Young gay folk pay attention. This is why you have so much of the acceptance and freedom you experience today. It's people like Silverster and Boy George and so many others that were not famous, that dare to be themselves and stood up for us when it was not a popular thing to do.

Natália Macedo Funny thing is there has always been a stigma about gender bending that comics like Joan could only call it being a drag queen is no surprise especially given the era this was. Nowadays we have progressed (to a degree,) and can't say tranny. It's just not politically correct.

I met Sylvester at a club called The No Name in Providence Rhode Island in 1985!
He was a sweet kind down to earth human being!
Children I was gonna loose it but he had a calming effect on me.
I asked so many questions and he answered them all.
Mind you he was touring with his Rock The Box album.
He had a keyboard and a microphone & himself alone.
    He tore that place apart.
That falsetto voice was amazing and he knew exactly what he was doing standing behind the synthesizer and dancing and singing his Ass off!
    Rise in power beautiful one!!!🎉🎉🎉💕💕💕😘

Madeleine Hague Brave soul to be himself only to die of AIDS a manufactured virus which started in US in the gay community from the 1978 Hepatitis Vaccine given in NYC. This was a " special" vaccine introduced by a program labeled " Hepatitis B* Vaccine Program* . Africa was the other place this was introduced by Globalist Scum. One reason to this day I hate Nazi manufacturing Merck. Once a Nazi group always a Nazi group. After the war they came here with open arms. HIV is a whole other story separate from AIDS. What an amazing entertainer he was. He wore several costumes, one under the other and as he went into another nonstop song, he would strip off one outfit to reveal another !! Sylvester was so far ahead of his time. I saw him live in the 80's and he was great! I really miss him so much. Really miss him! What a great gay man!

Brilliant!!! People today forget this was b4 Boy George and just how brave Sylvester was to INSIST on being accepted on his own terms. Remember, Reagan didnt even say the word AIDS until sometime into his 2nd term. To borrow a phrase, "it was the best of times it was the worst of times". Loved Sylvester, So miss him!!

I'm glad to see love in the comments and agreement that Sylvester was ahead of his time. But please stop saying that his sexuality doesn't matter. Claiming that his queerness is irrelevant really isn't the compliment you think it is. It influenced his life, his art, and the way he saw the world. Queer community and queer culture are circles that are sacred to queer people, especially those who aren't accepted by their immediate families. In separating Sylvester from his queerness you get somebody else entirely. It's not all he is, but it's an important part of him that a lot of people choose to erase.

Sylvester was an incredible performer and talent. He was so brave to have been out of the closet in the 70s and 80s. Nobody took as many chances as Sylvester did back then.

I saw this cause Im Johnny Carson fan, and when Joan Rivers was hosting, I'd watch for sure, and when he came on to perform, I was shocked, and all I recall saying was "is that a man dressed like a woman"? LOL ANd the audience loved his performance too!! THis was a club floor burner back then.

I love hearing Sylvester with the Two Tons Of Fun. Still, it's good that they went out on their own as "The Weather Girls", as they are far too talented to be mere background singers. At the same time, Sylvester was SO talented that he didn't need background singers. He could definitely hold a song on his own.

Sylvelster was a talent that was well, before his time. He dared to be himself when society wasn't accepting what he was all about but he pathed the way for many to come after him. He embelished in his stardom and had the attitude to go with it but hey, so does other stars who've made it. Sylvester pushed the envelope and made a name for himself in the entertainment world. His job was done. RIP.

I was a nine year old boy watching this performance on the Joan Rivers New Year's eve Show, on a black & white tv on the sink while I sat in a bubble bath--got my dangerous living out of the way before puberty. lol When I met Jeanie Tracy many years later at a Pride celebration, she (good-naturedly) didn't want to be reminded that it was 24 years ago. God, I miss Sylvester.

Let's tip our hats to Joan Rivers. To have, not only the guts to have Sylvester on her show, but not make him a joke.
Yes, she didn't understand he wasn't a drag queen, but people wouldn't get that now with all the acceptance. Hard to believe this was 1987.
RIP Joan, Sylvester, Charles, and Rick. All gone too soon.
