  • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗔𝗞𝗔𝗥 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝟯𝟬 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀! When it's almost time for the Dakar Rally again, I automatically think of these iconic television images of the Paris-Dakar rally from the 1980s. Watch this film footage of the 𝗧𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗼 𝗫𝟭 from Sky television. DAF Turbotwin X1 (1,220 hp) with Dutch driver Jan de Rooy jumping through the desert.
During the same rally things went wrong. The second truck, the DAF 95 X2 TurboTwin was crewed by driver Theo van de Rijt, navigator Kees van Loevezijn, and Scottish mechanic Chris Ross. During the seventh stage the 'X2' started to resonate at a speed of 180 km/h. As a result, the front bumper caught in the sand, causing the truck to roll over several times. Van Loevezijn was thrown out of the cabin, seat and all. He died on the spot. Van de Rijt and Ross were seriously injured and taken to the hospital in Agadez and were later transported to the Netherlands. DAF immediately withdrew from the Paris-Dakar rally.
