Crackle Back Showdown Round 1: Vintage Pam D vs. MPC Study Deck

  • There seemed to be some interest in seeing my vintage Pam D Rider tarot deck up against a couple contemporary decks with similar backs: AGM's "The Tarot of A.E. Waite" and a print-on-demand deck available through Make Playing Cards under the name "Study Deck for Tarot Course." In this first round, we pit the vintage deck against the Study Deck.
As I mention in the video, the Study Deck was made by Parkson Kwok using some barely re-touched images of collector Kenji Ishimatsu's copy of Pam A. Kwok largely left these images uncorrected unless a card was very damaged. For example, Ishimatsu's Pam A has a small portion of the 3 of Pentacles card missing. Kwok patched that with art from other cards to make that unnoticeable. The final result is a deck that is about as close to a copy of Pam A as most of us are likely to get.
How does this Pam A copy hold up to a real D? Let's find out!
You can find Kwok's study deck here: www.makeplayin...
You can see scans of Ishimatsu's Pam A here: muzendo.jp/blog...

Oooh you are SO lucky to have a vintage crackle backs, I can only imagine owning a deck that’s almost a century old. Thanks for this video Melissa, looking forward to the series very much. 🙏🏼❤️

It was an incredibly lucky find, and I definitely feel blessed and honored to be its custodian for now. Hopefully it will outlast me!

This was great, Mellisa. I have a Pam B which is a very different palette (pale greens and darker reds which I love) but fun for me to follow mine along with these two of yours. Sort of an A B D comparison. Your "D" is stunning! I have ordered the Study deck and it's arriving this week. Yeah! Anne

Thank you so much! If you feel up to it, I would *love* to see a walkthrough of your B deck. There's very little presence of the historical Pam decks on UA-cam. You'd be surprised how many people have messaged me to ask "can you do a walk through of Pam A/B/C?" and, well...no. I can't. I don't have those decks. :) I hope you enjoy the Study Deck! It's one of my all time favorites.

@@melissazupan6026 Thanks, Melissa. I don't have a youtube channel. Does UA-cam really need one more Tarot blabber? Present company excluded LOL Nor am i on Facebook or Instagram. Out of the loop for sure! If you ever want to see a bunch of the cards, i can email photos to you.

I was quite excited when I got the Study Deck some months ago, because I was looking for a copyright-free deck with a crackle back, but ultimately I was a bit disappointed because I found it a bit dark and not as sharp with the linework as the AGM A.E. Waite deck (still a favorite) and my all-time favorite the RWS 2.0 which has the sharpest and most defined line work of any deck I've yet seen (though it has amazing altered coloring, copyright info. and backs I don't care for).

I think we need to put our A.E. Waite's next to each other...I don't find that edition to be hyper clear at all. The black linework is decently sharp, but I've seen sharper, and the color work is so skewed. You can make out lithographic lines, but for my money those are easier to see in the Study Deck and the USG Centennial.

The link u provided doesn't opens melissa 😭 I want to see how does an original Pam A looked like. The market's overwhelmed by all sort of fake decks. What a disgrace, is there now way i can see the original copies of cards ?

I know! A few weeks ago Kenji's links stopped working. He's been told there's something wrong with the site, and I assume he's working on figuring out what that is. At the moment, I don't know of another source open to the public that shows the original decks.

If it has an actuality, on makeplayingcards at the shop of Condrad Steyn there are Pam Roses&Lilies , Pam A, B C and D deck copies.

It's an image I created. All you do is upload it to Make Playing Cards Custom Tarot Tin. I just made a video about how to do that, actually. The file for the image can be found in The Hermit's Cave Facebook group under "Files." If you e-mail me, I can also send it to you. My email address should be in my "About" section.
