  • In this Vlog I’m exploring the Village of Ewell in Surrey, a once rural Hamlet now engulfed by Greater London and the sprawl of suburbia. An ancient settlement grown out of it’s Ancient Spring, Ewell still holds onto much of its historic past (amongst the constant traffic travelling through) as I find out walking around and discovering its rich heritage.

Thanks for uploading. I grew up in Ewell, from the early 90s, family moving away in 2012. I now live in New Zealand, so watching UA-cam clips is the best way I can "revisit." Certainly looked a beautiful day to visit, and though I Imagine the traffic is now notorious, it seemed peaceful enough on foot.
Interestingly, I believe there was a big gunpower explosion at Hogsmill in the past, and several people died. You can find evidence of this in the gravestones at St Mary's - sorry I don't know the date or even the year!

Many thanks for commenting and glad you enjoyed the video. I think you are correct about the explosion at Hogsmill and may research that tragic incident further .

A couple of years ago it was this beautiful crisp autumn day and me and my brother went for a walk around there. I grew up there and left 25 years ago but never appreciated the beauty and history of that place

I have been going through (not often stopping) Ewell for over 50 years. Great video showing things that bring back fond memories of visiting my Nan in Carnforth Close going towards Chessington. Thanks for a great video!!!

It is amazing just how much history can be discovered and which survives in such ‘villages’. I’ve only ever really passed through on the bus to Wallington. Thanks for making this video, Marq.

You are correct about the tunnels Marq. I have a rare book containing a map of them.
Another point of interest is the dog above the arch into Bourne Hall. Apparently the tail fell of at some point and was replaced with a bulls horn by a local butcher. This could well be a myth of course. That's just what I was told.
Finally worth a mention is the painting 'Ophelia' by British artist Sir John Everett Millais . The setting was the banks of the Hogs Mill River.
    Thanks for the video !

@@MarqEnglish Howdy, born in a house in meadow walk in 66, upper mill was a family home when i was little and i went in the residential part several times. Ive seen the room where the water can be diverted to run the machinery, it was not installed and the sluice was dry, we played football in that dusty big level, the home was above. Set in the most beautiful park with the big pond around the mill house on one side, the hogsmill appeared from under a tunnel on the other. I used to swim and float on an inflatable lilo in that pond with my friends. Near the tunnel was an epic place to catch sticklebacks It became empty for a while then was refurbished and let, changing hands etc. Behind the mill is a path that lead to the bee keepers Apiary, it used to be very busy in there at times and they didn't mind us watching but told us never to go in, not a chance! There are more water sluices and run offs in the park which make it very interesting. Memory says Oliver Reed's involvement was via a company called Ace Pud while it changed hands a few times (as did the lower mill which I've never been in though my childhood garden lead to it. A magical place, Ewell, growing up there and in that era was a gift.
