You are the only one out there doing this. Pointing out what they are doing wrong AND telling us how to fix it. I am learning more from this than any other instructional jumping video.
Yo Dusty! I’ve been following your posts for a while and love how you’re not giving another learn to jump in 5 mins type of thing. As far as the big preload before the jump goes , I agree , it’s a sure fire way to induce the dead sailor, especially as jumps get bigger . How do I know? I was one that paid for “professional jump lessons”. That encouraged the stomp into the bike as you go up the take off. Works ok on small stuff , but as the jumps Get bigger with more air time, this ain’t the way to go. Thanks for getting some good info out there about the correct SAFE way to jump. 🤘🏽
On the 1st example, a buddy of mine did a big jump and did the same thing. What also got him is the jump is about 10ft slope down. The wind gust was blowing and the wind pushed him off center too. He did like the 1st rider, his foot came off the pedal, his leg was straight, and he landed with a straight leg, flat footed. It pushed his leg straight into his hip! This broke his hip. Be safe out there Shredders!
Nice breakdowns! I wonder if #2 had a bit of 'butt breaking' also, I've seen that happen many times with shorter people on 29ers not accepting the jump and on drops! that last drop was brutal, she needs to do some bench pressing! :)
Great analysis here. I declined the last drop highlighted here last summer due to the gravel and sandy rock that composed the landing, and I had hard knee and elbow pads. While I feel the pain she must be feeling and assume there were many minutes spent picking small rocks from flesh, I can't help but think that some lessons are learned the hard way, and in this case it was "start small and build".
Love your videos! Big fan! In regards of drops, especially big ones, best technique (imo) is pushing butt back and up. Pushing back unweights your front tire, punching up up unweights rear tire. Pushing forward with your arms are for “oh $hit” moments, J-hop - for technical and slow drops. Bunny hop - for Jeff Lenoskys 😊
I love how you present these fails. I try to see if I can figure them out in my mind, then listen to your explanations. I'm sorry to say that I totally missed with that poor girl who just completely flipped out. I was thinking J-hop pop. Silly me!
Hi Dusty, thanks for your great videos. I was wondering if I'm the only one who sees something else in no. 1, aka the Dead Sailor: the guy turns his handlebars for a whip. He's kinda clumsy about it with all the heavy clothing, but as he does this he turns his torso left and voila, the bike follows. The tabletop feature is assymetrical, and the landing is slopped to the left, and he's taken left unintentionally, tries to straighten himself and falls.
Actually, in the drop video, I think she was trying to do the push technique but did it too weakly and too late, which is why her body was over the back wheel but the front wheel was dropping. Should have practiced harder on the smaller drops.
Thanks for taking the time to make and share Dusty! These are very informative, you obviously know ur mountain bike coaching. Did you learn this through BICP?
@Theshredacademy I would agree, 👍 not into the whole pay to play. Seems like they will just pass anyone willing to pay there yearly dues etc. Thanks Dusty! Looking forward to the next video 📷
Hi, Dusty! Happy New Year from Singapore! When doing drops, I find that when the receiver is steep, the drive-bike-forward-and-stand-up will cause me to land rear wheel first. But (with proper speed) the just-fide-the-drop method allows me to match the angle of the receiver and land slightly front wheel first. So what am I doing wrong here?
That second crash seemed like it was more influenced by deceleration from the butt buzz than anything, hard to believe you didnt even mention that part
the second jump would have worked if she wasn't on a 29er, a 27.5 rear wheel, she wouldn't have rubbed her butt on the rear tire, "MIXED WHEEL", and better technique, I'm not that good, so I use a full time rear fender, I'm always riding the fender on drops.
@Theshredacademy I'm so far north, Canada is to the west. But if you ever want to visit Niagara Falls, just let me know. We have a few pirate runs over and down into the Mighty Niagara River Gorge.
Again. Beautifuly explained. There is really to much junk/ useless videos on how to jump; Apart from stand up to the jump I found another sharlatant on the Mountain Bike Academy...
@@jernejrabzelj1200 man i saw him put out a video saying to use the two wheel lift 🤦. Crying I want to make a video but also don’t want to be that guy.
I am new to learning jumps and drops. My biggest fear is OTB's as illustrated in the video. I have found that the stand up to the jump technique has helped me considerably. Simple concept and easy to execute. Perhaps this is an evolution in my progression to better jumping/ drops techniques.

This was the best episode yet. PERFECT for beginners and advanced beginners learning to jump

I agree. Butt breaking causes the forward rotation.

Beautifully explained, best jump coaching content ever, I will definitely benefit learning and progressing, keep going, best regards.
I just watch for the music in the beginning and your commentary. Some of the things you say or how you say they absolutely send me 🤣
Great explanations. Thank you from the UK

No BICP and PIMBA are horrible. Pay to play system. Are they in cahoots with NINjA hmmmm

Honestly I think I got more out of this than watching the actual jumping tutorial videos

You really do an excellent job with this what happened. I want to book you for private sessions to teach me how to jump
