Apologies in advance that this isn't my usual long review. Time has been a bit pressing this weekend with it being a Sunday kick off and not had the usual amount of time to dedicate to the review. Also...there weren't that many talking points!
As I've said before I'm a Blade, always found you balanced and keep things in perspective...honest. Biff Tannen made me laugh, (had to google), he's an absolute collossus though and the best signing we made this season. My Mam's a Wednesdayite and my Dad was aswell, I was born in south Sheffield, my bedroom overlooking Bramall lane and school mates 80% United. You're a good man and it shines through no matter what.
I was born and raised on Leadmill Road from 1956 to '69,but our family were definitely in the minority down there, as Owls fans. My 'Uncle' Bill used to take me to watch United under the misapprehension that I was a blade. Poor fella almost had a stroke when there was a clash of fixtures one weekend and my Dad had to tell him the reason that me and him were never around on the Saturdays that Wednesday were at home 😂
I'm a blade and I agree that it was a very scrappy game, typical Derby game really and the one bit of real quality won it. Gus Hamer was clearly the best player on the pitch and ultimately that is the difference he's arguably a premier league player and it showed, nothing else in it really. Blades defence is good at championship level though to be fair. Wednesday will finish mid table you'll be fine.
To say we are 3points away from the relegation places and they are (now) joint top, there was nothing between the teams. A 0-0 draw would have been a fair result. Onwards and upwards!
very tight game, a draw wouldn' have been an unfair result, but our quality got us through as it has many times this season. When you combine the quality we have with an incredible defensive record, you can see why we have won the most points of any club this season
No we don't,cadz will be back on the bench regardless he needs to stay where he is! Ugbo will come good we arnt giving him the service he needs,not ugbos fault;
Can't fault Ugbo's work rate, the goals will come, but I agree Smith should start, thought Wednesday did well ,just need to get defensive part sorted on set pieces
As a blade, I dont think any serious fan thought we'd give you a hiding. We haven't scored many ourselves this season as our success, so far, has been built on defence. As for you lot I thought you were solid but toothless upfront, bit like us but a few million pounds cheaper. My Dad and older brother are owls, then me, mum and 3 other brothers are Blades. There was a time I REALLY cared about winning this game, especially when you lot were the more dominant team with more money and better players in the early years of the Prem. Maybe one day we can have a meaningful derby in the Prem again one day
I’m a blade, thought it was a nothing game, thought we was awful on the ball first half, think looking back you should’ve started smith and one of musaba/gassama, can’t remember ugbo touching the ball
See a lot saying Wednesday are a work in progress yet United had 3 players starting from last season then brought all the kids on, Seriki Peck One. even as a blade this is a good listen
I'm over it already. Yeah, the sort of game that's going to turn on an inspired moment and sadly it was Hamer who had it. Nice goal mind. I think we were the most enterprising team with less of the ball, but you're right, we should have started Smith. Overall, not too unhappy with it.
1 shot on target won the game, the gulf of quality on paper did’nt show on the pitch. we just did’nt create any chances on the day. i predicted 4 points from the last 3 games, weve ended up with 3 from 3. next few games we need to pick more than that up. we can win all 3 so wanting 9 points from 9. cardiff hull and derby are all beatable.
Was one of the worried ones but quite heartened by that performance. Definitely need more firepower up front or we may be struggling later in the season.
It's never easy breaking down a team that would settle for a 0-0 win just like they have done on the three previous occasions. This time the Blades found that one bit of class they needed (just the one is all it took). UTB
Interesting to hear the Wednesday perspective - when I was young I spent as much time at Hillsborough as at Bramall Lane as I had mates who are Owls. Beating you is as good as it gets but it would be great to get us both in the PM. The first derby I went to we beat you 3-2 when Tudor came off the bench and put the ball through Grummits legs - happy days
Smith should definitely have started as we both said on your live. Just hardlines. Decent performance. Smith Penalty...imagine that in Premier League at somewhere like Anfield. Straight Pen!
It's Tuesday and it's still hurting a bit Jim 😂😣😣. Love your videos and live stream Jim, it's like free therapy for me at times haha. Couple of week off to recover and onto Cardiff at Hillsborough, let's use this as motivation and get straight back on the horse so to speak. Hi ho silver..... Awaaay!! 💙🦉🤍 x
It was obviously going to be a cagey affair and a tight game; it was Owls fans who were going OTT after the Watford debacle and scared of getting a right tonkin'. Blades fans generally know the truth about our approach this season. After the farcical "defensive" horrors of last season Wilder took the correct decision to bring in height and muscle, and build a winning team from the back, bringing in youthful midfield energy to replace the old legs of last season. This young squad bears very little resemblance to that in the Premier last season, but unless we miraculously conjure up another Illiman we will not be stuffing 4 or 5 goals past anyone soon. As the season progresses I'm expecting that goal difference to increase gradually. The return match at Hillsborough will be interesting....
I absolutely concur with your bafflement at the Johnson/Smith exchange Jim. It made no sense whatsoever and, yes, Smudger should have started the game. You can't be sentimental in a derby, and I think that leaving Ugbo in the starting line-up was a mis-step by Danny.
I know it’s a loss against out lovely neighbours, but you can honestly see a decent side emerging at Wednesday. As everyone knows, we need some serious investment on the playing side. I just hope Danny doesn’t get frustrated and do one, over the lack of foresight from our glorious chairman. But at the moment I’m feeling fairly upbeat.
Enjoyable as always, Jim. I don't share your pessimism about Wednesday's chances of equalising with 40+ minutes to go, though. With hindsight you're right, of course, but there were some promising moments - Iorfa at point blank range, following a corner, Musaba clear in the box but (still) incapable of lifting his head and looking for a pass once he's beaten a couple of defenders........Wilder was on edge. The key now, after another pointless break for Mickey Mouse football, is to perform like that consistently for the next ten games. I'm hopeful but, sadly, I'm not holding my breath!
Thanks, mate. Only able to see the highlights ( living abroad) but I would agree, there seems to be nothing to be ashamed of with that performance. Read some accusations against the defence (Beadle) for their goal. Give over! It was a quality goal and fair do to them for that! I am convinced when Ugbo gets one, he’ll go on a spree! So, no licking of wounds necessary - just got to get through another boring break 😂
Was a fairly even game throughout. Both teams had their spells in the game, and they capitalised on their best spell (first 15 mins of the second half). One moment of quality won it, which is often the case in Derby games. They have much more attacking quality than us so that's just the way it goes. We move on.
Hi mate ,hope aok with you and your's. Most owls fans I know questions why Smith did not start. For me, as you remarked, played Marv with Smith and for me, Gasama with Ugbo. BUT, hey ho we were certainly not disgraced and it is now on to the next one. WAWAW
If I am being honest, I thought the best we would get was a draw on form, but it was a derby and you know what derbies are like. At least it wasn't the 5-0 drubbing the blunt fans were predicting all over social media. I mean, they were pretty disappointed with a 1-0 victory, at work this morning, considering the table positions
I'm presuming Marv was taken off after getting that knock in the first half and spraining his wrist...ni effective crosses at all in the second half which was disappointing - I wish Gassama and Musaba would stop reading their JJ's guide to football manuals and learn to look up a tad and use a bit more common sense - Danny's sticking with Ugbo as thd main man up top for a while I'm guessing - dropping him would destroy him completely confidence wise... Cardiff up next his old team so let's see if he can break his duck then. Back to the Derby - we did ok and stopped them quite effectively and put a foot in where neccesary...miladdo they spent 10m plus on from Coventry was the difference between the two sides - he's a good little player and somehow created alot of space for himself to play simple effective balls in... one moment of quality won it. Onwards and Midtableness we go!!
Cant agree with that im sorry to say embarrassing to be happy with 1-0 defeat with 0 zero shots on target. Is that what we have come to. Decision making is poor and we are poor on the ball. Valery isnt good enough. Windass ineffective. We will be bottom end of table.
It was quite a balanced view for a most of the vid. Honest review, well done. But I have to say SUFC players are on 40k and have a parachute payment…. Why? Because they went to the premier league! That’s what happens if you get to the premier league.. ⚔️
We def DID NOT expect to ‘spank you’ - beat u yeah def but new it would be tight! U put 11 behind the ball first half and only ventured in to our half at 1-0. Poor game decided by one bit of quality
Yep I agree, proud of the lads. I would have had Smith in from the start. Subs were not what I would have done, certainly wouldn’t have taken inglesson and Johnson off that early. I would have brought Mus on and dropped Johnson back then replaced Ugbo with Smith but we are all experts aren’t we 😮
Good analysis of the game! Like you said Smith should have started the game at least ,he unsettled their defenders! Defence & midfield were quite soild. I wish that our strikers had got at their defence more & even tested their keeper when we made our substitutions! All in all we definitely didn’t embarrass ourselves or fail to turn up as many ex players, managers & fans had worried about! We can now move on with the rest of the season & make progress with a settled first 11 & get points on the table! Ps I’m glad this is the last bloody international break this year! 🦉💙🦉UTO!!!
Wednesday clearly had a game plan make it a physical encounter and to take turns kicking lumps out of Arblaster aided by a poor referee. It sort of worked as United had to replace Arblaster and had their worst home performance this season. But quality told with the goal and it was the right result in the end.
Just watched to the end of this review. It's interesting to listen to all the talk about "big hitters on 40 grand a week" etc... Let's remind ourselves here that Chris Wilder got us from the foot of (the 3rd Division) to the Premier League on the square root of sod all, whilst the Chancer has pumped in significant Tuna Pie money over a number of years and even gone as far as tapping loyal fans for long-term mortgage money on generational season tickets and creatively juggling accounting periods to eke out a little extra here and there along the way. The gap between the clubs in terms of structural investment alone is far bigger than it should be given where you were some 25 years ago, and almost 10 years before that - do you not agree?
You have to laugh, Wednesday fans have gone from celebrating wins, to celebrating draws to now celebrating defeats…..as long as it’s not a “spanking” 😂😂😂😂😂
Played well, good performance. They had one chance all game and took it. I thought we looked the better team going forward, just lacked that little bit of quality to create anything clear cut. Valery was wasteful 3/4 times in good positions unfortunately. Looked superb defensively. Charles’ screening was top notch again. Shouldn’t be happy with losing to them, but for some reason at FT I didn’t feel gutted and I think things are going in the right direction. If you take the Derby aspect out of it, that’s a pleasing performance from us. Oh and on a side note, how quiet were they to say they were winning/won a Derby 😮. Only sang when they played that terrible chip song. Was weird. WTID UTO 🦉
Because we were shite that's why aside from 10 minutes in the second half. All round atmosphere was shocking. One end of the away end singing hi ho, famous Sheffield Wednesday, I love you Wednesday for 10 seconds a handful of times is awful support as well.
Was a very cagey game but im sure under Carlos you was throwing 40k wages out if we're being realistic... Rhodes, Hooper and so on.... Blades have been in prem 3 times in last 25 years..... so built there wage bill on how successful they are
As a blade yes we were poor worst we've played all season, but a bit ov magic won it ,but are we not a work in progress youngest side in championship 4 academy players on pitch just saying UTB 😂
10/10 for Biff Tannen, almost wet myself not because of old age, for a change. I'm not buying meh though, pal. With a few exceptions, derby matches have nearly always been tight, drab affairs. It made the last derby match at BDTBL look like Holland Vs Argentina 1978 WCF. I think your video is a lot shorter than normal because you'd run out of excuses and just started blubbing, so the last ten minutes found its way to the cutting room floor, now more commonly known as the recycling bin. You talk about Gus Hamer like he's Ronaldinho. But yes, one minute of class sealed it once your team buses parking ticket had run out and you had to move it from the goal line to Cherry Street. COYRAWW. All seriousness, enjoyed the video, will watch more in the coming weeks.
He's one of them in-between players I reckon, where he's too good for this division, but prob not going to set Prem alight. That's problem with modern football and the money. There's a lot of players in that bracket, but the money has made the Prem/Championship gulf a chasm.
These derbys are turning into Merseyside derby’s where blues more than often loose we haven’t found back of their net in four games I for one ain’t happy uto
I went to my son's wedding today (11/11/24 in NZ). We were both just happy that the Blades won, as the previous three derby games finished 0 - 0. As you say, your beloved Owls at least made them work for it and I agree with your summing up of the game (as your Blades mates obviously do). All the very best for the remainder of the season.
Pissed off with the loss but not the performance.. Only concern is Ugbo and lowe what is going on with them I really hope they start scoring sooner rather than later I was over the moon when these two came in if they don't start scoring we will have to bring in strikers in January
I wouldn't swop any of Wednesday's players for United's "pen knives" , (sharp, but more suitable for less substantial jobs, (laundramatic promotion) , "Have you whiffed this team Bertie? They're quite Peterboroughesq at home!"
What is wrong with you and most Wednesday boyz, we lost and history books will always show it. they won and I'm gutted they got 3 points a clean sheet and top of the league how can you or anyone associated with Wednesday be so relaxed about losing to them??!! Seriously we would need to win our next 10 games to even remotely start to get over that loss . I've watched us win there in 1967 then we lost in the same year to a poxy goal from Bill puntin and I haven't got over that one yet so clearly it'll be at least 50 years to contemplate this loss !. We lost and I give none out of 10 to all the players and Danny rohl is getting things wrong consistently 😮
We're struggling for goals and just lost 1-0 to a team that hasn't lost at home all season , not conceded a goal at home since August. I mean, I'd have loved to have won, but a tight game decided by one goal was likely always on the cards.
I’m a blade, thought it was a nothing game, thought we was awful on the ball first half, think looking back you should’ve started smith and one of musaba/gassama, can’t remember ugbo touching the ball

Was a very cagey game but im sure under Carlos you was throwing 40k wages out if we're being realistic... Rhodes, Hooper and so on.... Blades have been in prem 3 times in last 25 years..... so built there wage bill on how successful they are
The more I listen to this chap I’m wondering whether or not the outcome was a defeat for Wednesday.😂
If you look at our home wins it’s only by one or two goals.
Aye I know. That's why I said it'd be a 1-0 before the game!
As a blade yes we were poor worst we've played all season, but a bit ov magic won it ,but are we not a work in progress youngest side in championship 4 academy players on pitch just saying UTB 😂
Aye, I was talking to Utd mate at work today and both commented on number of kids on your bench last night
Nothing between teams in the one game maybe.....but united are absolutely light-years in front of poor Wednesday
Things to think about on the horizon Jim.🤔🦉
Paying that tax bill is tip of the list
@sheffcam4960 yeah, I agree. I was (friendly) goading you a bit :)
"No shame in losing to our main city rivals" is all I keep hearing, would there be no shame for united if the goal went the other way?
FOTTY GRAND
Trough will be flooded again 😂
Make it to 20 mins 1-1 90+6
UTB get in 😢😢😢
They probably might go a whole season unbeaten by only scoring just 2 goals 😂😂😂
I wouldn't swop any of Wednesday's players for United's "pen knives" , (sharp, but more suitable for less substantial jobs, (laundramatic promotion) , "Have you whiffed this team Bertie? They're quite Peterboroughesq at home!"
Laugh of the Day this comment!
Fair assessment, thought blunts came out firing in the second half and that little bit of quality won the game.
So bitter
It wasn't so bad. UTO
Calm down mate
😂😂
I agree let's have some ambitions
We're struggling for goals and just lost 1-0 to a team that hasn't lost at home all season , not conceded a goal at home since August. I mean, I'd have loved to have won, but a tight game decided by one goal was likely always on the cards.
FFS what pitty party going on in your head 🤣Grow a pair man, take the loss and move on
Up the blades
I’m a blade, thought it was a nothing game, thought we was awful on the ball first half, think looking back you should’ve started smith and one of musaba/gassama, can’t remember ugbo touching the ball
Aye, they're not the blood and thunder affairs they used to be. Very tight. Think it was always going to be a draw or nicked by the odd goal
