- Nissan has been making the Qashqai for a long time; this is its newest version and might be the best. That said, a new way to power this workhorse involves the petrol engine being used to charge a battery that drives the car. Sounds weird but it actually works and might be worth you looking at it

Not sure why this was described as more complicated than a typical hybrid - surely it is less. Only one drive train and (usually in this sort of set up) a smaller petrol engine than would normally be needed as it does not need to provide the same peak power. When I first heard about hybrids (many decades ago) I assumed this was how they worked. I was astonished to discover they actually drive the wheels directly from the engine AND drive a generator AND drive the wheels from an electric motor which seems way too complicated. It's much simpler to run a generator to make the electricity to drive the motor to turn the wheels, add a capacitor or battery to smooth out the peaks and troughs and you're done.
It's refreshing to see a comment that actually understands that the drive train in the e-Power is significantly less complex than the run of the mill hybrid setup. The Qashqai also has a variable compression ratio, which increases efficiency. There are a lot of disparaging comments about the e-Power from people who clearly don't have any real understanding of how it works.
Hope all goes well Bob for you, you were there throughout the Covid session with the Sunday Service for us all and helped us take our minds of the issues while you were bringing different topics each week and gadgets to improve sound and vision on your channel. It's great that you are not bought my certain car companies and can tell the truth which Hyundai didn't like after a certain Ionic review and they huffed and didn't let you test anything else since so it was their loss..... Thinking about you and family in the uncertain days with the big C.

The only thing that put me off this car is the Price. When I bought my Qashqai, it was extremely good value for money - all the toys, diesel engine, CVT gearbox, 360 degree camera - £17k cheaper than a standard VW Tiguan SE. Now this starts at £41,000 (£14k more, than my Diesel did).
Current prices in UK: RRP £27,120 - £41,655

I am wondering how long will the battery last while constantly charged and discharged. I guess it depends on the type of chemistry used and specific implementation, temperature management etc. but I am still curious about what Nissan has to say about it and what are the options if a failure occurs after the warranty has expired.
That was my thought too.
So, how does it work on, let's say, the Toyota Hybrid? Doesn't the battery get charged and discharged all the time on the Toyota? The battery on the Toyota system is 1.6Kw

Thanks, Bob. Shame they didn't provide a socket to make it a PHEV. Does it have any regen on breaking? Is there a drive shaft tunnel in the back seats? Price: 53K? You can get a Tesla Model Y for that, with a couple of extras and a small bit of change. No servicing costs, lower fuel costs, €120 per year tax.
What is it with the Japanese and their reluctance to make a modern EV? Synthetic petrol is a gimmick, which still burns and pollutes the air, noticeable in cities.

No servicing costs for the Tesla? I'm pretty sure that's fake news. Lower servicing cost I can accept, not no servicing costs. If they'd made it a PHEV, it would need a significantly larger battery, and that would add weight, take up more space.
It probably isn't for everyone, but that doesn't make it a dead duck. As a hybrid, it's a viable option.

Great review as ever Bob, only downside as I see it with this version of the Qashqai is quite apart from the price is that it's not as economical as it maintains to be, I think it manages around 45mpg which makes it no better than my diesel Kadjar. With that being said I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the new Renault Austral that your pal Nobby reviewed recently. Please look after yourself too you'll be in my thoughts and prayers for a safe and speedy return to full health.
I regularly get 62.4 mpg on our e-power qashqai. Driven intelligently, it's pretty impressive
Climate change, here in the Pacific North West Vancouver rain-forest, what is missing is the rain, level 5 drought (going into teh second year, last year we had state of emergency for drinking water supply), trees, bushes are dying all around us, climate change is here and it hurts to see all the damage it is causing our beautiful BC forest! I switch to EV over 5 years ago and am going solar doing my part! I just hope more people adopt EV's.

It’s not a concern. Hybrid batteries are designed for a high number of cycles. ePower has already been in Japan for 5 years so established tech

Wasn't the BMW i3 with a range extender the same principle? Not new from Nissan and a lot more expensive. Seems to be the worst of both worlds. All the best Bob with the treatment, my father had head and neck cancer many years ago but the knowledge and experience in dealing with it has moved on in leaps and bounds since then.
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the range extender drive the wheels through a gearbox?

Mmm, I'm struggling with that too...... Nissan missed a huge opportunity. They already had much EV experience, gained developing and selling the Leaf. The Qashqai was already a popular seller, yet they didn't figure that an EV version might just be a winner....... This car relies on petrol, which has no long term future......
@@Brian-om2hh Probably just a way of using up their old stocks of engines. Somebody might buy them. Especially those that don't have a clue about tech.
Really guys if you want an electric car there is the Ariya. Nissan has to sell cars before EVs take over. Besides they could be on a future tech in case we realize ev won't work for the whole world
Do you belive that everyone lives in thier own houses or in a rented apartment that offers charging in the outdoor parking lot? This is a vechicle like other hybrids meaning its a way to drive a petrol car with lower fuel consumption for those who cant charge a vechocle and thus cant have a phev or fully electric. I am in this category and i live in a rented house for 20 years now and there is no possibility to have electricity in the parking lot. And taxes are super high for diesels in sweden so a hybrid car makes the most sense. My current Kia Niro Hybrid is getting on my nerves with the 3 sec lag every time i accelerate and i tested the Qashqai E-power and it is a wonderful car to drive.
@@lazlo09 Life is about choices. I chose not to rent, but to buy my own house with a driveway. I also chose to buy an EV as it suited my lifestyle, as I could mount a charger on the wall.
If I didn't have that option, I wouldn't have bought an EV. But I definitely wouldn't have bought a hybrid.
They're a half-way house at best. Both inefficient, and expensive. So worse than a diesel and worse than an EV.
Surely there are carparks and supermarkets with low powered charges nearby, or even rapid chargers.
Most EVs only require charging once a week doing average mileage.
I thought synthetic fuel was cleaner when burnt than petrol.

Hi Bob. you are a real expert on cars, but I think you should tell people the real problems when buying an electric car, no 1 The price is crazy, no 2 it eats tyres because of the huge weight of the battery, no 3 in winter it does 30% less miles on a charge, no 4 depreciation is massive, no 5 if you don't have a home charger Diesel is cheaper, no 6 Hydrogen cars will be the big winner in 5 Years time and electric cars will be gone......please comment would you agree with what I said above..........my friend had an electric car never again he said crap.....

Hydrogen production produces significant amounts of carbon dioxide. There's very little green hydrogen production, and it's expensive.
The newish Civic works on the same principle I'm sure.

The civic has a gearbox, and the e-Power Qashqai doesn't have a gearbox.
The civic engine is connected to the driven wheels. The engine in the e-Power Qashqai isn't.
That is a significant difference. My sweet!
It isn't a question of which is best. It is simply a question of how they achieve their goals. The Honda is more aerodynamic, most probably lighter and very likely achieves a higher mpg. But in terms of similarities, the Honda has more in common with the Toyota Hybrid system.

I'm going to be one of those guys, Bob. Sorry. But what's the point? This thing doesn't have much of an advantage over a regular hybrid: fuel economy isn't all that. And, indeed, that means the emissions aren't all that.

For info: I believe these return about 42 miles per gallon.
Driven intelligently, it will easily return over 62mpg. Ours does regularly.
Didn’t BMW have this system in their I3 and eventually dropped it. Now sure why cause it worked perfect
I'm pleased to see that the UK government does not accept this car as an EV. It seems to me to be a complete waste of space, with a pathetic MPG .

@@Raw-Coffee-Bean My thoughts are that for all the additional engineering involved it is not much of an improvement on non 'E' cars, and hardly much of in incentive for buyers to spend their money on. It was , I believe, developed for other market places than the UK.
I would like to see the MPG of this car when driven 'normally' not intelligently.
@solentbum Plenty people report 45mpg, but I suspect they stay in E-pedal all the time. When we first got the car, the best I achieved was 48mpg. I was of the belief that maximum regeneration was the way to achieve the best mpg. I discovered through trial and error that it was not the best way to achieve a respectable return. I eventually discovered that D+Eco was the best way. Then, using D+ Standard on downhill runs increases the regen. On longer downhill runs lift and coast in D+ Eco loses little or no speed. It isn't difficult. It just takes a little thought. I am not a speed merchant, I drive within the law. It might not be for everyone, but it isn't the demon dog a lot of people claim it to be. Most critics who favour the Toyota Hybrid comment on the small battery in the Qashqai. 2.1kw from memory. The self charging Toyota Hybrid battery is 1.6kw. Odd that they think that is something superior.
Of course, if people lack intelligence, I'm sure it would be possible to achieve under 15 mpg.
As for additional engineering, I assume you mean an overly complicated drive train such as a gearbox? Well, it isn't overly complicated to do away with that!

So let me get this straight, Nissan have created a car which uses fossil fuel (big carbon footprint) to run an engine which charges a battery (big carbon footprint) to manufacture, to run an electric motor to drive the wheels?? Did any Nissan engineer actually study the laws of thermo dynamics?! Absolutely not so it seems. 😮
So, is a conventional hybrid any better? Or are all hybrid cars the same? The concept is a stepping stone to a full EV. The charging network isn't up to the job. Once it is this technology won't be necessary. It isn't even a new concept. There was Diesel Electric trains that worked on the same principle. The engine has variable compression ratios to increase efficiency. A lot of people out there are making huge statements trying to sound intelligent and well-informed, but they're clearly neither.
@Raw-Coffee-Bean A diesel electric train exists for a different reason. As each axle needs driven power it would be highly complicated to use a diesel engine to directly drive each wheel. The complex nature of gears / transfer boxes to enable each axle to receive direct power would be too impractical and costly to manufacture. For a train it's much easier to use a diesel engine to generate power for each axle via electric motors. Yes the laws of thermo dynamics means that each process will lose energy, but for an efficient train there's little alternative. However to use several processes in a car is not the most efficient method. The carbon footprint of an ICE engine driving the wheels directly is less than using an ICE to generate power for electric motors to power the wheels, and less stored energy is lost in the process.
@andyburnett8012 So, a CVT gearbox is more efficient than a direct drive from the electric motor? Sorry, I can't accept that theory, particularly when the CVT gearbox is inherently poor. As I understand it, the diesel electric train, the diesel element, was purely to run a generator. The generator powered electric motors that drove the wheels. I drive an e-power Qashqai daily and achieve over 62mpg. Mostly in D+Eco. D+Eco has the least amount of regeneration. Maximum regeneration is achieved in E-Pedal. Between those drive modes, there's Standard, Sport, and B mode. Intelligent use of these modes does deliver good returns. The e-power is a stepping stone towards a full EV. Once the charging network is fully available, the hybrid technology will be surplus to requirement. Maybe EV technology will also become redundant. Hydrogen creates a lot more carbon during production than most people realise. Green hydrogen production is limited. Ultimately, personal transport is probably doomed. Car ownership is probably doomed. Maybe Scotty will beam us up instead. However, in my lifetime, we have full EV or hybrid. Too many people are knocking the Nissan e-power without any real understanding or knowledge. Trying to sound superior but failing to achieve their goal.
@@Raw-Coffee-Bean Can't see where I wrote that anywhere? Having several processes reduces the efficiency of the vehicle. Thermodynamics. Not to mention the carbon footprint of producing an ICE, a battery pack, and an electric motor. Nissan are on their own with this one.
@andyburnett8012 Toyota do a hybrid as do many others. The Toyota Hybrid uses a 1.6kw battery. The battery powers the car up to 30 mph, and then the engine takes over. The electric motor after that point is only used to boost power for short bursts. All this is achieved through the CVT gearbox. Honestly, I don't get your logic. I'd put money on it that you've never driven an e-power. I'd also guess you have no background in engineering. I am a qualified motor vehicle technician to national craftsmen standard. I like to think I have an understanding of what goes on under the bonnet. I regularly hear people say they only get 40 odd miles per gallon with their e-power Qashqai. I'd be willing to bet the drive in E-pedal 100% of the time. I know what I have achieved in terms of mpg. So many people just don't understand what the concept is. Sad really, but hey, it's a big world, unfortunately it won't be here for ever.
