- As I’ve been digitizing a box of old DV tapes, it’s clear that some tape rot has set in on a large number of tapes, resulting in some digital “garbage” on the right side of the screen. I’ve tried multiple playback devices, cleaned their playback heads, to no avail - it’s definitely on the tape and not a symptom of the playback hardware.
So, I’ve uploaded this test and would love some input from people. I’ve cropped the same short clip of one of the MIB ride vehicles, demonstrating three different cropping techniques.
OPTION 1 is completely uncropped, showing the full extent of the digital errors but retaining the original 4:3 aspect ratio.
OPTION 2 is the most severe crop but uses all of the available “good” image, resulting in a nearly-square aspect ratio.
OPTION 3 maintains the original 4:3 aspect ratio, which loses some of the image on the top and bottom of frame.
Each has their pros and cons, and I’d love for folks to watch this video on their various devices (laptops, tablets, phones, TVs) and see what seems the most watchable. As I post new vintage material (of which there will be a LOT this coming year), I will probably post videos that repeat the footage twice, once uncrossed with Option 1, and a second time with one of the other cropping options.
I’m curious as to what people would prefer to watch - seeing one of the “cleaner” cropped versions first, with the uncropped Option 1 following it? Or vice-versa (as in this sample)? And which cropping do you prefer?

I love this. As engineering (human factors) person, I loved seeing the usability tests of the ride vehicle prototype layouts to determine best spin, speed, etc. in the last video. And, the other original stuff.

Option 1, I don't like cropping and like to see the video for all it's worth. 3 feels too much cut out and 2 is too thin. I can bare the garble.
Sidenote, I still use a 4:3 monitor for one of my PC screens and would like you to start uploading as true 4:3 instead of rendering in 16:9 as it makes 4:3 monitors squish the image leaving a black box around it.
Option two I think....the near 1:1 doesn't bother me, saves you time if you want to upload on IGTV :p
