How to fix: Failure Configuring Windows Updates on Windows 7

- If your Windows 7 computer is trying to install updates when you shut it down, but always fails to install them, this video will help you.
The commands you'll need to stop the services (press Enter after each line):
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver

Addendum; My computer reverted back to the same annoying problem after doing a Windows update. I solved the problem by choosing ‘Never check for updates ‘ in Windows Update Settings (Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 7 years ago anyway), completing the whole process again and deleting the ‘.OLD’ files. Success at last. Thanks again.

Had to use the run commands to stop windows updates whilst the 'Restoro' programme ran. Do these services need restarting again after the process, and will they provide new updates based on the newly acquired files from Restoro

Partially helpful as my updates were stuck at 35 percent even in safe mode. It's a mess. If I get through that 35 percent screen and the clean up I will let you know how I make out. Good video, great presentation skills.

I have been having this issue with Windows 8.1 where it gets to 99% and then has to revert changes! Can I use this same method? I ended up Refreshing my Notebook to Windows 8 and now it is stuck on Windows 8!

Sir I have a some problem related with offline win7 sp1 update. X32 bit os.
When I run this file then few minutes later restart automatically and it is common also but that moment screen appears messages like configuring update do not turn off power. Something like this it going to 30% and then restart my PC. Now when start my PC then show again this message windows configuring do not turn off. Like this message but few minutes later configuring service pack percentage completion going to 100%.
Now this message shown failure configuring update reverting error. And finally my windows sp1 update patch failed.
If I click on windows update or check for updates their also same problem. Windows find the online update .Download, install, configuring after reboot again configuring and finally failure configuring service pack reverting changes do not turn off your computer.
Why....

couldnt complete the "net stop cryptSvc" says it was in use.
also couldnt complete the step of changing the name of the "catroot2" file. said it was in use.
it did work anyway. i had to install one of the updates twice. then i had to restart pc (& it did its own restarts as well) several times, like 5 total. it finally got finished with the last update and i checked to see it didnt keep doing the strange rebooting thing anymore at start up. fixed!

thank-you. I just installed open shell windows 7 start menu on my computer which has windows 10. Will I have problems updating? Will the updates try to change back my start menu system and the way the documents come up on my screen? I love the old way! Your video was very clear (in case I need it)
Open-Shell is installed as a user, meaning it won't get completely removed if an update happens. It can get broken if a feature update does something that the Open-Shell devs didn't expect, but if that does happen, the devs are usually really fast to fix anything that breaks.
TL;DR, probably won't break from updates.

Hi mate,
I have laptop lenovo z40 with windows 8 ( original copy ) , I saved the recovery files on USB drive then did format the laptop and install windows 7 (trial copy) , now trying to restore the original win 8 but the laptop does not boot from the USB.
Is there any way to restore windows 8 or trying Ultra iso to write disk image on USB ??
I would try to find out whether the problem is with the laptop booting from usb in general, or if there’s a problem with the usb drive you made.
See if you can get another usb stick and use a friend’s computer to install Windows 8 on it from the Microsoft website.
Then see if your computer will boot from that USB.
Then if it works, you can install Windows 8 from it. It will just be missing a few Lenovo programs.
If that usb fails to boot, then it may be a general problem with booting from USB.

What do you do if you are stuck with the blue screen saying "Configuring Windows updates. 35% (or even 100%) Do not turn off your computer. I did a Disk cleanup and this followed. :(

My advice is to leave it on that screen for as long as you can. It may well be putting things right, and you could do harm if you turn the computer off.

I had a related issue with windows apparently stopped on 35% of configuration. I waited and waited but still stuck on 35% after 30 minutes. I tried rebooting about 5 times always returning to configuration at 35%. So at the automatic launch screen where no key board commands work I pressed multiply keys repeatedly untill the automatic countdown timer counted to zero and briefly it launched a different window image then returned to configuration at 35%. Time for a coffee. About 4 minutes later it passed the configuration stage with out a word and went to 'Cleaning Up', Do not turn Off Your Computer'. That is where I am at present at 23:06PM GMT Tuesday 25th February 2020. Point is it required about 1 hour to get to where it got to. The spinning spinnor is stilll spinning and it still looks hung or in progress. I do not know. It just says 'Cleaning Up'.
Maybe I asked it to do too much at a time when I wanted to use the computor. See, I was cleaning about to launch 'Clean-Up' when I found the updates and decided to click on that as well. 'Clean-Up' said it could clear 32 gigs of junk and temporary files.
23:14PM. It cleared. Whoopi! Wow what a long time being locked out. Point is. It may require an hour at least and show little progress. Good luck. TY.
