Soso Mississippi Tornado - Invisible EF4 Horror
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 жов 2024
- April 12, 2020 a powerful long tracking tornado with EF4 preliminary rating. Despite the impressive radar images, this rain wrapped tornado was extremely difficult to see even at very close proximity. The tornado heavily impacted the town of Soso Mississippi and there are at least 4 fatalities reported so far. A storm complex developing near New Orleans would cross into Southern Mississippi and organize into a powerful long tracking supercell. The town of Bassfield was impacted and the tornado would track near Seminary, Collins, and Laurel before dissipating near Pachuta. (This is preliminary data based on my radar analysis). Unfortunately Soso Mississippi was directly in the path as well.
This storm had an impressive radar echo with well defined hook echo, powerful velocity couplet and lofted debris ball signature but in person, it was practically invisible. The tornado was a vague, gray wall of rain hardly distinguishable from the enveloping clouds. If you were in the path of this tornado, I imagine for many there was no visual clues other than slowly increasing intensity of wind and rain and then the devastating force of the core. I managed to stay within roughly 2 miles of the tornado for an eternal ten minutes or so... So close I could hear the distinct low drown powerful waterfall sound, but it was almost impossible to see. In one of my clips I ramped up the contrast to nuclear levels and if you look closely with perhaps some imagination, you can barely make out the edges of the wedge.
JAMES UPDATE:
We were able to track down James and he is recovering well...
"On April 12, 2020 Easter Sunday James Neely lost his family home when an EF-4 tornado struck near Moss Mississippi. He was inside the house when it collapsed but miraculously crawled from the rubble with only minor cuts and bruises. The beautiful old home built by his grandfather in 1918 had stood amidst ancient magnolias, cedars and pecan trees, all of which now lie toppled by the storm.
I wish I had taken a moment to film the fireman and the State Trooper (not sheriff) searching for James. To recap, the fireman, without a moment of hesitation, slithered on his belly through a tight crevice into a crumbling house. True heroism and inspiration for humanity would have been captured... Something we see very little of on social networks (not because it doesn't exist in high volumes, but because the algorithms seem to be angled more toward engaging arguments and dividing rather than uplifting and uniting... More on that... This is not the algorithm programmers fault, it's the collective fault of people who click the crap).
As the state trooper was still searching for James instead of detouring traffic, the area had filed up with vehicles and people standing around gawking at the damage, some wondering what they could do to help. I dashed back to my vehicle to secure my open windows and expensive cameras laying on my seats. That's when I saw James. I said "Are you James." In a daze he answered yes. But I needed more confirmation. I asked "Is that your house?" He said "Yes... Took me damn near 20 minutes to crawl out." That convinced me. You could still hear the fireman, state trooper and two woman yelling his name into rubbish and I got to be the one to inform them James was ok. I ran back yelling "I found him, I found him. He's OK!" You should have seen the look in their eyes. I asked James if I could take him to the hospital. In a completely aware and calm demeanor he looked me in the eye and said "I'm not going to the hospital." How's that for grit?
"There's a house up there?" is probably the most terrifying shit to hear when you're looking for someone
Yeah agreed
It definitely is
For sure
I couldn’t freaking imagine how that would sound...
@@astrohaterade Yeah. That's so scary
When Hank is on the case, I heard the relief on the deputy's face.
This reply received a lot of backlash. Okay, I'm sorry, I phrased my joke wrong. I wasn't thinking. My joke came off as rude and sometimes that happens with me. 'I *heard* relief in the deputy's *face* didn't sound right to me so I commented on that. But that joke was incomplete and sounded rude. Sorry again. I hope I didn't offend the commenter. It was meant to be a lighthearted joke but obviously wasn't seen as such. It was not my intention to sound rude and stupid. I tried to make a dumb joke, that's all.
I hope I didn't offend the commenter. If I did, sorry, I didn't mean it =(
@@ender4344 Tornados definitely don't take our situations into account and, yes, one can easily *_hear_* *_relief_* in someone's voice, especially in such high-tension situations! In fact, "to hear the relief in someone's voice" is also a very common phrase; I'm not even sure why that was pointed out and laughed at.
@@killerlalu1 I think he meant because original post said they can hear it on the face. Idk
Sheriff: "what are you a weather guy?"
Hank: "I'm THE weather guy"
@@ender4344 like killerlalu1 said, that's a common phrase often used. I don't know why it's funny to you. People take on a tone when they are relieved that something is happening or isn't happening. Listen to the tone of someone's voice and you'll clearly hear relief in it when in a questionable situation. You have a weird sense of humor if you think that's funny.
You know, when everybody else is tooting their own horns about how caught all the footage first, I can’t help but think: ‘yeah, could be because Hank has stopped to dig somebody out of the rubble’.

If you watch storm chaser videos is it pretty common for chasers, firemen and law enforcement to linkup and start clearing houses on the spot or directing traffic. No one asks for credentials, just get to work.

Indeed; this is one of, if not the most raw video I've seen him throw on YT.... Near the end you can really see his thoughts and passion and empathy. He always has this, normally in a subdued and controlled fashion but it was crazy to see him slightly on the brink there. Especially since he damn near drove INTO a forming tornado like two days ago! @@jgerdinggmail One thing about Pecos Hank, too, is that he doesn't do a bunch of screaming, and losing his head about things like this. I like this guy! He's easily my favorite Storm Chaser, too! Excellent point. The civilian world is filled with people that have many years of training in various fields that are entirely applicable in emergency situations. There are world class divers, volunteer firefighters, electricians, loggers, contractors that have heavy equipment, the list goes on. I even know many people that are trained as EMT'S for the sole purpose of just being ready to help others.
The civilian assets within a community are often initially overlooked when an emergency situation is occurring. I can understand why in many cases because there are also those that have nothing to offer a situation, but they still want have a look at what is going on.

God bless you for being a darn good guy.
I don't know what it is, but I find something so compelling about the part where Hank pulls up to the officer. At first you can hear the authority in the officer's voice telling Hank to turn around, and then his entire tone changes almost immediately as he asks Hank to help out in the situation.
I think this officer was really overwhelmed by the situation (I mean, besides a seasoned storm chaser, who wouldn't be). Just knowing someone that knew what was going on with him must have been an immense relief.
@@LillaVya Oh absolutely. Not only is he overwhelmed, but he likely lives in the community he is serving so he is going to be extremely worried for his own loved ones and greater community. Like you said, it had to be a huge relieve to be able to see right where the storm was and where it was heading.
@@dacypher22 Yes, and the police officer has to clarify that he is a storm chaser. Showing up the radar and pointing on where the hook is, where it's going and if there is a tornado, helped the policeman know who is a storm chaser and who's not.

I've lived in Mississippi for 20 years now and never experienced the force of a tornado. After hearing what happened on Easter Sunday, it became real for me on how tragic these natural disasters can be. The next Sunday after that, we had two tornadoes to hit my home town of Tylertown. My family heard what sounded like a constant thunder roll close by and looked outside to see a green mass of clouds in the distant, swirling at the top since the trees covered the rest of the funnel. I am thankful that our house didn't get damaged, all we had was a few trees pulled over and hail. That was the first time to experience something so horrifying yet beautiful at the same time. My thoughts go out to all of those who were affected these past few weeks, and to you Hank who documents these disasters to educate and also help those who were need. Thank you for all that you do.
Literally in tears right now because of James, a guy I dont know. I hope he and others affected are taken care of by friends and the community.
Thank god james is ok. I couldn’t imagine going through a scenario like that. People are defiantly stronger than I am.

I was watching this on my phone on radar. I never thought this would happen, but I literally broke down in tears. I am getting chocked up writing this comment. I was talking to my friend who was also tracking this storm and staring in awe at the EYE that was inside the hook, and to think that as this beast went over Bassfield and then toward Laurel. To see this go over tiny towns and knowing that at that moment people were losing their lives and everything they had was so depressing and heartbreaking. To read the tornado emergencies gave me chills down my spine the likes of which I've never felt before. To anyone effected by this I'm so so sorry for what you have gone through. My condolences.

same here but with what went down in atlanta, there were about 3 tornadoes and apparently about 20 or so died, it was about 2-3AM when all of this went on but miraculously the areas around where i were weren't hit, though a few areas in my county had no power due to strong winds

We know from his previous work that Hank is a premier documenter and photographer of violent storms and a gifted video producer and musician. Here we see another side of him that sets him apart from some chasers: his readiness to immediately put the well-being of those hurt and frightened by the storms above every other concern. Another who does this is Daniel Shaw of Severe Storms Australia, who went through rigorous training as a fully qualified first responder, carries emergency medical supplies, and always immediately stops chasing to begin search and rescue, interfacing with local authorities to get aid to victims as soon as possible when a storm passes through. Many storm spotters play a vital role in communicating the movement and development of violent storms so that public warnings can be fast and accurate. Some, like Hank and Daniel, go even further.
These hidden Mississippi wedge tornadoes were horrifying and unforgettable for everyone affected by them. I'm glad Hank was there to help that officer and those dazed and injured people with tornado location and help after it passed.

I like your Milky Way profile picture! Wonder how many planets are out there with this going on right now 🤔
I'm addicted to your videos, you are by far the best storm chaser, animal saver, people finder, camera man, teacher I've ever seen, you deserve way more recognition, every town needs a Pecos hank. Much love brother
Seeing you so shook up makes you special from a lot of storm chasers. For you people go first, shots go second. You got heart man, never lose that!
Well done stopping to help out Hank.
You're a good man and you do what you do for all the right reasons.
My uncle lives in Mississippi 😞 his home was damaged because of this tornado. Everyone made it without injury, but what a crazy way to spend Easter.
I'm glad your uncle is okay, and I hope the home can be repaired soon. Blessings from Indiana.
This may sound crazy, but I think that G-d's love was shown through the people who responded to give aid and support.
I’m glad you and James were both alright! Hope everyone is staying safe out there!
That just made me burst into tears. Be safe Hank, and thank you for what you do.
Wow! Wow! Incredible...it’s a miracle that James came out of this alive! Thanks for sharing this with us. Amazing footage you got!🙂👌🏼💜
Wonderful job, Mr. Hank. James, you're living proof they make 'em tough down there.
My house was destroyed by these 2 tornadoes. Let me give you a first hand experience of the true terror this was. We were under a tornado warning which was the 1st tornado, which grew and prompted a tornado emergency, which is a tornado warning except the tornado is literal hell. Our roof was blown off of our house but we were in the basement. We got out of the house and tried to call family, no service. We had no way of calling. And we had no way of knowing that there was a second tornado right about to get us. As soon as a police officer came up and told us that there was a tornado coming we said "it already it" and he said "oh, I know about that one. But this one is about to hit. Do you have shelter?" To which we replied "a basement but the house above it was partially destroyed" and he said "that's no good, get in" and he took us away from our house to a gas station where we could call family. Later that night we returned to nothing. Our house was not even there. We got a call the next day (yesterday while I'm writing this) from an unknown number in alabama saying they found one of my moms prescriptions in their backyard in Montgumery, Alabama, which is more than 100 miles from our house. Right now we're staying with my aunt in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Kyle Wheeler wow, i can't imagine how awful that is
Holy crap man :( that's a hell of a thing to take in, thank god that officer knew what was coming and could assist. I hope you're having luck getting things sorted out, that's gotta be a nightmare coming back and having no house. Take care
I’m so so glad the officer was there to take you to safety! At least your health is there despite everything going on in the country
I looked at the warning for this storm and saw "tornado emergency" then I looked at the velocity radar and saw that. After seeing that velocity radar my stomach sank and I just said "this is really bad." Pray for those impacted by this storm
Dude this was one of the most violent storms I've ever tracked on radar. It nearly takes my #1 spot
Wow! You must have been saddled between fear and amazement. Thank you for being so kind. We need more people like you. Stay safe.
The authenticity in your videos are captivating.
Wow! That's about all I can come up with. So glad the gentleman could walk away from that. Thanks Hank for what you do. I will always be a fan of yours.
Just when we thought 2020 couldn’t get any worse... my heart goes out to all Americans, must be a scary time to being into the tornado season with the way Covid-19 has affected our way of life. These tornadoes proved how much more dangerous it is to be living in tornado alley with these kinds of restrictions in place. Stay safe ❤️ love from Australia.
Thank you my friend! We're hanging on the best we are able. We're adapting one day at a time. I'm sending you love from Alabama, USA 😍.
"Just when we thought 2020 couldn't get any worse" so did you forget that tornadoes and hurricanes existed? Lol 2020 is not getting worse, April is when the Weather down south is the most active. It's nothing new, lol.
Actually if anything, the social distancing is keeping more people in the safest place to go during tornadoes; indoors. No one would want to face tornadoes without either interior walls or a basement to shelter in, especially when a twister is strong enough to flatten a building. Better to have to crawl out of a destroyed structure than be tossed like a ragdoll or pelted with shrapnel.
Thanks from Iowa, I hope you Aussies are recovering well from the bush fires
Thanks, love from Soso
I was waiting for this upload! One of my favorite channels on youtube! That said, this must have been so terrifying for everyone involved. My heart breaks for those who experienced loss in this event.
Just came across your channel... Tornadoes have fascinated me for as long as I can remember (I'm now 40). Some people think it's weird but I look at it as mother nature demonstrating how amazing she truly is. Thank you for the great videos, it's really appreciated. Stay safe!
I love the fact that Hank is one of the few who show the dark, but human side of these storms. Respectfully of course. Thank you.
Hey hank, watching your videos is helping me get over my fear of severe weather, I just wanted to say thank you
Glad it helps Riley.
Great vid; great story. Glad to see James is alive and strong.
I keep having this feeling that this is going to a hellish tornado season like 2011. I hope I'm wrong
HeavyHarris yeah we may be in for part 2 on sunday
I'm having the same feeling. Hopefully people take their warnings seriously.
These storms are being spun up from hot water in the Gulf of Mexico. This as an AGW signal, so yeah record years most years for the next 100 years is likely on deck. At some point, large parts of the states in Tornado Alley will be deemed uninhabitable due to the near-constant destruction. It's a slow-motion train wreck, but it's still a train wreck.
@@JORDANLEWISFILM I literally said the same thing to my husband about that. It is just going to do it on the weekend again.
The Case For Mutiny honestly Tornado Alley should’ve been blocked off from being lived in once people knew tornadoes regularly occurred
Same system hit Chattanooga. My sister and her family live in the holly hills subdivision and took a direct hit. Luckily they walked out of the house without a scratch. It’s one thing to watch these videos to witness the damage, but it’s a whole other thing to walk up and down a street and see it for yourself. It’s mind blowing.
Love the videos Hank! Keep em coming!
Hank, thank you for the service. Praying for your safety, service and weather advancement. God bless.
I live in South Carolina and when I heard about the storms coming, something gave me a bad vibe. It was warm and windy. Clouds looked gray and I was telling my assistant manger, "Dude, I got a bad vibe. This is twister weather." Sure enough I see the reports for these tornadoes late that Sunday night. Next morning I hear two touch downs on the government property close to were I live.
Man, that was one crazy Easter!
EF-2 hit upstate SC 2 miles from where I'm sitting as the NWS warned two minutes before, and as I was trying to determine the location by radar. Happened so fast that the lag of radar was no help to me. Nowhere to go, just sit here watching how the winds were blowing the trees around hoping for the best. One man was pinned under his trailer for awhile but he'll recover physically it seems. I'd been watching the system for over a day and knew the possibilities, just glad it wasn't worse for us- it sure could have been.
A tornado in my area in southeast TN was an EF 2 or 3 that struck 1 minute away from me. I don't know how many miles, but it hit towards 2 other neighboring towns.
Yea. The weather is really eerie and you can just sense it. I live in N.C. and I was once at work when one hit at night. Luckily no one was injured but it did tear part of the roof off and destroyed several factories in the Industrial park. The smell and the feeling afterwards is eerie/scary.
Heartbreaking...thankful he made it out of that horror. 😢
Ah, man! As soon as the outbreak was forecasted I knew you would be making atleast one video. I live in south carolina and we got 8 out of the system along with some serious wind gusts.
The emotional toll was obvious Hank. Thank you for what you do, by warning others when able and sharing knowledge. You wear your heart on your sleeve and it's a beautiful thing to see sir. ♥️
The way 2020 is going, this is gonna be a horrific tornado season. Stay safe man!
