The balloons were bio-degradable, however it would have a major impact on local wildlife and possibly ecosystems. Sad, all that helium used up for a publicity stunt. Human ignorance.

Environmental impact is exaggerated; they break down when exposed to sunlight.

I wondered they would be more of a hazard to airplanes flying overhead, probably the initial reason some areas restricted the release of them anyways, you have to think what a bunch of nitrile rubber balloons could do to a jet engine if they get ingested and tangled up inside of one.

@@avagiii then its still 1.5m ballons everyday vs 2m plastic bags every minute. Sure, its a huge waste and has undoubtably an environmental impact but your original comment seemed like you wanted to draw the attention to people releasing balloons as if it was worse than the daily plastic bag usage.
