    Karo's book "Judo for Mixed Martial Arts" is a gem. I still use it as a reference before and after class. It's body of techniques are well rounded and the no-gi grips are highlighted.

    The big difference with Karo and others is Hayastan. They routinely did judo/sambo "without" the gi. They master control ties along with their regular gripping. Not "occasionally" but routinely. That's rare in judo circles. The main reason for Ronda's success with throws, along with JFlo. . Also, Karo was fighting grown men in underground MMA events in Mexico when he was in his early/mid teens. So, he had to learn to adapt fast. Most judokas who go into MMA haven't had the same amount of time learning control times, so they find wrestling more efficient. I've watched 95% of every major MMA event since the mid 90s, and you always find traditionla judo takedowns in every event. Just last night in PFL. 2 female judokas fought. Many MMA fighters have judo beginnings. It's just not emphasized . Great work, Chadi! Again.

    The current UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has very solid judo, in several fights he uses techniques such as Harai Goshi, Ashi Harai, Sasae Tsurikomi ashi... He says that wrestling throwing techniques are great, but judo techniques They are better because they consume less energy.

    Try reaching out to the Jaxxon podcast team maybe they'd be willing to give you a line to Karo if you tell them you'd like to get into a technical overview of his career, maybe link your channel to really show what your about.

    If you want another phenomenal grappler in MMA (albeit Sambo, but that's fairly close to Judo) there's a criminally underrated female fighter named Sakoto Shinashi that I'd love to see you do a break down of. She actually did a Sambo match against former #1 women's MMA fighter Megumi Fujii and beat her.

    I just did a seminar with Justin Florez last night and it was one of the best experiences at a seminar I’ve ever had. Super jealous of people so get to train with him on the regular. A true judoka!
    Interestingly, I asked him about finishing Sumi Gaeshi, without a gi l, as a counter to a single leg, and without using the ude Garami grip, and he recommended taking a near Overhook (a wizzer) and then reaching down and gripping the wrist that uke would use to post with in order to stuff the throw.

      @@gcoffey223 Dude, the dagestanis are the quintessential wall wrestlers. Their approach is to bulldoze people against the fence, drag them down and smash them with superb top control. I'm talking about hip throws and foot sweeps in the middle of the cage, clinching for upper-body takedowns and not just for wall control.

    Yes Parisyan was good but he ALSO know wrestling. As in hayatan wrestling which combine catch wrestling, freestyle wrestling ( evolved from catch wrestling), Greco Roman wrestling ( which gave us the suplex which later went into freestyle wrestling, catch wrestling, and even judo), bjj, etc. While judo is a form of JACKET WRESTLING what more beneficial for MMA is wrestling like catch wrestling and freestyle wrestling. Heck even Laetitia Blot of France BEFORE MMA career trained AND competed in judo, freestyle wrestling, and sambo. When she went into MMA she did train in bjj and, later on, Luta Livre ( mixture of catch wrestling and judo).

    Even with how well Karo did in the octagon, the power of Judo is still massively underrated. Why? Because the floor in the octagon is sprung. It's bouncy. You can fall hard on it and take very little damage. And of course that's good for the safety of the athletes. We don't want to see people cracking their skulls open on concrete floors. But imagine if Karo did those same throws to guys on a normal surface, like concrete, wood floors, stone tiles, asphalt, hard dirt. There's knockout potential. Even without a knockout, it's brutal to take 2 or 3 hard throws. It's going to take the wind right out of your sails.
    I'm incredibly excited to see what Kayla Harrison does in the UFC with her gold medal Olympic Judo skillset and mindset.

    I loved watching Karo. He showed that Judo could work in a "real fight" and that there were still plenty of techniques were available without the Gi. BJJ was all the rage at the time, but now many of the top Pros realize that Judo is much better in terms of takedown game and its efficiency in delivering power. BJJ is now a bit of afterthought for many MMA fighters while they all know at least a few "hip throws" of some kind.

    • @vids595
      @vids595 3 місяці тому +1

      Bjj is far from an afterthought in mma, that's silly. No one who is serious about training for mma neglects bjj practice. Those hip thorws are part of bjj. Most fans prefer to see striking, and the promotion knows this so strikers are more heavily promoted.
