- Did you know not all Scotch is smoky or peaty? In fact, that flavor only comes from 1 out of the 5 known regions of Scotland. There are actually five recognized geographical indications for Scotch. Each region and each distillery in the region varies in their water source, has its own style, and produces whisky of a distinctive character. So let’s explore them!
LOWLANDS
Lowlands scotches are traditionally triple distilled, but it’s not a requirement. Distilleries from here have a reputation for producing lighter-style whisky that often has grassy, citrusy notes & a dry finish. Auchentoshan is one well known distillery from this region.
HIGHLANDS
The Highlands covers a vast area, & many of its whiskies are considered “entry level” with a sweet soft finish. There are over 30 distilleries, including heavy hitters like Dalmore & Glenmorangie. But this area also includes the Islands like Talisker, Highland Park, & Oban.
SPEYSIDE
The Speyside region was officially part of the Highlands until 2009. To make it even more confusing, it’s a separate region but also part of the Highlands. It has over 40 distilleries, and more than any other region. This region is known for smooth, & rich single malts like Macallan, & lighter styles such as Glenlivet & Glenfiddich.
ISLAY
The Islay region is on the southernmost island of Scotland. It has a very sunny & windy climate. Most of the whiskies from this island use peat during the kilning process, giving the whiskies a smoky, peaty note. You either love it or hate it. There are 9 working distilleries, all located by the sea. Ardbeg, Lagavulin, & Laphroaig are some well-known distilleries from this region.
CAMPBELTOWN
Campbeltown is my favorite region! There were once over 30 distilleries here, & it was known as the best scotch-producing region in Scotland. Only 3 distilleries remain today: Springbank, Glengyle, & Glen Scotia. A number of factors, like World War 1, the Great Depression, & Prohibition caused a sharp decline in the region.
Let me know in the comments how many regions you knew, and what you want me to deep dive into!
