    I used to style my hair and wear a mustache in an attempt to look like Tom Selleck. I do not think I achieved this. Only two women ever told me that I looked like Tom Selleck. I recall I was in a bar on the night of the last Episode of Magnum PI starring Tom Selleck and I was watching that show, pretty much alone. A woman was waiting tables and had no one at the tables to look after, so she came over and started talking to me. She paid no attention at all to what was on the TV throughout most of that episode. FYI, the last episode of Magnum PI also starred Tim Rossovitch, the former NFL Football player. When Tim Rossovitch came on the screen, she became very interested in watching that guy. She said "WOW! That's Tim Rossovitch!" etc etc etc.

    Sometimes I think Letterman isn't 100% sure what direction(s) he wants to go with someone on his show. He knew the general subject matter he wanted to go over with Selleck, etc.-Letterman is always "ready to go", and all that in his shows. I think its just that Selleck isn't... He's not George Carlin, Robin Williams, etc. He's not that kind of guy. He's more conversational, more relaxed, etc. More like Harrison Ford, Dolph Lundgren, or, well, take your pick of most any straight, "leading" man... Tom Selleck isn't a "funny man". He doesn't do sex jokes, thankfully so. He's, in my opinion, a bit better of a man than David, actually, and David Letterman is actually a pretty decent guy. David just needs to take the "rapid fire" thing down a notch perhaps, with folks like Selleck.

    When he was magnum p.I., he was liked very much here in Hawaii until he gave an interview where he spoke of his lack of interest in his viewing public. You can imagine how that made people feel. He came across as so friendly and easy going but he wasn’t really. He probably never knew or cared how hurt people were by his statements. He just wanted his privacy. His later life showed the same attitude. John Goodman who was the father on rosanne was another one who seemed open and friendly and was very well liked but gave an interview where he said he had no interest in his viewing public. He likes his privacy too. He was acting in every interview until he got to that one.

    Back in the days when men were wearing high collars, and vertically-oriented collars, which look so much better than this low, small, spread collar crap everyone is wearing today.

    • @karlhungus5554
      @karlhungus5554 2 роки тому

      And how! I had to wear a suit for a job I had in the 90s and I wore these same high collars. They were either button-down on the collar points or they had the flap and button that went behind the knot of the tie. I thought (still think) they look much better. More style and class. Most clothing today is horrible. If you can find a man in a suit, they seem to have tight, skinny pants and tight jackets that look like they will barely button. I grew up in the 70s and 80s, but liked the clothing options in the 90s.

    • @HomeAtLast501
      @HomeAtLast501 2 роки тому +1

      @@karlhungus5554 Karl, you're only the second guy I know who understands this. The other guy is a friend of mine who is in his 60s, and who sold men's clothing for a living all his life, starting in the early '80s.
      This is really interesting --- if you look at video interviews with John DeLorean from, say, the '80s or '90s or later, he must have had custom-made shirts, and you won't believe how long the collars are, and they look fantastic.
      Regarding the suits today, I've noticed several things they're doing:
      - the jackets are falling like 4-5 inches shorter than they used to
      - the shoulders are much narrower than they used to be --- shoulders on a man's jacket should extend beyond the actual end of the shoulder and make the shoulder look boxy and broad and square. Today they are narrower than the shoulder actually runs
      - The sleeves are too short, which makes the hands look terrible
      - like you said, the pants are way too tight, and they emphasize the thigh. So if you look at a guy wearing a suit today their thighs look broader than their shoulders because they emphasize the thighs in the pants, and narrow the shoulders. It looks horrible
      - the pants don't rise high enough
      - the lapel notch should bear some relation to the corner of the shoulder - but they don't. If you look at older suits one of the lines of the notch will point directly at that shoulder corner, OR, the point where the two lines meet will create an angle that's aimed directly at that corner. And the new suits don't bear any relation. And it is unconscious for most people, but it looks much worse.
      - Then you have these short, wide, spread collars. The high, vertical collars create strong horizontal and vertical lines that emphasize the horizontal and vertical lines of the man's face, which make the face look more geometric, and therefore more attractive and masculine.

    • @karlhungus5554
      @karlhungus5554 2 роки тому

      @@HomeAtLast501 Wow, those are fantastic and very astute observations! I appreciate you taking the time to share those details.
      Based on your guidance, I found a video of Dick Cavett interviewing John DeLorean in 1985 (ua-cam.com/video/qdObGCj_-jI/v-deo.html) and I'd never seen such collars. He looks smashing. He was already handsome, but his elegant attire just made everything better.
      Then, I found a 1981 interview (ua-cam.com/video/kZo8d-z4iCM/v-deo.html) showing him standing with a lovely suit and wearing a vest. As you noted, the jackets were longer. Of course, he seems rather tall, at least in comparison to the interviewer. So, perhaps that contrast lends to the effect. Either way, he was obviously well put-together.
      I always preferred cuffed trousers with a mild break, but I was not/am not a fashion expert. It's obvious you have exquisite taste and the breadth and depth of knowledge on the topic.
      Reading your observations, I remembered that I would buy shirts with sleeves that would sometimes feel like they might be too long. But, when I would try a slightly shorter sleeve length, I really disliked the look. I felt the shirt cuff should extend a bit outside the jacket and fall right where the wrist meets the palm/hand and begins to widen. I didn't like the cuff going over the palm/hand, so, if needed, I would have the shirt altered to move the button slightly to tighten the cuff a bit. I also liked shirts with French cuffs -- especially with the contrasting collar and cuffs. It wasn't always practical for my job, but I really loved the look.
      I usually felt like I had weird dimensions. But, buying off-the-rack is imperfect, due to variations in people and the clothing. Had I the wherewithal, I would have happily had custom clothing made! Though most didn't understand this, you will get it: dressing with class and style in well-fitting clothing felt really good.I sometimes wore shirts with French cuffs. It wasn't always practical in my job, but I loved the look -- especially with the contrasting collar and cuffs.
      Times weren't perfect back then, but I'd still happily travel back in time if I could. In addition to nicer clothing, I remember many things being more pleasant. I suppose it's human nature to pine for the days of one's youth, but I do also struggle with many of the current events. Thankfully, there are kind folks like you that make the present times better.

    • @HomeAtLast501
      @HomeAtLast501 2 роки тому +1

      @@karlhungus5554 Karl, honestly, I figured all this stuff out on my own. I was just blessed with a strong visual sense, and I apply it to things like art, paintings, architecture and design, and clothing. So I don't even know if they have terminology to describe some of the concepts I'm talking about, but I do know that what I'm saying is correct.
      Regarding DeLorean, there is an interview online in which he is wearing one of his fantastic suits with western boots, and it just looks dynamite. I actually have been wearing western boots with suits since the early 1990s. I have made comments on some of the DeLorean videos that I think he was more of an artist than he was an engineer. If you look at his clothes, the designs of his cars, the house he owned in the Southwest --- the guy clearly had a nuanced aesthetic sense. I understand that after he got out of the car business he began designing watches.
      I wanted to make a comment about what you said about cuffs. You nailed it. Just like high collars look better, strong cuffs look far better. Strong cuffs add strong vertical and horizontal lines right next to the hand, and what that does is highlight the implied vertical lines of the fingers and the vertical bones in the hand, as well as the horizontal lines implied by our rows of knuckles. So it formalizes the implied geometry of the hand, and therefore makes the hand look striking. I'm a huge Elvis fan, and he had very nice hands, and I noticed that after sometime in the late '60s he NEVER wore short sleeves. I've seen only 1 photo of him in the '70s wearing short sleeves. I think he knew that good cuffs made his hands stand out. So in the '68 Comeback special you see him wearing those heavy, thick leather wrist cuffs. In the '70s his shirts in his personal wardrobe often had very tight cuffs, which made his wrist look long and emphasized the length of his fingers.
      I just looked, and if you go back to the Cavett interview that's where he's wearing the boots.
      I have 2 UA-cam channels. One is 11 months old, the other is just a month or two. But I have some videos that get into these issues. My video editing skills have gotten much better in the last 2 months, so some of the older videos aren't as good, and I might redo them. But for what it's worth, you might enjoy them if you're into this stuff.
      This video explains the aesthetics of lapel design. The image I use is a little small, and the video is a little long, so I might redo it. But here it is: ua-cam.com/video/IsZr6EkhqBc/v-deo.html
      This explains collars: ua-cam.com/video/tmpc0qYcmDI/v-deo.html
      This analyzes how some vest designs look better than others based upon certain characteristics, using photos of Elvis in vests to illustrate: ua-cam.com/video/RTtXjxknECQ/v-deo.html
      This one I just put up, and it shows how Elvis intentionally trimmed his sideburns in the '70s so that in profile the front line of the sideburn was parallel to his nose:ua-cam.com/video/8aqRBwGWyYg/v-deo.html

      @@karlhungus5554 Two more comments in reaction to what you wrote.
      You know how pants are very low rise these days, whether with a suit or just separate pants? I became so fed up with this that I began buying pants at places like St. Vincent DePaul, and I buy them 3-4 inches too big in the waist because this gives me the rise I want (to the top of my hips,. like in the '80s), and then I have a seamstress take in the waist and shorten the pants. That way I have full-cut, high rise, loose-fitting pants. I've gotten some fantastic pants at St. Vincent. I got a brand new pair of wool hounds tooth pants for $5, for example.
      Second, you mentioned the cuffs. When I get dress shirts with regular cuffs (not French), I actually reposition the buttons so they are tight around my wrist because it looks much better.
      I've actually never worn French cuffs, but I want to and plan on getting some shirts with French cuffs. If you look at pics of JFK when he was President, the French cuffs look fantastic.

    Dave when he was funny, before he turned far left and political. Not a fan of him now but back then, he was hillarious.

    I love the gorgeous Tom Selleck and the characters he played. I'm not a fan of his zealot religiousness or his disregard for Global warming with his water usage. That's a different subject.
