    This video is a detailed description of Hicks Yew. Hicks Yew is a narrow growing upright conifer. It can reach 15 feet in height, but is easy to keep much smaller. Hicks Yew is a low maintenance plant that works great on the corner of a foundation or as a screening plant.

    I bought a couple quart size Hicks Yews at Walmart's end of season clearance last fall. They sat in their pots all winter in the great room, got watered if/when I remembered to do that, and look just as good 9 months later, so I figure they're worth the time and effort to plant outdoors. The Walmart horticulturist loves Yews for the Colorado foothills, because they are so hardy, but they may need a fertilizer application to get them to wake up in Spring.

    Seawater tolerant - Replaced all my hurricane flooded dead shrubs ,(ilex & camellias I loved ), with hicks yews. From hicks nursery ( where hicks developed them for that purpose) . They’re easy Maintenance & doing great in every location.

    My Hick's Yews will not grow. I planted 2 of them about 3.5 years ago; they are still there but they only grow about 6 inches per year & they are like one stalk wide. They look pathetic and sickly. I don't know what to do. I fertilize them twice a year with granules. I hate the idea of ripping them out and starting over again. I bought them from Home Depot.

    I have been wondering if I could plant a bush or two infront of the house as a screen against stronger winds these days, and as a nice border. I wasn't sure if I could plant them on my own as I would need to dig deep enough, but after Jim's video, I know I need to buy some shrub fertilizer and soil to ensure it is long-lasting. Thank you

    I planted some 10 years ago as a hedge. Each year I've shaped it so they're now very dense & about 5 feet tall. What rear neighbors? Ha ha. Nowhere to grow but up.

    hello! we have 2 especially odd sized beds at the front of our Northeast facing home that need an evergreen foundation plant to fill each of them... it is currently bare now... these hick's yews seem like something that maybe 2 planted together in each bed would do the trick... (we would allow them to grow together but trim to keep them shaped as one large blob and also size controlled to the size we need). is that right??? we are SO confused with all the different types of yews available... ideally, we need something (or a few somethings that will grow together) to take up a 8 foot long by 4 foot wide by 8-9 foot height.... hoping you can advise before we mess up! also- we are located in the suburbs right outside Boston, massachusetts zone 6. thanks so much for all you do! we LOVE your channel!

    Thanks for the video. How long can they stay out of the pot? My neighbor cut his down and took them out of the ground yesterday and I don’t know if I should plant them in a pot or in the ground. It’s around 45° out here going to stay cool for a week or two.

      HortTube with Jim Putnam. Hello my name is Anne a friend of mine brought over 8 of these trees all most taller than 5 ft. We both planted them about 14 or so inches in the ground. Were they are there is no shade. Too be honest I have no idea what I am doing. I water them most everyday around 3 pm. Lately its been raining so I leave them alone. How do i help them to grow and be healthy?

    Hi Jim! Is the absence of new/light roots in container conifers necessarily a sign that the plant is dead? And is there a way to stimulate the growth of new roots in the fall?

  • @MrGingerbrown
    @MrGingerbrown 5 років тому

    Hi Jim, love your channel. I have a shady, north facing part of my foundation that i need to fill with some evergreen height. I just put in a row of 4 emerald arborvitae but now I'm realizing that this spot may not get enough sun for them. Yews were originally in this spot when we bought our house but my parents had them removed bc they were overgrown and too close to the foundation at the time. I know that these are slow growing, but what more mature feet sizes of these tend to be available if i want more instant height? I'm thinking between 4-5ft or 5-6ft, and am in Northeast TN.

    How much height do you gain each year? I know you said slow grow so I am worried that it will take many many years to get the height I want. (Tree is 36 inches and I'm looking for 6 ft as a min goal.)

      Without knowing where you are and conditions, it's pretty tough to answer that... But in my experience, root rot is often the cause of something like that. I've lost Rhodie and boxwood that way and the one right next to it was fine.

    The tips of my yew bush/ hedge r dead looking, but has a lot of new growth coming on this year, I planted two of them last spring, but I lost one, I’m watering it good, and have fertilised it with miracle grow, liquid, but I had also putsome ozmacoat in the soil in the beginning , it’s in well drained soil, but full morning sun, so if it’s got this new growth on it, do u think it’s going to b ok? Maybe the dead tips will.....

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  6 років тому +1

      I don't know where in the country you live, but if get rainfall they probably don't need this much attention. I never use quick release fertilizers on my shrubs. It could burn them.

  • @osands
    @osands 5 років тому

    Do some leaves turn yellow before pushing new growth in the spring like hollies? reason I ask is I have two planted very close to a very large maple and I cant tell whether its problems with maple tree or if they are just doing their normal yellowing before new growth. I do see some light green type bud new growth happening too. They have been there for almost 1 year. I planted them in like june of last year I think.

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  5 років тому +1

      Most evergreens do some shedding in the spring as the new growth appears. If it is excessive something else is going on. Could be all the rain we have had. Probably won't know if it's a problem until mid may really. Good luck with them.
