    Just a little saying that I was taught 30+ years ago.
    For the ground (green/bare) wire, first to make last to brake. If anything would go wrong the path to the ground is there to take the hit and not you.

    • @RVHabit
      @RVHabit  Рік тому

      You are correct that is great advice.

      Very true when talking AC voltage, just the opposite for batteries. Why? This is because the negative battery cable is connected to the ground, and if you were to accidentally touch a live wire (your wrench slipping then touching a ground(chassis), it could cause a short circuit and damage your vehicle. By disconnecting the negative cable first you avoid any chance of arching/short circuit. This is standard practice and the automotive world.

    Great video, I'm looking to switch out my lead acid for lifepo4 batteries and was wondering about the conversion because I knew they charge at a higher voltage.
    My questions are 1 is it ok to run the rv's DC accessories on that higher voltage?
    And 2 What about the power feed coming from the 7 way off your tow vehicles
    alternator? Does that enter into the equation in any way? Thanks for your advice.

    From what I have viewed on UA-cam videos is basically you can change your converter to any model you wish (I have a WFCO which isn't Lithium supported). Also WFCO the AD products isn't necessary Auto detect. From what I have read, you have to deplete your batteries to get the auto detect function to work, which doesn't make sense. I have been looking at progressive dynamic which is easier to set up for Lithium batteries..Thanks again..

      You definitely want to check your cable gauge for how long the cable run us. If the cable is too thin it could overheat and/or catch fire.

    Where do you find companies who know how to do this? I want to upgrade my inverter and I guess I need a new converter bc my lithium battery seems to be overcharging with my rooftop and suitcase solar panels. The battery won’t charge beyond 13.6 anymore.

    • @RVHabit
      @RVHabit  Місяць тому

      Any good RV tech can check and or replace the converter. I always prefer a company that is dedicated to RV repair instead of an RV dealer service dept.

    • @RVHabit
      @RVHabit  Місяць тому

      Well that is a little harder. The bigger problem is if you can find someone local or you may have to travel a bit. Brian from RV with Tito has a great resource to get a solar installer near you, check out his page at www.rvwithtito.com/rv-solar-installers/

    Nicely done, Thank you! I just bought a 2022 Winnebago TT that I will take delivery in two months. I will convert to lithium. Do you think that the factory converter will be able to take lithium? I've asked the dealer and the builder without any clear answers. The TT is 30amps shore power. PowerMax converter sells 35amps and 45amps. The 45amps is only 10$ more. If I have the place to fit it in the panel should I buy the bigger 45amps? Maybe the 45amps would last longer and the fan would kick-in lest often. Thanks for your help!

    • @RVHabit
      @RVHabit  Рік тому

      A couple of things to consider. Check with the manufacturer of the RV's converter if it is lithium compatible. Most converters today can easily be changed to a lithium profile. If you purchase a whole new converter only use the amount of amps that came originally with the RV. This is because the wiring will probably only be suitable for that size. Increasing the amps may requiring upgrading wiring.

    on the 4 light system, do the the other 3 buttons still work with Lithium? Grey, Black, and Fresh tank buttons?

    • @RVHabit
      @RVHabit  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes those light indicators have nothing to do with the batteries. Grey, fresh, and black read the sensors in the corresponding tank to indicate the level. The battery sensor works on voltage. Since lithium will always read above 12.6v until nearly depleted the battery light will not give you an accurate reading. A battery monitor is needed to see the true level of the batteries.

    I replaced the stand-alone model (separate from my fuse and breaker box) in my motorhome with a Progressive Dynamics 80a LiFePo-4 compatible converter #PD9180A to charge my 560ah LiFePo-4 bank. This model uses a 20-amp electric plug that needs to be plugged into a 20a receptacle. It charges my lithiums more than twice as fast as my old 60a Progressive Dynamics lead acid converter charged my lead acid batteries. Not only is the 80a model more powerful, but the charging profile is different, as lithiums accept the charge so much faster. The smart wizard is no longer used on my model.

    • @RVHabit
      @RVHabit  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes lithium's accept charge very quickly. Anyone considering upgrading from a 60 amp to 80 amp charger should make certain the current wiring can handle the upgrade.

    • @SuperSushidog
      @SuperSushidog 11 місяців тому

      @@RVHabit Absolutely. I looked in my breaker panel and discovered that the wire on this circuit that only fed the inverter was wired with a 20a breaker and the wire size is 12AWG. Since the 80a charger draws about 16 amps max, I'm OK. If there were multiple outlets on this circuit, it would be possible to overload this circuit, but the breaker would pop.

    • @RVHabit
      @RVHabit  11 місяців тому

      You need to check the wiring from the converter to the batteries. The converter is pushing a lot of amps to the batteries and depending how far the batteries are from converter this is usually the wire that may be undersized.

    • @SuperSushidog
      @SuperSushidog 11 місяців тому +1

      @@RVHabit Thanks for the tip. It was 4awg but I replaced it with 2 awg because my 50A mppt charge controller uses this same wire. I thought they might add together if they are both running at the same time, but if the converter senses the increase in voltage from the solar charging it doesn't kick on. The run is only about 3-4 ft as it's in the compartment right next to the battery compartment.

    Why could you not install the jumper (recommended by the mfg.) on your old one and save some money?

    • @RVHabit
      @RVHabit  3 місяці тому

      Because the original old board on the converter was not lithium compatible. Most newer boards on the converter are now lithium compatible and a simple switch of the jumper will do.
