Also don't know why he couldn't set the cruise control, which is adaptive anyway. EV's can be a little more annoying with the 1 pedal driving if you are trying to manually sustain speed.
Surprised they didn't before. Our Ioniq 5 uses switches on the steering wheel to go from L0 (endless coasting) to L1-L3 each with increasing regen, or Ipedal for 1 pedal drive mode that will make a full stop if you keep your foot off the pedal long enough.
My GF in high school back in the early 80's parents had a 77 Rabbit. We had much fun with that car to include washing it and once, when I was a senior I visited her high school during lunch and when I sat down with her and her friends she said "Oh, the Rabbit died" meaning the VW but everyone else thought the older meaning! Took several months for those rumors to die down! Great competition, thank you guys.
Owning the diesel as well, I can tell you that it’s the superior ice cream run vehicle, particularly if you’re on the highway. Congrats to Griot for the restomod VW Wabbit. 1:00:02
A few corrections.... -There are indeed mobile fast charging roadside assistance trucks. -traffic jams shouldn't actually worry you. EVs Excel in traffic jams and use barely any energy while stuck -regeneration in just EVs can be completely disabled and in some can be varied to custom preference levels, including coast. -
On your corrections: -Mobile roadside charging is neither common or available in all markets. - Todd expresses how traffic would have made him more nervous, personally. He doesn’t comment about how it would effect power usage. - The Lucid we had did not have any way to turn regen off or down any further than the “smooth” mode discussed here (though Lucid has apparently rolled out an update since our loan). Thanks for watching.
My first car was a 1983 rabbit 4spd gas. Never needed the tach. My 16 year old brain used sound to know when to shift. That car was bomb proof. Bought it with nearly 400k km. Great car
You’ve tested them more than anyone! But Todd has said for years that “range anxiety” is the wrong concern, “charge anxiety” is more real. 50 mile range could be acceptable if it was chargeable in a minute or so on every corner. Thanks for watching!
My dad and I test drove a rabbit diesel, when they were new. He tapped on my leg, many times during the ride. After the dealership, he told me, whenever he did that, he had the pedal to the floor.
Watching this video as I put together a bookshelf I got my daughter for Christmas. I actually guessed the Hyundai would win, but all the vehicles had super impressive mileage. Thanks for the wonderful video!
First car to fill up is probably the camera car. 😂 Edit: Just noticed there was a huge crack in the Lucid’s glass. How much would it cost to replace that??
Freaked me out. Google says $1500 plus labor; about 2x the cost of a normal replacement. Might be under warranty though, as Lucid is really good about that.
@mikecronis Honda chargers like ~1200 because of the front active safety camera. Most OEMs have service learn procedures where you just drive and the camera recalibrate on its own. Honda stupid camera requires bunch of targets and a giant ordeal to set up to recalibrate.
We have an Ioniq 5 and yes more range is nice but 95% of the time it makes no difference. We charge it home as needed and never need to stop for daily driving. We do take it on trips a few times per year but even then charging stops have been as short as 6 minutes with most 12-20, or as long as it takes to into a Walmart or Starbucks use the bathroom and get something for lunch.
We own a VW Passat Station Wagon 2002 1.8T gasoline engine. Yes, VW is fun. However for us the noise, vibration, comfort does matter. That is the oldest in memory line car we can accept in a "classic car". It has air bags, abs brakes, cruise control, less vibration than Diesel, does have a proper stearing, not a light one like Rabit from 1970ties. Plus the Station wagon has 5 doors, practicality, no Diesel fumes smell.
So much fun to watch! Thank you. Great conclusion to a fantastic Christmas. You guys have the best videos and podcast in the market. Looking forward to 2025 and all your new content.
Learned how to drive in a MK 1 Golf/Rabbit...one of the first PA built ones. Gasser with an automatic and air conditioning....did my first autocross in it....was watching the event and the organizers gave me a tutorial about the course and coached me on my first run...Very fun...but not terribly fast. Like the clean lines of the Restomod in the video.
I've done two Seattle to Los Alamos NM trips with my kid in his Scion iA (Mazda2) and there is a very definite bonus to lightness. The little Mazda has exceptional steering and handling dynamics vs my Mazda6. It's was a total joy to drive thru the Redwoods and up to Grants Pass on the twisties. In "fun to drive" I put it's competence above the IROC-Z, 5spd and Lincoln LS, manual that I have both owned. Just a very eager competence that really gives the driver confidence.
What a fun Christmas present to get to watch after a full day of food and family! Thanks, guys! Todd, I hope you enjoyed Christmas in your Nakatomi Plaza T, maybe even listening to the “John, the Christmas Hero” song I sent to the show’s email. Happy Holidays, everyone!
My C4 Vette could go 500+ miles on a tank at 80+ mph. C5 was slightly more efficient, but held a couple less gallons, so it ‘bout evens out. Great hatch space too!
Hi, from Japan!! If I were a young boy, I would never be interested in the old Rabbit and I would love the other new two cars. However, now I can understand how the Rabbit looks cool.
The longest range car I’ve owned so far was a 2013 Mazda 3 hatch. With highway driving she’d easily get over 500. (39mpg average over the 110,000 miles I put on it) The restraint to not add features to the Golf is impressive.
Maybe we should have gotten a Sonata. We drove a Model 3 LR and a Camry Hybrid and we just liked the Camry more (apart from the Tesla acceleration), and given it's 48mpg rating I figured it wouldn't cost much more in fuel than the Tesla. Exceeeept...were getting like 38mpg driving more gingerly than usual. If you drive like a normal person keeping up with traffic it gets 35-36mpg in the city. I talked to the dealer and called Toyota and checked on the Forums and apart from accusations about not knowing how to drive most people think it seems pretty bad, but without a service engine light they think there is nothing they can do. I took it for one drive where I drove as obnoxiously slow as possible taking a minute to get to 60, coasting where I could and doing very long slow downs. I achieved an eco score of 97, and...that resulted in 42mpg. Apart from costing about $500 a year more in fuel than they said it would we like the car...but still pretty pissed how far off the EPA figures are, esp now compared to the Sonata.
My first car ever was a 1986 Chevy spectrum , i took it to my dads base and weighed it once its weighed 1546 pounds… wow… It was fun to drive but let me say this, I would honestly gladly take newer safer heavier cars for the safety and fatigue factors. I need to remind you how scary these cars are when youre attempting to avoid an accident or even get in an accident… it … was… so … scary… please don’t forget how far the safety part has come oh dear god 😅😳 please don’t let nostalgia let you all us all, forget what a car accident in old car was like… literally fractured a tibia 🦴 from a 25 mile an hour fender bender in a different 88 Honda accord .. a fender bender yall… In 2019 I had the misfortune of flipping a 2015 bmw… at 65 miles an hour into a wall… walked away from it with a sprained ankle that heals in a few weeks. Nostalgia 😅
I bought my dad’s diesel Rabbit off him while I was in college about ‘84 made a few more bucks and bought a second gen Scirocco. Did about 48 miles to the gallon.
You really get a sense of just how different the Lucid is from the other two. The insane lack of interior noise is ridiculous (that's luxury EV for you). Actually speaking of the Lucid, I do have to ask a genuine question: Is that a vertical crack in the glass?
Yes. It is a press car and the windshield was cracked when we started with it. Glad the differences between the cars was apparent. Thanks for watching!
Folks driving past the Lucid on the left, glancing at the blue tape over the charge flap thinking,$100k + vehicle and the flap is already broken😢. The other two have the lid tape on the RHS.
Thanks for such a long and cool video!! Not to sound like Mr boring. But Todd please remember to adjust the headrest in cars with your height.. in the Hyundai 😵Take it from a 6.3 guy who's neck got demolished.
Just picked up a Range Rover Classic from Griots Motors, would highly recommend working with them. The car was exactly as presented and the buying and shipping process was very smooth!
I have a Model Y Performance. The issue with EVs is they use regen off throttle vs on brakes like hybrids. It makes for a very very jerky experience, and different settings help and so does feathering the throttle, but 99% of uber drivers driving Teslas cant master it and its super nauseating. They need to move regen to braking and let off throttle simply coast (or give us a mode that does that)
Guys that is really cool. But I need a cargo van that can do something close to this for my millwork business and that’s the big issue for me is still range. The manufacturers seem to have conquered the range issue with cars but not for utility vans.
I owned a 2015 Chevy Cruze diesel and it was capable of over 750 miles on a tank if you kept the speed below 65 mph. I sold it for a Corolla hybrid as the price of diesel where I live has consistently been over 50 cents a gallon higher than regular, post pandemic. The Corolla cut my monthly fuel bill in half and doesn't have an mpg penalty on my commute vs long trips like the diesel did.
I'd like to see you guys test.Drive the new sonata n line. And last body Sonata and line. Is better yet want to test? All the original sonatas that were sold in our country and test all of them against each.
I have a '22 VW Jetta Sport with one of the last manuals; '24 was the last year for the manual. It could have made the trip. It'll say 490 miles of range on fill up, without using the "eco" button. Just a plain ICE engine; 1.5T & a 6-speed. It would have loved some ICE cream at Tillamook.
Highest range normal vehicle that I know of is the early 2000’s VW Passat TDI’s wagons. They get around 900-1,000 miles per tank. The Rabbit is nice but the 1998-2003 1.9 ALH TDI engine VW was by far the best pre emissions diesel engine. My 2013 VW Passat TDI would also get around 50 mpg highway, which was nice for such a large vehicle. If it didn’t have the emissions equipment on it, it probably would get mid to upper 50’s mpg.
How many miles did the rabbit do? I had an 04 diesel golf and id moved from Chicago to Colorado while in Nebraska I had the car loaded to the fills and was still averaging 55 mpg. My ex was driving her 1.8t Passat and had to stop over twice as often for gas. I had to stop to empty my bladder more than getting fuel.
You need to make Richard Griot a recurring guest! He’s a super nice guy and a genuine car nut. BTW, cool comparo. I always loved the Rabbit. They were new in the showroom when I bought my new 79 Beetle. BTWW, I have been onboard with your thinking that hybrid is the sweet spot.
I would have used a 1999-2003 VW Jetta TDI. You could get over 700 miles on the Jetta TDI. Some like the Passat wagon, it has a bigger tank some get 900-1,000 miles on that.
Great content, as always! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
My first car was a VW rabbit. I regularly got 44 mpg (imperial) / 36 mpg (US) but only if the spark plugs were fresh... because leaded gas back then. That works out to 513 miles range. I think it's possible to do better on an early Honda Civic.
I guess one big test is that if you're hit by a RAM 1500, they'd have to hose you out of the Rabbit, where you'll probably survive in the modern cars. Don't forget that old cars pre-airbags are rubbish for crash safety. Fine for weekend hobby driving. If it's your daily, statistically you're on a losing bet.
I have actually seen road side assistance that brings a generator to charge you up to reach the next available fast charger. Admit it.. you didn't charge the Lucid for dramatic effect. Not like the building doesn't have power and it stayed there overnight 😆
? - The challenge was to run without refueling or recharging. We didn’t fill the cars with gas or diesel after day 1, so we also didn’t recharge the Lucid. Thanks for watching
Merry Christmas guys! Great video. Love the Rabbit - in the name of progress it feels like we’ve lost a lot. Less is more. So I’ve gotta ask: track, daily, crush?
Next time try a old Mercedes turbo diesel. I would love to see how the Hyundai would compare to my 1987 300D when it's 38 years old with 760000 km on it. My Mercedes 300D consistently does Thunder Bay to Timmins (800 Km ) without the low fuel light coming on. Still using it for summer business trips because all my other cars fell apart at 250000 to 420000. Still use it because know other car match it's steering feel, comfort, torque, (no hill in Ontario it has to gear down for) ride, running costs, trunk space and reliability.
for whatever reason, having almost bought a golf diesel after dieselgate, i went to the ny auto show and saw the 2019 jetta with the new body style, having been impressed with the 2018 with its 1,4 turbo. also at the show was the honda hybrid and the new arteon. so, when my kia forte was making really bad noises i rushed to my vw dealer and bought a 2019 jetta, 8 speed auto 416500. 46 mpg from the phila suburbs to atlantic city and back.at 80mph with the air on. a couple years ago i got 55mpg on back roads, lenox mass. to williamstown, steady 55. i would bet that my car would have won your contest!
I live in the uk. I had a mk7 fiesta 1.6 diesel. I drove it like I stole it 90% of the time. It returned 70-80mpg. I’d rather have another than an electric thing
Two English guys drove a VW Passat 1.6 TDI blue motion from Morocco 🇲🇦 North Africa up through Spain 🇪🇸 and France 🇫🇷 to London England 🏴 about 1100 miles on one tank of diesel ⛽️ on UA-cam a few years ago!
There’s an extremely good reason Toyota stuck with hybrids , my wife Prius A which is a station wagon version uses 3.3-7 litres to the 100km , yeah it can easily do over 900km on a single tank which is small cause Japan 🇯🇵 😂
Lucid recent software update has a "coast" mode now, "Regen OFF". Lucid listens!
Also don't know why he couldn't set the cruise control, which is adaptive anyway. EV's can be a little more annoying with the 1 pedal driving if you are trying to manually sustain speed.

Still better than any EV 😂
Sonata looks really clean
With an EV, to me at least, it’s all about the charging performance and not so much about the range!
You’ve tested them more than anyone!
But Todd has said for years that “range anxiety” is the wrong concern, “charge anxiety” is more real. 50 mile range could be acceptable if it was chargeable in a minute or so on every corner. Thanks for watching!
Which often comes down to “ charger” performance and not always the vehicle itself. Just ask Tom Mologhney
It’s all about are you really that dumb that you would buy an EV?
Not choosing a Camry hybrid is a crime.
My dad and I test drove a rabbit diesel, when they were new. He tapped on my leg, many times during the ride. After the dealership, he told me, whenever he did that, he had the pedal to the floor.
Bet you wish you had bought one. They fetch big $$ these days.
Been waiting for this one!
Will watch with my dad once the family leaves from dinner. Be well all!
Excellent and fun video. If I had the money - I'd have a Lucid Air Pure and the Rabbit restomod. No thanks to the boring Hyundai.
Looks like Jordan is the master of the drone shots. I believe he is involved with Out of spec team as well.
Watching this video as I put together a bookshelf I got my daughter for Christmas. I actually guessed the Hyundai would win, but all the vehicles had super impressive mileage.

How would a crack in the windshield be under warranty? Are tires under warranty?
@@is6566 Most tires do come with a warranty, if not from Lucid they could be covered by Michelin or whoever makes the tire.
$12.98 = filling the Lucid with electricity in Tacoma (118 kwh x $.11 per kwh residential rate).
Thanks! Merry Christmas to the team!
Love the Rabbit build, what a great idea! Thanks for the Xmas video team, looking forward to 2025 content!

So much fun to watch! Thank you. Great conclusion to a fantastic Christmas. You guys have the best videos and podcast in the market. Looking forward to 2025 and all your new content.
Enormous crack in the Lucid windshield! Would that spread over into the glass roof or are they two separate pieces of glass?

I think the 2025 Camry would also slot right in to the Sonata hybrid great daily category. Of course they are direct competitors...
The rabbit, stock, was 16.8 seconds to 60, 1946 pounds, and got 35 on the highway.
A golf in England, Top Gear, did 78 MPG.
My C4 Vette could go 500+ miles on a tank at 80+ mph. C5 was slightly more efficient, but held a couple less gallons, so it ‘bout evens out. Great hatch space too!

Nice cars and video but I’d pick the Lincoln Lawyer Convertible.
I can't tell apart the new cars interior. Seriously I had to go back and forth to figure it out.
Is that windshield broken?
That crack in the Lucid windscreen was very annoying. I wonder how much it costs to replace? 😮😂
Got a Euro Ford Escape Diesel Manual Transmission 550 miles of range on a 60 liter tank, Diesel is King 👑
PS, i also owned a '77 rabbit, great car, 1.6 4 speed and would do 104 mph.
That McLaren MP4/6 would get you to the ice cream faster.....
MP4/7-7. The 1992 Monaco Grand Prix winning car. Definitely would get there faster, but no on one tank of gas lol
for whatever reason, having almost bought a golf diesel after dieselgate, i went to the ny auto show and saw the 2019 jetta with the new body style, having been impressed with the 2018 with its 1,4 turbo. also at the show was the honda hybrid and the new arteon. so, when my kia forte was making really bad noises i rushed to my vw dealer and bought a 2019 jetta, 8 speed auto 416500. 46 mpg from the phila suburbs to atlantic city and back.at 80mph with the air on. a couple years ago i got 55mpg on back roads, lenox mass. to williamstown, steady 55. i would bet that my car would have won your contest!
Is one of the crew the guy from Flywheel Films?
Yes, Jordan helps us on some of our bigger films. He's a great add to our team. Thanks for watching!
I'll have the car that doesn't need an smart phone to run.
You have a crack on that Lucid
The real question is how much will it cost to replace?
I saw two..that's gotta be expensive. 😮
Car wow does this a lot.
Should have brought a 1997 TDI passat, those can get 1000miles to the tank.
I live in the uk. I had a mk7 fiesta 1.6 diesel. I drove it like I stole it 90% of the time. It returned 70-80mpg. I’d rather have another than an electric thing
5:10 pssst... I think you meant electrons ☝🤓
Hybrid should be the future.
Hybrid is late twentieth century or early twenty first century and not the future my friend.
The future will be cars that run on energon cubes or proto culture.
45:27 it may be hard coded but BMS lies…
As the saying goes, “Don’t Trust the BMS”
I had an 84 rabbit. It was baby shit tan with baby shit tan interior. 55 mpg.
Come to Edna’s in Lehi, I’ll hook you up with some awesome food for a drive in the Emira! 😊
There’s an extremely good reason Toyota stuck with hybrids , my wife Prius A which is a station wagon version uses 3.3-7 litres to the 100km , yeah it can easily do over 900km on a single tank which is small cause Japan 🇯🇵 😂
