Wow, I just passed over this video, haven't seen any of your pre-2016 work. Personally I enjoy this more laid back, less energetic style of making videos. I can see why a majority of your audience like your more recent work, so I understand the increase of energy. Either way, energy or no, I will continue watching your content because it is hands down the best blacksmithing channel I have found.
Kruuxt I agree. I love this more laid back style.
I agree. Been watching since last shop in brittain, and now i really enjoy his first years. Great style and very educational. And im not even into blacksmithing work. But i love watching his channel.
I totally agree, but I appreciate Alec has found a way to appeal to both blacksmiths and his many other subs. Pros are due.
Nice work wish I could move metal that fast
I can't put my finger on it, but there is something with your voice that makes it very pleasing to listen to you narrate your videos. The videos are very informative aswell. Keep it up!
he always sounds like hes smiling while he talking :D
I liked this so much! I am, for the first time, watching all your older videos and i must say: although the great improvements on forging and editing videos, the essence of what you are and do has been and will always be the strongest and greatest and most motivational thing you could give us! i'd really like to get there in Norwich, share some pizza and beer and have a nice chat with you (and Sam maybe!) :)
So i just wanted to thank you for everything you do and tell you that i really hope this will go on for a really long time! Have a nice weekend :)
ausgezeichnete Arbeit
Very nice tutorial man! Makes me want to make an own ^___^!
+Daniel Lea same here! A friend of mine forge welds a pipe handle onto his spatulas, much like you would with a spear. It feels really comfortable. He also forge welds/rivets the spatula part so he doesn't have to do too much drawing out, but I like the one-piece design of this one too.
+Daniel Lea Thank you very much Daniel!!!!
+twinmill97 Thanks man!
I just went through his previous videos and now suddenly he sounds like the Alec we know and love. lol
Man if Alec had any idea of how far he would come in the next 5 years
Probably going to be the first project I create when I build my forge! :D
I've used the cross peen 3 times now on 3 different billets and they ALL came out like leaves. Nothing even close to a spatula and I followed this video as close as I could.
Another great video! That a bar of metal can be spread out so much!
Great video. just starting out in blacksmithing and a friend has already asked for a bbq spatula
The 3 people who disliked are people who think that blacksmithing is dangerous even with proper tools and protection.
espátula
this is like some ASMR blacksmithing.
I like the regular videos.
+Paul Krzysz Thanks a bunch Paul!
You have a great voice and way with words. I could see you on a BBC tv series in the future. Keep up the good work.
+farmersimonk Hahahah!!! Thank you so much! :D
Fascinating and beautiful to watch.
Love the style of these old videos!!!!!
This is the first Alec Steele video that I ever watched back when it was made. I was watching AWE Me, the blacksmith show where they make things from movies and video games. I saw the title, thought of spongebob, and subscribed. I’m so glad he still makes content.
Hey Alec, enjoy your videos what size stock 1/2 or 5/8. I I'm just getting started took lyles class on tool making really helpful . thanks again for your videos and keep up the good work
"or you could attach a string if your into the tactical stuff" XD I love it haha great vids Alec! I watch everyday and you got me back into forging with your amazing content as inspiration. Making videos or no you will always be my favorite person who made/makes videos on UA-cam! :)
Can you make one with a central rib? A bricklayer's trowel has a strong rib at the attachment point. Many cheat and just weld the handle on, but Alec, you could forge one without cheating. If you make a small one it would be an archeologist's dream, especially if made of stainless.
Alec, I know you used 1/2" for this, but do you think i can get away with 3/8"? Thank
I've been a subscriber since just after this video came out, and I'll still come back to these videos and enjoy them just as much as I did then. Cheers!
nice, two dislikes
Three by the time I watched it.
(Nearly said "three now" but people might assume I was the one who did it!)
Well, metals conduct heat pretty good, i wonder how did ypu make sure the handle is long enough that the user doesnt burn his hand during barbecue. Is there a formula or like a base assumption point?
A great video for us noobs. Thanks for the excellent content and eloquent commentary.
another fantastic video! keep up the great work, both forging and film-making!
love this! going to do this!!! when my skills,at the anvil get better! lol
Hi Alec, have you ever thought of making a BBQ tong?
just wondering im thinking of getting into blacksmithing in england and i dont know where to get my steal from have u got any ideas
What is the length of the steel used in this project, thinking about recreating it
great item! thanks for posting.
Makes me want to make an entire kitchen out of Damascus...
This is great, what size is your stock an how long is this?
Very nice video and instruction Alec!
Is this ASMR?
👍👍👍
Nice! Did you make that anvil or did you buy it? I have a fisher anvil I bought which was a terrible mistake. The edges are pretty much useless and the face aint too wide. I am debating if I should sell it and buy/make another one. Can you forge pretty much anything you would on a regular anvil or is it only for small stuff? Thanks
+Matt Behnke I made this anvil! There is anther video on my channel that speaks more about it! It is made out of a block of mild steel, and, I believe it is the best anvil to learn blacksmithing on!
+Alec Steele I saw the video and thought it was the coolest thing! Maybe I will make one to use as a portable anvil and for demos so I can let others try forging. What dimensions steel did you use? Thanks
Clean as usual. Looking good man!
excellent teaching and a great spatula
How about a video on that anvil your using? Material, cost, fab, etc.
+FRUNTCASTER Hey! I have a video showing the benefits and reasoning behind it on my channel! When I make another I may well indeed film it!
+Alec Steele -- well crap, not sure how I missed that video? I'll search for it right now. I get the reasoning (I think?), I might even have added another step with an even more obtuse radius, which may or may not be as useful as a horn.
Love the video dude. Great narrative.
Very nicely done Alec. Glad you are doing well. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you sir! That is very kind of you!
Hi Alec, nice video. There seems to be a cut in it where you tidy up the spatula blade and give it clean edges, particularly around the top where the handle joins. It would be good to know how you do this - file at red heat, file it cold, chisel it out, power tool or something else?
Hi Lizzie!
In the interest of keeping the tutorial short, it does indeed appear I did not focus on that enough! However, a reason I did not think too highly to leave it in is because it is I fact wonderfully simple!
There is no filling or grinding on this spatula: it is forged to finish. To allow the edges of the spatula to be relatively even, I use the round die of my rounding hammer to push any material that doesn't go out far enough out to the edge!
Beautiful!!! Good job dude!!!
Cool!!! Thanks for videos!
I am very pleased you like it!
Once again another spot on video from you. Well done!!
+John Terrett Thank you SIR!
Great project, you have such a command of your hammer
+Frank Fomkin Thank you Frank! Very kind of you!
Great video, will have a great time trying my own.
+Rick Nowlin Hey Rick! I am thrilled that you gained value from this! Makes it very worth doing! :) Thanks for letting me know!
Alec I love your work and the way you explain they way you do things very valuable for one who is wanting to get into smithing I have a question for you please , when for example you are making a piece like the spatula and heat dissipates from the thinnest part quickly because of thickness and width etc is their any reason you couldn't apply a gas heat /blow torch to the anvil at the point you are working on, to slow down the loss of heat or would that destroy the integrity of the anvil over time? To me it just seems logical that you could work the object being made on a hot spot longer or even have a separate anvil to do such work with rather than going back and forward to the forge and reheating all the time.
Thanking you
Tony ( Western Australia)
+Moondyne .Joe If you apply enough heat to the anvil to prevent the heat sink effect, you would essentially ruin the heat treatment of your anvil. You would be left with a very soft anvil face. However, you're on to something with the torch. If you have the torch nearby at the ready, you could very quickly heat up the spatula. If time is an important commodity, this would cut down the travel time to and from the fire.
Glenn Wiebe Thanks Glenn If you don't ask these questions you never know the answers
Tony
beautiful bro
this is kick mun :)
