Even though it is pricey - it is about $6-8k cheaper than putting a diesel and leather in the Ram 1500 or Ford F-150. You might get a slightly cheaper trim at Chevy, but there is no comparison in price when you look at the complete package. Needless to say, my AT4 is on order...

Selective rear locker is ok for off roading if your willing to turn it off and on when making sharp turns so your not dragging your rear end but the automatic locking rear is better when your not expecting slipping in every day situations.

I hate to say it, but I kind of like the setup Toyota uses on their vehicles with locking diffs. My 4Runner has a selectable locking rear diff, but it also has traction control (ATRAC). If I get into a situation where a rear wheel starts slipping, it will apply the brakes to that wheel and send power to the other. I tried it a few times, it actually is effective. If that fails, then it's easy to hit the button and turn on the rear Locker.
The ATRAC also works on the front wheels, which is kind of like having a limited slip in the front.
Or on the first generation Jeep Rubicon, I believe it's axles were limited slip, and then you could lock them up as well. Best of both worlds there.

Were I looking for a new half-ton 4WD pickup (I'm not), the GMC AT4 with the diesel would be about #1 on my list. The two biggest downers: the ridiculously high price (true of all new pickups these days) and the stupid design belt-driven oil pump (the belt requiring a labor-intensive replacement at 150K miles). Instead of all the blather about electronic locking vs. limited slip differentials (I have lots of experience with both on my 4WD vehicles), here is the SOLUTION: install a Detroit Locker in the rear--it stays locked all the time except for turning corners. It's always there when you need it and is bulletproof (I have one that has given zero issues in 13 years in a 4WD). Then, install a Detroit Truetrac differential in the front axle. Another bulletproof design. Neither the Detroit Locker nor Torsen are outrageously expensive, and they both are more effective than the factory offerings. Problem solved.

I've put 10k on my AT4 since September. It's a great blend of on road comfort and off road capability. The Diesel is quiet and very responsive....and gets good economy especially when filling up at Costco for $2.10 per gallon. Love it. Does great in snow and slush as well...but I put Michelin LTX's on. Love them as well. Had Duratracs on my old All Terrain and didn't care for the dry road performance.

When I bought my AT4 I was convinced I wanted the 6.2. After adding a set of 34s, its noticeably slower which is to be expected. While it was in the tire shop I took my friends 3.0 Duramax for a spin. I quite like the power delivery of the diesel compared to the 6.2. In the next year or so, I’ll likely trade into the diesel. It’s power delivery is perfect for moving a heavy vehicle through traffic.

2:30 Although the Goodyear Duratrac tires are not winter tires, they do have the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. According to TireRack.com that symbol means it is "severe snow service" rated. From TireRack.com:
"A three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol branded on a tire's sidewall indicates the tire meets required performance criteria in snow testing to be considered severe snow service-rated. Originally used as a designation for winter tires, the 3PMSF symbol is now featured on some all-season and all-terrain tires with snow performance that meets the testing criteria."

Regarding the video's comments around 9 min for putting bigger tires on-good luck going much bigger on the AT4-even with its 'factory 2 in lift'! I have a 2017 All Terrain, put 2.5 inch Fox front coil overs in and Fox rear shocks and upgraded the tires to 34 in Falken Wildpeaks, and get front rubbing when I crank down hard to the drivers side. I could probably take out the wheel well insert on that side, but I just ignore it-its not leaving marks on the insert or the tire. With the even more square wheel wells on the AT4, you'd probably have to do some cutting/trimming for bigger tires or get a bigger lift I guess-but I still think the shape of the wheel wells is problematic to size up to a bigger tire. Would love to upgrade to a diesel, but got a heck of a deal on mine as an end of the year factory close out. Would go with a diesel SLT though and put on the suspension and wheels/tires I want-think the cost would come out about the same as the AT4 w/ a upgrades better than spacers/Rancho shocks/decent tires on factory wheels.

The look of this truck is really growing on me, I like it better than the Silverado. I just wish the GM would make a truck with radiused wheel wells. Tires are round, yet GM loves their square or trapezoidal shaped wheel wells. A rounded off wheel well would probably allow for a 35 on this truck, and there's no reason one shouldn't be able to run a tire that big on a truck this big.

You should start in 2 wheel drive traction control on off, then switch to 4 high traction control on off, then switch to 4 low track control on off, and diff lock if that's an option on and off. I know it would make the videos quite a bit longer but it would be very informational, and cool to see the capability of each vehicle in each mode 😉🙃🙂

The trade contractor, owner operator are the customers that can take full advantage of these types of diesels, not high end trucks buyers which for the most part use these trucks as a commuter vehicle and for 5% of it's use pull a trailer on the odd weekend. Funny situation with the Duratrac on the AT4 and Trailboss. They don't have the snow flake rating on the tire. But if I used my GM parts catalog and look up the tire PN, as soon as I plug that # into the tire manufacturer website, it says they are snowflake rated.
My guess, Goodyear charges for the rating. GM didn't want to pay for it.

@@loganholmberg2295 I live in the Rocky Mountain region, and trail clearance is a big issue for full-size rigs. Probably half the 4WD trails in the region can not be safely negotiated with a full size 4WD (though people often try it with sometimes unpleasant results). That said, people here often need full-size 4WD's to carry heavy loads into backcountry work sites, etc. That's me, so I have both--a smaller 4WD for hardcore 4-wheeling and a full-size 4WD pickup for the heavy load hauling. That's actually pretty common around where I live. Sometimes a single vehicle just can't meet someone's needs.

Shit you can get those so kitted out nowadays I think I'd rather have those than a jeep.

There are people that would use this offroad truck for offroad work. If you think about where your food comes from farmers need offroad capable trucks that can also haul stuff for fencing, etc. There are others also that will need a full size offroad truck like cattle haulers, fishermen that pull a bigger boat need it if they fish away from the crowds. There is many uses for an offroad vehicle other than playing on a trail.

A GM dealer told me that GM does not put the 3.0L diesel option in the Chevy Custom or LT Trail Boss because it would pirate half-ton diesel sales from the GMC division. There are still a number of GMC dealers that are not Chevy/GMC multiple line dealers, and GM wanted to protect their single-line GMC dealers from internal competition from Chevrolet dealers.
