12GA 00 Buckshot Pattern at 100 Yards- Benelli Nova 12 Mod Choke

  • What does the spread look like from 12ga Buckshot at 100 yards? We tested out this Benelli Nova 12 at 100 yards with 12ga 00 buckshot. The spread was really wide, some of it hit the ground and some even hit the steel target six feet to the right. Some did make it on the target though. Probably not useful for long engagements.

I tested buckshot from a Mossberg with an 18” cylinder bore barrel across a lake. I aimed level at about 6’ above the water and watched where every pellet splashed down. I expected a random pattern with every shot but was surprised to find the patter was similar every time. One pellet dropped off about 200 yards out every time, and the rest made it around 300 or so. I used to carry buckshot for bear protection but switched to slugs when the grizzly population started booming in Alberta. A rifle is probably a better choice but we have strange carry laws here.

I have a Remington. 1187 with a 30-inch barrel and using a modified chock with 3-inch magnum 00 buckshot I have taken many deer 100 yards and over with them running as I was hunting with deer dogs. you learn over time how to lead a deer depending on how fast they are running and also to shoot above them for longer shots. This depends on a person that has patterned their gun and what chock it uses the best with the shells they are using to hunt, and you need to know the gun you are using because they each have their own personality as I like to call it because two guns the same model may not be the same when it comes to how they shoot or hold a pattern.

    If I remember right,
every double aught BB is the same size as a 9mm round (roughly)
Ussually There are at least six pellets in every double aught shell.
You do the math...like getting hit with six 9mm rounds all at once.
A shotgun slug is accurate to 200 rounds in the hands of an average shooter.
it will farther then 200 yards, but will start to drop rapidly.
Oh, and if you think your safe from a slug behind anything other then a 1l2" steel plate...your Not....This is why slugs aren't recommended for a go to load in home defense.
A slug will go through multiple walls targets, etc.
    Know your target.
Honestly, if a person only had one firearm...a shotgun is an all around great firearm.
    Target fun.
    Hunting...any animal....any size...variable ammunition Loads.
    Defence.
It will hold its own in any situation.

Federal 00 buck with the "flight control" wad will put all 9 pellets in the "A" zone at 50 yards out of an 18" cylinder bore. I haven't checked it at 100 yards.

    • @1997LT1Camaro
      @1997LT1Camaro 6 місяців тому

You are correct. The wad behind the pellets in flight control is advanced to provide stability similar to a rocket with fins. It stays with the pellets way longer keeping them closer and more stable. It’s good to test out buckshot at your given defense range to see if it provides what is acceptable. I own AR/AKM and shotgun is my preferred home defense. You will never get legally attacked by 2 buckshot rounds vs 18 9mm rounds by a court. It’s way more deadly.
Another option is the buck kicker x full choke with standard 00 buckshot. It keeps the pattern similar to flight control with cheaper ammo.

  • @alanrawson-wg8io

Smaller lighter buckshot is hell on wheels out maybe 50yds or so. Problem is that it’s velocity falls off faster and that hurts the penetration. Tighter chokes don’t always give tighter patterns with big shot . I think a choke made for steel shot which I believe has a more gradual forcing cone in modified would work best.

@@BattlefieldCurator IIRC, I read an analysis by British military (this is like 1920ish. I read it in an actual book) on using buckshot. They concluded that for their purposes they preferred #4 buck because the object was to get a hit, any hit, on the target.
I think the analysis was in the context of jungle warfare. So, maybe the objective was to hit through brush and wound or incapacitate. It might have been in the context of suppressive fire.
For me, I had a really good combat shotgun but sold it. I now have a coach gun and a couple of bird guns, all in 12. I load my own buckshot.
I wish I still had my combat shotgun. I am probably going to bite the bullet and drop the money on a good 870. I grew ip in the day when you could buy a good “riot” gun for a $250. Sucks being me.

That's 4-5 shots on target no wider than a foot at 100yards... I'm curious to see that 150 yards looks like. I call that a good spread for 100 yards imo. Now add more accurate buckshot that stays together for longer and that's why the shotgun is my go-to for home defense.
