Adi Shankara was the first to write commentary on upanishad teachings and its been a accepted by many of the intellectuals. Later on Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi has given his direct and simple teachings which can be understood without any commentary even by a person who has not studied vedanta methodically.
I appreciate the effort at maintaining intellectual honesty. Attempt at clarity and responsibility. The first and only requirement in pursuite of spirituality is earnestness - Nisargadutta maharaj. Proceed only, if it passes the screen of your "Vivek". Any internal conflict - cause for pause.
Actually, no writing can ever be "clear" in an absolute sense, just like no photo can have infinite resolution. Words are pixelated and incomplete entities, and if their speaker is alive, he could go on endlessly with clarifications. But a live person would exude something more than words, and that would put an end to the need for words. But when that person dies, "interpretation" is inevitable. Others would claim to provide the required clarifications, and create all mischief.

Rishis wrote clearly, accurately. People trying to read hidden, esoteric meaning are just being short sighted.
