There are so many interesting ways to combine different mediums with soft pastels. I hope you enjoy this tutorial where I demonstrate how to incorporate acrylic painting with soft pastels. I loved the result once I determined the best way to prepare my surface.

Thank you so much for your answer. I stared out with oils 50 yrs ago and went to watercolor about 10 yrs ago, moved into ceramics, because of your videos l'm looking forward to using the pastels I bought about forty years ago I'm sure their hard if not by now they should be. I'm on my way to the art store. Thanks again and happy painting.
Thank you for sharing this great video. Love how you "discovered" that the pumice was too gritty. That's how we all learn. I continue to enjoy watching and learning from your videos. Keep up the good work.
Interesting technique and love the soft magical feel of these paintings! 😍🎨
That field of flowers is magical! Stunning work, Susan! Thank you 🙏
Dear Susan, I haven't written anything for a long time. First I was busy with experimenting with acrylic painting and then I was in the hospital.I could only do sketches there.
I have used mixed media techniques with watercolours. And I like your idea with acrylic.
I will try it.
I was wondering about you sweetheart. I’m so sorry you were in the hospital and I pray you’re doing OK now! So glad to hear from you.
I love it ! I knew to ground flowers and trees and such. But didn’t know really how!.. Thanks , this was awesome.
YAY!! Thank you! @karenleah1477 Comments like this are part of why I do this. I love inspiring others, especially in their art journey! Thank you for your sweet comment!
Superb - fantastic skill and great tutorial - I’m inspired!
I enjoyed your explaining your experience with the different techniques. The finished paintings are truly beautiful! Thank you for sharing the information.
It is a beautiful
New pastel technique? More like “Nice, and that’s pretty unique!” Thanks for sharing.
Very helpful and well taught. Thanks.
So beautiful! Can’t wait to try.
Beautiful,amazing Art🌹🌹
Thank u for ur sharing the information. It’s really interesting and useful) thanks
Even though the video is long, I was just so attached to it. Your technique is brilliant and you explain it so well, this is really what I was looking for! Thank you very much, support from a portuguese viewer! ^^
Glad you enjoyed it!
I had wondered about using acrylic as an underpainting. Very cool to see how you did it and loved your paintings. Thank you
I'm excited to try this technique! I've been afraid to try pastels because of the framing/ glass requirement and protecting them in storage.
Do you think that Patel pencils and or panpastels would also work?? Sooo pretty!!
Yes, I've been using Pan pastels lots in my more recent videos and you could use them for this lesson as well. I often like to add pastel pencils on top of the pan pastels.
Gorgeous! Love your work and tutorials!
I learned a lot,thank you🌹🌹
Wonderful painting. Thanks.
i love my Arteza acrylics! I got that 60 set, and they're great. I want to try more. I love your channel, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Thanks so much. So helpful.
I'm using the PanPastels tools and sponges to blend now. It helps with detail work.
I just inherited my grandmothers soft pastel collection, and I’m super excited to try them on some of my acrylic paintings on canvas. Have you ever used soft pastels on top of acrylic on canvas? If so, do you think just the clear gesso and the texture of the canvas would be enough grit? Thx!
How wonderful Christy! I'm excited for you too! I have painting with pastels on canvas using clear gesso for grit. I applied two coats. It worked fairly well, but there was still a bit of texture from the canvas. Maybe experiment with something small first. Have fun!
Thank you for this wonderful video, Susan. I love the RIcheson Gray Matters paper palettes. I have them in two sizes. I lay my paints out on the bigger one and do mixing on the smaller one. It works out so well. No palettes to clean.
I'm very interested in trying the Arteza paper. It looked like it was over 200#. I'm sure it buckles less than 140#.
It really behaved well with wet mediums. ;) I also sort of like the patterned texture. ;)
@@monetcafe I must try it!
Merci. Very interesting
I wonder if you could’ve sanded away some of that grit. Nice job thanks for sharing these ideas. I really love the marsh painting! Question for you....Do you like the acrylic well enough to use it again or would you prefer just to go back and use water color underneath or wet down your pastel with alcohol for your underpainting?
Hi. I love your painting. I’m just wondring if i can use a liquid glazing instead of clear gesso? Thank you
Thank you so much and no, the glazing medium won’t work the same as clear gesso. That’s because clear gesso has a little bit of grit or sand in it that allows the pastels to adhere to the surface.
Good morning Susan, you look really well... You must be rested :)
You are one, out of five, of all the artist I'm aware of that articulates the importance of value in using color.
In the book starting at 3:45 that shows the color wheel on the right and the valve scale on the left.
'In my own opinion' - this is where the 'optical coherency' of the young aspiring artist, is lost because of bad editing; (the gray scale is upside down.) especially next to your editing that is so great.
I'll explain: we all know why its called a color wheel. If we were to devide the wheel vertically; both sides straight up and down. Then turn both sides to grayscale, we will see both sides of the wheel, equally in value. Orange is equal to green in value.
This is why I place the types of reds that are equal to blues in values.
If we were to mix orange and yellow, then mix green and yellow, both TERTIARY COLORS, should equal the same also in value.
This is worth pointing out, as you have shown before the difference in how we lable the grayscale.
I have looked at your work and it shows you are soon to be an accomplished artist.
WARNING! FYI, please do not publish untill you have your very best to show. Then you will reap what you have sewed into the fabric of your work.
❤
Exactly brother! I noticed the value scale was backward with respect to the numbering. I didn't comment on it in the video so as not to get into a full lesson on value. That's way cool about the color wheel and value. I love learning the amazing rules of color, which is just another example of how our universe screams of a Designer. ;)
I don't know about being "an accomplished artist", but as long as I am enjoying this beautiful journey, then that is accomplishment enough for me
Thank you so much, these are beautiful, uplifting and so inspiring! My partner loves the music, too, so wanted to thank you as well!
Wonderful. New subscriber. Thanks for the class and the inspiration.
Oh! I use paper palettes! Not that brand, though. Very nice, convenient!
Can you use this technique on gallery-grade canvas?
I've. never tried that Kathy. I always recommend trying something small to experiment. That's what I always do. :)
How do you seal a painting created with both acrylic and pastels?
Hi @jacquelinethomas763, I never spray a fixative on a soft pastel painting since it always darkens the final image.
To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. Here is a video of my process:ua-cam.com/video/4XD4SezFyBg/v-deo.html&t=209s
Good tutorial but would like to know if using varied types of pastel as affects archival stuff.
You shouldn’t have to worry about pastel works not being archival as long as you use pastels that are not subpar. Most professional pastel sets and sticks are archival, but just be careful when using student grade pastels. Hope that helps!
I love Arteza. I'll have to check these out. :)
I think you could also use glass for a palette with acrylics. I use the glass from a picture frame for oils and then tape colored paper on the other side as the background color for the palette.
So, do you prefer the Liquitex Clear Gesso to Golden's Pastel Ground?
Yes a glass over a piece of gray paper works great. I used to do that when I was doing more acrylic painting. I use the clear gesso mostly because it's affordable and I always have it handy, but I've also used the Golden's Pastel Ground and love it. I'll have to make a video with that product. Happy Painting!
One question, do the pastels fixate better at the end with this technique?
Beautiful!! I love the look of pastels. I just bought some but haven't dived in yet!!
How do you protect your finished painting if you aren't ready to frame it yet? How are they best stored?
Pastel painting is wonderful. So glad you bought some. Here is a video where I show my storage system using clear bags. I used to use a bag made by "Krystal Clear Bags", but have found them cheaper on www.clearbags.com
Happy Painting!
ua-cam.com/video/HVJmuw6O4vQ/v-deo.html
I am like you, had to have them. Love watching Monet Cafe and Karen Margulis. Both are awesome. The few times I tried pastels... my dive turned into a face plant. I am really good at mud blobs. I think I put too much color all over??? They both do such an amazing job of putting just the right amount and get that layer in. I think another couple of videos and I will be ready. LOL.
Just curious if you sprayed it to set the pastels.
No, I actually never spray my final paintings because fixative darkens the piece. I store my paintings in clear plastic bags with a piece of foam core board for support. It works great. I get my clear bags from www.clearbags.com
@@monetcafe Thank You!
Beautiful paintings; great gift sharing your talent with us💞What kind of gel you are using to cover the acrylpaint? Matt gel ? Thank you
For these paintings, I am using "clear liquid gesso".... as opposed to regular gesso. The Clear gesso has a bit of grit to it resulting in a sanded surface for the pastels to have something to adhere to. I have also used various other products to make my own pastels surfaces and just made a video showing 8 different techniques. Check it out. It's one of my more recent videos. :) Happy painting!
Love your painting! Fantastic! And love the way you explained everything , super helpful! Could you please say the tool you used for blending again? I am not familiar with hardware store stuff... thanks a million!
Thanks so much! I love helping out :) It's called "pipe foam insulation". I think it's the stuff people use to insulate their pipes from cold temperatures, but it works great for blending. I've also heard that "pool noodles" (the long tubular things kids use in pools) is good for blending as well. Hope that helps :)
Thank you for sharing your talent And knowledge of pastels, I am new to pastels, I saw a video of yours where you used wax pastels and soft pastels in the same painting, is that combination sellable?. Thank you and have a great day. PS love your work.
I believe it is sellable, although some artists have been concerned about the wax pastels not being "archival". Well, I think the paintings should last for decades if not for a hundred years or more, so I say..."sell it" :) :) . Happy painting!
What a gorgeous painting! Just wondering, what paper did you use? Thank you!
Thank you, it is very useful. How do you finish it? Framing under glass?
rsenglishteacher Yes, pastel paintings need to be framed under glass for permanent display. However, I have a system where I use foam board and clear plastic bags to store them temporarily until I sell them or frame them myself.
@@monetcafe thank you
Both are beautiful! Are those reference photos in the FB folders? I've stocked up but I too have not jumped in yet... Hoping this up coming long weekend. Thank you for all your useful tips!
Thanks Ida :) Those pics aren't in the reference folders. I got the second one from www.pmp-art.com It's a great place to find reference material that is not copyrighted. ;)
So can you reverse the process and underpaint with soft pastels and then paint with acrylics on top?
hello there...l wonder in this mixed technique which final varnish did you apply...?
how do you seal the painting to prevent the chalk from rubbing off?
I actually don't spray fixative at the end of my painting, but I put them in clear plastic bags. They stay safe and can be handled and shipped this way. The company I used is www.clearbags.com and I actually have a video of my process. Also, I recently found a product that may be able to be used as a final fix to pastel paintings without darkening them too much. That's been the problem with most fixatives... they simply darken your final painting. I'll be making a video soon of the new product so stay tuned ! :)
As always just scrumptious! Thank you for sharing your art with us lucky wannabes! ;D Is that reference photo available on our Monet Cafe Group on FB?
Sorry, but I got the photo from www.pmp-art.com . . ... It's a great place to find copyright free reference images. Check it out and I just searched for "Poppies" to find this image.
Thanks I found it! I have been on pmp art for a while.....just forgot to remember! I have a few pix on there too.
@@viviandibrell849 Ha ha.... I often forget to use it too. It's such a great resource for photos!
Hello Susan, today I painted acrylic on canvas and because I couldn’t manage to achieve the right colour mix with acrylic I tried adding the exact shade I wanted by using chalk pastel, I loved the colour but now my dilemma is if I should protect it with a fixative for chalk pastel or use a clear varnish! I’m worried that if I varnish it over the chalk pastel will move with the brush stroke, Help 😩
Maggie, one of the most common questions I get is about sealing a pastel painting. I actually never spray a fixative or apply varnish on a pastel painting. It will darken the color or muddy the pastels. I simply use clear bags to protect the paintings prior to framing or shipping. I get my clear bags from www.clearbags.com. I get the ones for artwork or photography with a flap close seal.
Gorgeous! I'm curious - what is the benefit of underpainting with acrylic as opposed to doing the artwork entirely in pastels? I'm a newbie.
Hi and I'm sorry I missed your question before. I like doing underpaintings (whether in acrylic or other mediums) because it really sets a mood. Also, it can provide a lovely base and color-interaction with the other colors I lay on top. It's so much more lively than just painting on white or a neutral surface. :) Good question.
If you put down an acrylic under painting wouldn't that be acting like liquid gesso??
Is possible to use this methode to paint on canvas? Thanks
Can you varnish over it?
Hi HeArtprojectsbySelly, I never "varnish" or spray fixative on my final pastel paintings because it darkens the painting. I sometimes use fixative during the working process, however, to darken and area or add a bit more grit by spraying fixative in specific areas. The workable fixative I use is Blaire Low Odor Fixative.
To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. Here is a video of my process:ua-cam.com/video/4XD4SezFyBg/v-deo.html&t=209s
Is it possible to use this technique on canvas?
I’ve had some success in painting with pastels on canvas. I basically did an under painting using acrylic or some other medium… Then I painted two layers of clear gesso on top. You have to use the clear Gesso and not the regular Gesso because it has a little bit of grit in it and it is clear so that your underpainting will show through. Let each layer dry first of course and then apply pastel. It’s a little texture roll, but I liked it.
@@monetcafe Thank you for your response. I guess it is safer to paint on canvas panel rather than stretched canvas?
Do you a fixative?
why adding the gesso before pastels?
Pastels don’t adhere well to flat surfaces, so if you use clear just so it gives a little grit to the paper. Be sure to use the clear Gesso though because the regular white gesso doesn’t have any grit or sand in it.
@@monetcafe thank you!
👌👍❤
Throw away pallets in a studio/home setting is wasteful. A glass pallet (home made from picture frame) with grey paper is reusable. Scrap dry paint off after use into trash.
Are those oil pastels? Nice work
Good question, needs to be more Clarification soft, oil, etc pastels.
You could of tried sanding it as well... might have been interesting.
