One of the longer descents in the greater Phoenix area, however, fast and flowy it is not. It’s also a pain to get to. The view from the top is rewarding, though, and if you don’t mind a slower paced descent with a lot of chunk, it’s not too bad. Also, this is about the only downhill in the valley that actually gives me those arm pump feels. Sorry for the length on this one but I wanted to share most of trail on this one...the video cuts out at the end as the descent starts to mellow out. I climbed up Windgate Pass and then over to Bell Pass but honestly, if I did this again, I'd just hike up Bell Pass as it'd probably be faster.

There is a loop from the gateway trail head that takes you to northern saddle by inspiration point. From here the trail wraps around to the southern saddle and the beginning of the video. It’s a bit of a rough ride for sure!

@@SuzukiKid400 the east side (fountain hills side) is better but everything on the southern side of mcdowell is pretty rough. I’d say near impossible to ride up without walking for a few stretches. The north part of mcdowell is much more smooth (pima trailhead, Browns ranch, granite mountain trailheads). Mcdowell regional park just north of fountain hills is also really cool. You can access that general area (Pemberton trail) from Tom’s thumb parking lot but then you’re starting the ride going downhill and have to end a ride with a long but gradual climb.

@@smj460I appreciate your reply! I’m going there in a month for a trip and I’m used to riding PNW flowy trails so a little hesitant about the rocks and jarring features. Your notes helped a lot!
