have a long way to go here in Texas, but someday we will all have equality. Inspiring!
Congratulations! Y'all have shown what civilized really is; loving people as they are. Well done!
This makes me cry and laugh everytime I see it. Richard is fabulous and the energy in the room was amazing!

OMG! Tears! Wonderful and amazing moment! Seriously.... tears!
The joy is overwhelming. Such love! :)
I come to this video every time it's hard to believe people are decent. That's pretty common these days. Thank you for this.

3:03 - The audible incarnation of pure, unrestrained, spontaneous joy.
I can't express how amazing this is! Tears welled in my eyes... what a great victory. Absolutely beautiful.
beautiful :) I made 120 of those calls. Cried just watching this!
i can't stop crying this is so wonderful i just wish this could happen worldwide
I didn't think I would but I shed a tear when the good news came in. The tide is turning. Woo!
Tear to my eye. Amazing!
Coming back to work at 10 AM? "NO! NO! NO!"
So glad y'all got to sleep in :D
Thumbs up if you watched this because you like to see people happy.

CRYING AGAIN. THANK YOU MN
I would love to have seen the folks on the other side when it was announced that they lost. Congratulations.

3:11 What happened? Can't celebrate AND do camerawork?
Yeah! this was an amazing election year. Extremely excited for everything that went down in the name of HUMAN rights
3:16 Is this what a hug is like? Have I finally experienced one?
pure glory
"We have called 900,000 fucking people!"
Quote of the day.
Not even awarded civil rights, their discrimination just won't be written into the MN constitution.
When Prop H8 goes to the SCOTUS... that's the groundswell that I'm waiting for. That should be the moment when marriage equality sweeps the nation.
I'm crying. Marriage is wonderful.
Yay, Minnesota!
It's always great news when bigots fail and lose.
Great job, folks, from the hopeless, backwards midwest. I'm proud of you.
I'm so happy for ya'll!!! I teared up watching this. Now imagine how we'll feel here in California when Prop H8 is declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court!!! Hope you all will celebrate with us as we celebrate your victory with you!

Thumbs up if at 3:03 you wanted to raise the roof too!
Why do they have to kick people out? They obviously want to stay.
That was beautiful. Please pass the tissues... =*)
btw, 3:00 mark is probably what you're looking for.
And some people pretend that UA-cam comments are a viable medium for political discourse.
you should see a doctor about that.
