- DIY Lithium Camper Battery Conversion using the Dr.Prepare LifeP04 batteries. This video is step by step how we converted our camper from lead acid batteries to lithium. Have you ever wondered how to convert your camper or RV’s lead acid batteries to lithium batteries aka lithium iron phosphate batteries.? This conversion requires several component upgrades, but is not a complicated process. LifeP04 batteries are becoming more and more available and RV batteries, camper batteries and campervan batteries can all be converted to litium.
This conversion is perfect for Vanlife and Overland camper rigs. These lithium batteries, work well with alternator, charging, solar, charging, and shore power charging.

I just watched this video and found it very well made with usefull information. I would like to suggest you change out that galavanized 4"x4" junction box on the inside of the tounge to a "SEALED" box designed for outdoor use. That thing is for interior use only and is going to fill up with road grit and water.

Need to change the charge profile to lithium on the renogy dc to dc charger. Need a paper clip to push it in till the light above the battery symbol turns blue. It will be in the manual that comes with the charger.
I think you missed the inverter cost
So I bought a lithium battery for my rv that previously had a lead acid. My camper says it’s wired for solar.
My question is what will happen since I have no clue if my inverter is see up with lithium charging lol. I will update what I find if interested.
I haven’t found my inverter yet still looking. The camper is used by the way. 2019 model
My guess is that the AC to DC charger is probably not meant for Lithium chemistry batteries. Particularly with a 2019 model. I’m thinking even on newer models being set up for lithium is optional.
awesome set-up. I'm confused about the dc to dc converter. That is a very expensive piece of equipment. Could you have used 2 units, 1 for a pwm solar controller and
a separate unit for the dc to dc charger. I believe for a basic solar system a pwm unit
would work just fine and cost much less. Also where does the new converter get wired
in? Directly to batteries? No issue with the 3 separate systems back-feeding into each
other?
Thanks for watching the video and commenting! The multi-stage processor of the MPPT allows both the solar and alternator to be used to charge at the same time.
We chose the MPPT charge controller for several reasons. First, it is an all in one solution that is super simple to install and use. Because I make DIY videos to serve a wide audience with various skill levels, this made the most sense for this project. We plan on putting at least 400w solar on this camper which is 33.3 amps so a safe charge controller would be a 40amp. At the time of this video It was difficult to find a 40 amp MPPT with alternator charging so we bumped up to 50 amp. We priced 40amp PWMs at $150. A quality dc to dc controller runs about $100. The Renogy MPPT controller has low temp charge protection built in. This allows folks to purchase less expensive LifeP04 batteries that do not have low temp charge protection. Lastly, while PWM technology does work, the digital maximum power point tracking technology is much more efficient.

Does back-feeding happen when you are essentially hooking 3 systems together?

@mark98070 We ran the shore power to the bus bars. We have had no issues with back feeding. If you read the description of the MPPT on Amazon, they talk about the multi phase processor that it has. If you do not need 50 A there is a 30 amp which would allow up to 350 watts at 12 volts but 300 would be better. Check out my last video for my solar generator build. That project was very similar, except it is in a box. I used a 20 amp PWM for that project because I only plan on using 200 W solar.. Do you have any trouble using the lighter gage wire from your junction box to the MPPT for alternator charging? I have same charger and was wanting to do this same thing from my junction box on trailer. Seen many use heavy gage wire coming from vehicle battery via Andersen Connector and wanted to avoid that.
Thanks for checking out the video! Are you talking about the 10 gauge wire that we ran for alternator charging to the junction box on the frame of the camper? If so, that wire is working just fine.
@@MrFredsDIY yep. Good. I might try that myself. I was worried the current draw to the MPPT might be too much and would have to be on a heavier wire.
I've put one 12v lifepo4 battery in my 5th wheel. I have no solar and have no intention to do so. I changed my converter to the newer style to charge the new battery. Can I leave the camper plugged into shore power the same as I did with the old lead acid battery?
We leave ours plugged in to Shore power without any issues. The Renogy charge controller that we used says that it’s no problem. Double check with your model, you can probably find that on their website. Thanks for checking out our video!
