Who were the other underrated German players ? I think Uli Stielike is one of them. He was part of Madrid success in late 70s and early 80s. There were only two foreign players at Madrid in 1980/1981 season : him and Laurie "black pearl" Cunningham. Both played in European Cup 1981 final. We are waiting a rematch between Madrid and Liverpool in CL final this month.

You must know Laurie "black pearl" Cunningham, the 1st black player at Madrid who had got standing ovation at Nou Camp after his performance in El Clasico 1980.
If not for injuries and bad habit off the pitch, he could have got more success in his career.

He was quite unique. Always having something slow or old about him. But he was quite effective, had very good long range passing and shooting, a boss vision, could even dribble, and made very surprising things. He was a leader and an artist. There is no player that resembles him.

Very unique, as he even rejected to play for West Germany at WC 1982 after winning Euro 1980. I was disappointed then because I was waiting for him in WC 1982.

That Bernd Schuster today is so forgotten is probably a result of his decision not play for the West-German national team throughout the 80's and 90's.

People don't know about Schuster. He was an in-house German genius when people thought players from that country were just efficient robots. Some of the stuff he does is up there with Ozil or Musiala or anyone that's worn Germany's shirt afterwards.

amazing to see the DFB had no idea how good he was or how to handle him / find a spot for him.
this goes down a long list of failures the biggest football association (memberwise) has come up with n doesn't even know how to manage it's national team nowadays.
Ozil, Müller, Hummels, Boateng, Roland Wohlfarth, Andreas Thom, Effenberg, Löw, Trautmann, Lehmann, Kahn, ter Stegen just to mention a few issues over the last decades without even trying to think

No...he was the classic "Spielmacher" or playmaker...the 10. Back then the Top teams had a playmaker as central midfielder who had free reign. Often a defensive 6 who would compensate for the offense only style these playmakers had. Schuster was the heart of the team....long distance passes, fast short passes....free kicks....corner kicks....the classic 10 didn't do defensive work.
Of course there were exceptions like Lothar Matthäus...who played as 6, 8 or central offensive 10 behind the two strikers.
But players like Diego Maradona, Bernd Schuster or even Krassimir Balakov were organizers and passing machines.
In today's football....De Bruyne has this style...Luka Modric.
In today's time there's often two 8s....the classic interceptor (6) like Dieter Eilts, Gattuso or Javi Martinez is pretty much gone.

Bernd Schuster would be a Barça legend if he wouldn't have abandoned the team after being substituted in that Seville's European Cup final against Steaua in 1986. He left in a taxi without talking to anyone and never came back. Barcelona lost by penalties. He stayed in Barcelona for another couple of seasons (the one after the final he wasn't even listed as a punishment and didn't play a single game) but it never was the same. And to top it off he signed for Real Madrid when he finished his contract in 1988. Such a shame after 8 years at Barça, of which 6 were amazing. He was very talented but also a very troubled man.
