I haven't run into that problem yet. You can try restarting your iPhone to see if that helps.

When the Podcast is playing, tap on the name of it in the bottom of the screen. More details should pop up and the 1x etc should be in the lower left corner.

I have a 7 plus and for the life of me my iPhone looks like the above. However first I had to wait for my phone to shut down just to get the screen that looks like the screen your showing however there is no 1x etc.
The iTunes podcast has no buttons
Nor does my podcast list open up. So frustrating, sounds like the chipmunks
