Wintergatan is rebuilding this Marbel-machine right now making a video about it every week.
He have the top comment on this video so go to his chanal and watch it! it is totaly worth it!

Actually he building a better version with assistance from a team of helpers and several companies. The new machine (Marble Machine X or MMX) will still be mainly plywood but it will have a welded metal stand and 3D Printed pieces. Also the plywood is CNC milled meaning greater precision as the original Marble Machine was cut out all by hand.

  • @RyuyaS17135

There is something universal when reacting to this video for the first time. The interest of the contraption in the thumbnail, then when the video starts, the comments on how starnge or intricate the machine is.
But then, the first marbles fall, and that look of childlike wonder and surprise hits everyone. THAT look, that look just...it gives a giddy sensation when you see others do the same, react with the same raised eyebrows and silence as the music takes over. That realisation of what is happening before you.
And to be able to create something that can envoke such a reaction, Wintergatan certainly deserves all the praise that came with this machine. Just beautiful.

It´s funny you should mention Miyazaki since there is a strong connection there with Sweden. In the movie "Kiki´s delivery service" the aesthetics and architecture of the city is based of Stockholm. And for a very long time he wanted to make a japanese version of a famous Swedish childrens story (Ronja the robbers daughter) but he never got to realize this idea but his son later coul finalize it.
I dont think i need to tell you how much i love both Ghibli and Wintergatan. Been to the Ghibli museeum twice.

  • @HalOBrien

Before player pianos were Jacquard looms, which used the precursors to punch cards. If you ever get a chance to see James Burke's "Connections." you'd probably enjoy it.
As to the playing down... Hey, he's a Swede (said the guy with a wife born in Sweden). It's the culture. (Also, minor thing -- it's said kinda like "vinter-GAW-tin". It's the Swedish word for the Milky Way, and it literally means, "Winter street," or "Snow street.")
Anyway, great video, very infectious enthusiasm. I loved it.

Wintergatan really made something special when he built this machine. If you guys haven't watched his HOW IT WAS BUILT videos then I recommend you watch them.
The whole thing is like "the stuff that dreams are made of".
Yeah, hats off to him for making it.
Also yes, I also saw the still image and thought "I want that"
6:30 Yup, I've seen the inside of a piano. Fascinating indeed. Actually the Wintergatan machine is like a Skeletonized-piano, without panels covering up the working parts. I love how it is all working parts.
Thanks for your React-to video guys
7:50 just so you know the "loop" you referred to is one octave/note higher on the second turn. Wintergatan notes this in his 3rd HOW IT WAS BUILT video
8:58 Yes, this is Davinci-esque... maybe I could attempt Wintergatan-esque? I am so sorry
