Oh by the way, technically Seto was the original welder of the Millennium Rod, who Kaiba is suppose to be a decendent of so it's not that much of a continuity error to be honest. Honestly the fact that the road in this game looks nothing like the actual millennium rod in the manga or anime is what is more concerning
@@IceshadeComets oh yeah good point there actually, I don't think the design for the Millennium Rod wasn't even finalized until the Battle City arc. Trying to remember if they even ever finalize the connection between Seto and Kaiba as well in DM, I don't think that was a thing till the Battle City arc as well
How did they already set up the Ancient Egypt counterparts long before Battle City? There's even design oddities such as pale Pharaoh and pale Priest Seto with hair before it was finalized in the Ancient Egypt arc
@Incone May They probably consulted Yugioh's creator for info and possibly at the time he had an idea for where the series was going, but probably changed his mind after he saw final product. Hashin looks like Jafar in a different outfit.
In regards to continuity: this game was released (or at least, it started development) before the manga reached Battle City; Ishizu and Marik hadn't even been mentioned in the story at that point. Allegedly, Kazuki Takahashi had to give early drafts of future chapters to the devs so they could somewhat craft the story around it so, in a way, you could see this game as a prototype of how the manga could have been.
Oh yeah he did in fact send chapters early because he was tired of the games messing up his story. The other thing though is this game also follows the Ancient Egyptian varients of characters and Kaiba was always meant to have the rod, but this was changed during the manga's run and Marik was given it in modern day instead. As a side note have to laugh he mentions rituals being bad given...they aren't...unless you're playing a non JP copy 8)
it's kind of insane that Forbidden Memories was allowed to be produced at all. It came out just a couple of weeks after the mystery of the pharaoh's memories was introduced in the manga and provides one very definite answer on the circumstances of the pharaoh being sealed in the puzzle. And while it's obviously not canon now, it's insane how much they actually gave away. This was very close to being the debut of the millennium rod, hence the proto-design, this is the first time Priest Seto was associated with the rod which would become important later in the manga, and this game introduced the notion that a world-ending demon would be released if all seven items are to be returned to their original tomb.
I am currently working on a Forbidden Memories video myself that’s more focused on telling the experience of taking me 20 years to beat it. It won’t be a review style video like yours but this video will definetly help me make sure my info is right especially when I have to explain the duelist’s strategies and any other important gameplay info I might miss or forget about in my own video. Thank you so much for making this awesome video!! Great watch and helps make my video even better!
What an incredibly exhaustive review, in a great way of course. You captured everything about the game! I didn't have the spirit for the final grind and when I saw Priest Seto 3 have Blue Eyes Ultimate, I threw up my hands. You're a stronger man than I.
It's about getting lucky. You need 3 Meteor Black Dragons, 3 Bright Castles, 3 Dragon Treasures and 3 Megamorphs. Having Raigekis, Widespread Ruins, Dark Holes, Crush Cards and Dragon Capture Jars to stall can help. Having Red Eyes Black Dragon and Meteor Dragon can help to because they fuse to make MBD. Of course, you don't NEED 3 copies of any of these cards but the fewer you have the worse your odds.
Despite this game being the bane of my childhood existence between me and my cousin's childhood, I still have a soft spot for this game, and it's great seeing how much content you were able to make with this game. I still want to try and beat it before I die to be honest.
You can beat it, the hardest thing about the game is getting consistent "TEC A/S" results after beating someone instead of "POW A/S" seen as technical wins are the only way to get good spell and trap cards, like dragon pendant, dark energy, ragieki and metamorphose. I had the same relationship with the game with my brothers, I don't even remember getting past the tournament as a kid, 🤣😂
I'll be damned, this was such a thrilling ride I didn't expect it to be this emotional lmao, good retrospective and congratulations for beating such unforgiving rodeo and prevailing to the end. Wish ya good luck on the future yo
40:28 As a speedrunner for this game I just want to make a slight correction. It's actually A-POW and S-POW that share the same pool and then A-TEC and S-TEC share another pool.
I would like to add something, since it went unmentioned in the review. The final four? Final Hishin, Final Seto, Darknite and Nitemare? Yea. They're 100% programmed *to cheat*, no cap. They will draw ANY card they want from their decks, see what you have on the field face down and in hand and will even change cards IN THEIR HANDS to something more advantageous if you don't somehow bait their AI. The game is a great atmospheric time and with mods, can help make it even remotely fair, but the game went _way_ too far in the wrong direction and it's honestly a shame, I'd have loved to see more on this alternative take to YGO that we never really see again.
What was the point of that. Did the devs really think a game that takes months to beat is fun. Because it took me two years and I quit on the gauntlet maze
Actually, this makes sense. Millennium item users cheating is completely canon. Hell, they straight up announce it in the anime and basically dare other people to call them on their cheating.
@wingedhussar1453 My guess is that without the ridiculous difficulty spike and the grinding needed to overcome it, the game would only be a few hours long.
That second phase in the true final boss fight has gotta be the biggest gut punch the game has to throw at you. I can only imagine… Many hours… Dozens of attempts… So…Many.. I just started a new save file on this, it’s one of the most nostalgic games ever for me. Definitely top 10 video game soundtracks ever imo, awesome video :D
Luckily now there is mods now like the 15 card drop mod to make the grind somewhat bearable. We also now have guides available so A/tec and A/pow is far more consistent making the grind even easier. I would advise anyone that wants to play this game, look for the 15 card drop mod version. I found this game a lot more fun with this mod.
GREAT video dude! I'm inspired to do something like this for a Brazillian audience, we still have a great fanbase for this game here but many of us don't have english as our second language
To anyone who wants to play forbidden memories but is afraid the absurd grind, there is a modded version of the game which is very popular in the speedrunning right now that makes each duel drops 15 cards, as ice stated at the end of the video, and suddenly 20 duels of grind equals 300. So if have some reservations about playing this game because of the grind, just get the 15 card mod version and I'm sure you'll have a ton of fun.
Wow, I nearly spit my drink when I got to 1:14. That’s a picture I took for a reddit post a while back asking if anyone had made official FM style rules. Can’t believe it ended up in a video. Lol
this is a game i was so scared to play because i knew of the grind, but i never got in my mind there is mods for it to just help the grind. so ggs, great work
I want to say this right now. I was so dead-set on not having to cheat to beat this game that I dueled Low Meadow Mage 996 times just to get 3 Meteor Black Dragons. I am certifiably insane.
And then I wound up cheating anyway at the final 6/7 because the game literally cheats you out of cards thanks to the lack of a PocketStation stateside and the fact that the enemies have 20 CARDS IN THEIR HAND late-game.@@IceshadeComets
So speaking of drop chances, back in the day a friend of mine also had this game and I swear he used up his lifetime's worth of luck one morning. His first time dueling Jono 2nd, he barely scraped the win and was awarded a goddamn Red Eyes Black Dragon. Wouldn't have believed it if I wasn't there when it happened. Meanwhile I spent literal weeks doing nothing with my free time but grinding Jono 2nd, who I could beat with ease, yet I never got a Red Eyes to drop from him. Oh well I have a full on Red Eyes deck in the Ps4 game and I don't care what people say about my favorite archetype, my fully set up Red Eyes Darkness Dragon with over 100k attacks points for proper overkill while my field is set up to counter or negate pretty much anything speaks for itself
I still play this game. I have well over 19 years of my life poured into this game, I'm 23. I still have my original copy of this game with the case, booklet, & memory card. Forbidden Memories are not Forbidden, They are admired, adored, honored, & remembered forever.
Just found this today hope you come back to do more of these videos even if master duel is out by now this game was not only my 1st ps1 game I ever played and thus my 1st ever video game on a console but god this was one hell of burtal game to start with
The grind on this game is insane. It's for this reason alone that if I ever feel like revisiting Forbidden Memories, I ONLY play the 15-Card drop mod of the game.
I kind of wish they kept some of the elements of forbidden memories for the series. In memory arc, yugi and friends get itsekaied to memory world and they just sort of bumble around with the hungry Egyptian guy until he unlocks his floating ability. I think it would've been nice if they became past counterparts or something and had to help Atem while inside palace instead of waiting by the palace door for the plot to happen.
My problem with the final arc was the reuse of Evil Bakura really just brought no tension to the scene. This villain had already been beaten several times before. I also just don't buy that he was the ultimate evil. I would have liked to have seen some or even all of the video game characters used for the final arc. The last arc of the original show was Rush Out the Door because the management told the creator to get on with their next project. I also don't buy into this either due to the fact that they had these video game original characters they could have used. Instead, they made new ones for what seemed like no reason at all other than to explain how the Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl, and Blue-eyes White Dragon came to be.
When I was a kid I figured out a way to multiply cards using three memory cards. I copied my save file to the second one. Then I started a new game on the third trading all the cards from second card to it and then trade them over to the first. I also did that with animals in Harvest Moon Back to Nature. 😅
Can’t wait for NDS era my favorite Till this day I still play Nightmare trabadour for goat format DM nostalgia 🪄 and 2011 for late 5DS synchro nostalgia ❤️ 🏍
Maybe you bring this up later but you mentioned the Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon requiring a ritual when talking about Kaiba but that technically isn't true. An actual Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon monster card does exist in the game and can be summoned normally like any other. It's been a very long time since I played the game and I only ever got the card myself using GameShark and I don't think it's possible for the player to get it without a cheating device but iirc several of the final opponents as well as Haishin during the forced loss in the early game can have that card in their decks and summon it normally. I've never seen it summoned through the ritual though
Did anybody else grow up with this game and use the best exploit ever? All you needed was 2 memory cards and to make it past the first part of the game to save to be able to do this. I used 2 memory cards to keep starting new games on one of them to trade all the starter equips and spells and any dragons and electric dudes to my main deck and then I copied my file and played 2 games (idk if you need to do this) to make the file "different" from the main in case it "detected" the copied save lol I was worried the game would catch me cheating haha. But yeah I copied the deck basically and had 3 of every good card I needed to win.
Should have did a 3D Battle against Nitemare, he has a unique theme there that makes an even better and more climatic final boss theme than Darknite's battle theme, shame they didn't use it as his dueling music instead (some mods do though, which works wonderfully).
Really fun video to watch This game one of the most good memories on my childhood and my friend But seriously the difficulty is no joke that many child on my playstation rental need to play this game in 1 save play to less the burden Even with cheat/gameshark the game still hard to defeat I don't really experience all playtrought but salute to all kids who defeat 80% of content just from shared information without knowing the meta or full tech of the game
I beat this game as a kid, but mainly because it was only ether that or DDS that I had to play. Forbidden Memories is one of the best Yugioh Games out there and Definitely the best of its time. The story drives you to challenge yourself through the game. Im sure most people will hate the farming this game requires of you, but I think it adds to the charm despite hurting repeatability as the game is segmented up into areas where you will have to stop and grind to powerup your deck to move into the next segment of the game, until you hit another wall, in some cases a Labyrinth Wall, only to realize you need more powerful monsters or better magic cards to enhance your deck. They always make sure you are never powerful enough to completely curb stomp opponents needed to progress so that you must get the best cards you can get and build a strategy around them to create a winning situation. If you grind enough and make the right deck you can even beat Heishin the first time! he will just challenge you over and over until you lose thought... Obviously thought the intention is a new player will get their ass whomped here and cant do anything about it, as not only do you need to know the game but need to waste alot of time farming on the per-tournament weaklings. it should also be noted if you miss any optional duels, you can restart the game loading a completed save and go through the campaign from the beginning chewing throught with your overpowered deck
Everyone who is interested in finding more about this awesome game is invited do join the FM discord ( even for attempting to speedrun it). We know so much about this game that it will make your mind blown away.
One thing I never hear mentioned is that cheat devices such as the Gameshark or Action Replay were common in this era. So although the developers of this game did a bad job with difficulty and balance, I wondered if they thought in the back of their mind that players would just cheat to beat the game. I beat this when I was young when a friend let me borrow his device. Though of course you can just beat the game normally too which is a great feat. I enjoyed talking about this game when we had limited internet access, we'd write the names of the monsters resulting in the twin thunder dragon, but one smarter friend quickly realized any dragon and any thunder would work. There's a lot of other ways to cheese the game too if you didn't have a cheat device - back then we realized that some of the starter decks the game gave you were better than others (we would talk to each other in school), yeah you can actually get that dragon buff card in the starter deck and some decks have very high amounts of dragons and thunder cards depending on your luck. Oh and I remember there actually is a duplication oversight too, if you had multiple memory cards and duplicated your saves using your PS1 it would duplicate your cards too and you could then trade them back to yourself because the game lets you trade cards between memory cards, so as friends in school we'd all duplicate our best cards to each other! It's so funny because even when we were all young without internet we'd still find ways to get through these games.
Great video! Decided to finally play this game for real after many attempts and I managed to finish the world tournament without much issue but the second half is hard and the gauntlet is absolutely insane. Restarted the game with the 15-card drop mod and even that took me several hours to get some good drops, but getting Megamorph seems AWFUL. No idea how I'm beating Seto 3 lol
My favorite bullshit game. I always loved this game but if you actually want to beat it it always resorts to like a thunder dragon deck, the only way I recommend playing this game is with a 10 card drop mod to make the experience much smoother. 10 card drops actually let you casually beat the game without too much grinding.
It took me I think whole 2 summers to try and beat this game. Not just a 100 hours .Got absolute shit drops after dueling so long with meadow mage. I didn't know about the drops at all but knew that the meadow mage gave the best ones on average. Now I lost many times to meadow mage and others aswell but I Wil say the best drop I ever did get was a Gaia the fierce knight.only issue was it was useless by then as I already have gotten somehow to the maze like duels which I couldn't belive it was even such a thing. How do you give us a hard character to beat then give us a harder character that is barely beatable and then without even able to save you have to go straight into the maze opponents and they have amazing monsters straight up .now I would beat one but then it was a maze so if you somehow did beat one you then had a choice to make and pick where to go and you didn't know where to go so you had to fight another one with a slim chance of winning. After this maze opponents I knew I would never beat the game because I couldn't get the drops and didn't know where to get spells.so I quit.
I still firmly believe that this game is the original timeline and with the Zorc arrival afterwards, the events of the anime begins.( I say anime since the manga is inconsistent
I got to beat a couple of the high mages without much grinding, just getting good timings on fusions and raigeki plays but the Forrest high mage really made me need to grind for cards which made it a little discouraging as I'm spoiled from modern games
I think the game should of been released in 2001 by Japan that way it would have been quite improved but Konami really went out and ruined our childhood the way they made things
I hated this game as a kid. I played the gba battle city one and it had you know rules. This on the other hand was a shit show of a game. To get better cards you had to grind. Also getting a game over just from losing 1 duel was some kind of cruel joke.
in the play station one the best way was to get a good card and clone it with two memory cards so you only need one of each. if you play emulator is a way to save state right before winning the game the game will change the drop for every time you do something different like attacking with a different monster of tra to fuse or activate spells . those things can chance the drop card so instead of play over and over you anly have to save state on the las two turns and u can do different combinations to win and be able to see like 4 5 different cards in one duel
this games only hard cause the AI literally cheats, especially heishin who will actually have 20 or so cards in his hand on his final fight or there cards in hand will magically change into shite like black skull dragon XD
Okay.. so hear me out. I’m grinding Jono 2 for a REBD. I’m on my 19th win and probably my 7th S POW rating. Instead of giving me REBD that I was hoping for… he gives me MBD. What is going on!? 😂
Every negative point is rendered useless because the music is tight as fuck

Then I started a new game on the third trading all the cards from second card to it and then trade them over to the first. I also did that with animals in Harvest Moon Back to Nature. 😅
Great video man. I watched this while I was grinding REBD from Jono 2.
Pulled a MBD.
That Josh is one hell of a luck charm...
Can’t wait for NDS era my favorite
Till this day I still play
Nightmare trabadour for goat format DM nostalgia 🪄 and 2011 for late 5DS synchro nostalgia ❤️ 🏍
great channel, more peaple need to see it
Maybe you bring this up later but you mentioned the Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon requiring a ritual when talking about Kaiba but that technically isn't true. I've never seen it summoned through the ritual though
great content
Did anybody else grow up with this game and use the best exploit ever?
All you needed was 2 memory cards and to make it past the first part of the game to save to be able to do this.
I used 2 memory cards to keep starting new games on one of them to trade all the starter equips and spells and any dragons and electric dudes to my main deck and then I copied my file and played 2 games (idk if you need to do this) to make the file "different" from the main in case it "detected" the copied save lol I was worried the game would catch me cheating haha.
But yeah I copied the deck basically and had 3 of every good card I needed to win.
Very Cool video IT deserve more views
Bruh, you definitely got lucky because Kepura plays Gate Guardian 9 times out of 10.
Me watching Seto 3 duel: Should have set widespread...
*Sees harpies feather duster*
Nevermind 😂
This is a really great video, you must have put many hours into this
Should have did a 3D Battle against Nitemare, he has a unique theme there that makes an even better and more climatic final boss theme than Darknite's battle theme, shame they didn't use it as his dueling music instead (some mods do though, which works wonderfully).
Really fun video to watch
This game one of the most good memories on my childhood and my friend
But seriously the difficulty is no joke that many child on my playstation rental need to play this game in 1 save play to less the burden
Even with cheat/gameshark the game still hard to defeat
I don't really experience all playtrought but salute to all kids who defeat 80% of content just from shared information without knowing the meta or full tech of the game
The Labyrinth Wall part caught me off guard.
10 card drops actually let you casually beat the game without too much grinding.
shoutouts to josh for megamorph
I miss this game.
B to F? B to D!!!
There 3 drop pools
BCD rank: Cookies
SA POW: Good ATK monsters
SA TEC: Good Spells, Equips and Traps
I still firmly believe that this game is the original timeline and with the Zorc arrival afterwards, the events of the anime begins.( I say anime since the manga is inconsistent
come one. we all know kaiba jacked up the millenium rod from marik to have an excuse to duel yugi
Future Tip: MBD is the easiest to get from Jono 2nd.
Please do a video on getting the monsters only obtainable via the PocketStation!
Not at all! Meteor B. Dragon is the easiest to get form Low Meadow Mage. It's a 20 from 2048. On Jono2nd is an 8.
Wait until you get to Reshef of destruction for the GBA, that's forbidden memories X10
22:30 that isn't Yami Bakura that's Yaoi Bakura lmao 😂😂
I got to beat a couple of the high mages without much grinding, just getting good timings on fusions and raigeki plays but the Forrest high mage really made me need to grind for cards which made it a little discouraging as I'm spoiled from modern games
Yugioh is perfect for a story based RPG that isn’t an anime retread
So, what your saying is that the game isn't hard; you just need to grind until the game gives you the cards you need to win.
Got it lol.
cant wait for the gba games
IDK, I think this game has the fastest duels in the series. At least if you are going for S-Pow.
Good vid
1:31:40 Is this a real card?
probably only in Japan
1:22:17
Correct me if I'm wrong but did you say Herpies? XD lool
The wonders of pronunciation LOL
If you new Mia has mbd in her deck it rare buy I have been hit with that surprise. Just like that one villager has summon skull
I'm technically in this video. Pog.
I love Yu-Gi-Oh!
Why didn't you just get the fusion materials for B. skull meteor dragon? Also a couple raigeki's would have really helped.
Idk I feel like Duelists of the Roses was the most atmospheric
I think the game should of been released in 2001 by Japan that way it would have been quite improved but Konami really went out and ruined our childhood the way they made things
Make a video on duelist of the roses 💎💎💎
You can defeat heishin there is unique dialog but god is it hard...
I'd love a locals or an online format where we play a reformed version of this game... maybe banning the crazy beat sticks
Hopefully you named the Pharaoh Atem
You can see in his gameplay bits he named the Pharaoh "Ice"
so many hours as a kid spent trying to beat this game, and i never beat it lol
I hated this game as a kid. I played the gba battle city one and it had you know rules. This on the other hand was a shit show of a game. To get better cards you had to grind. Also getting a game over just from losing 1 duel was some kind of cruel joke.
Yeah it’s outrageous for how many men lose means they die I’ve been there myself
in the play station one the best way was to get a good card and clone it with two memory cards so you only need one of each. if you play emulator is a way to save state right before winning the game the game will change the drop for every time you do something different like attacking with a different monster of tra to fuse or activate spells . those things can chance the drop card so instead of play over and over you anly have to save state on the las two turns and u can do different combinations to win and be able to see like 4 5 different cards in one duel
Your explanation on the mechanics for summoning THTD were a bit off, but yay THTD I suppose
this games only hard cause the AI literally cheats, especially heishin who will actually have 20 or so cards in his hand on his final fight or there cards in hand will magically change into shite like black skull dragon XD
To anybody asking this isn't cannon
I bet this is less grindy then the pay to win modern online games
Okay.. so hear me out. I’m grinding Jono 2 for a REBD. I’m on my 19th win and probably my 7th S POW rating. Instead of giving me REBD that I was hoping for… he gives me MBD. What is going on!? 😂
Just grind for MBD fighting Jono 2nd. He drops it quicker
I never could beat this game when it came out (the second half is just plain BS lol). I do recall and Black Hole were a godsend in it!
Wait what Nitemare has a card of himself?
And that's why you use the hack rom for more cards drop
When's the next tugioh vid?
Soon!
