  • FASCO Charleston 52" ceiling fan in antique brass, the first of four Charlestons that I recently saved from a local closed restaurant. These specific fans were massively important childhood fans, some of the early ones I saw that really drove my fascination because they had such different details. FASCO apparently did have some distribution up here, but what I've seen of it is very limited. This installation was the only FASCO I saw at the local level all through my childhood, with Disney World being the only other limited exposure. This fan is probably in the worst cosmetic condition of them all, which says a lot considering they lived in a restaurant for a few decades, because it's not even too bad. Worst remaining parts are some fading of finish on the badges, and darkening of the finish on the canopy. On the blades, it was like portions of clear lacquer had separated from the finish. I tried several things, but couldn't remove it or buff it with anything, so I ended up lightly sanding and rubbing a new overlay of finish back on because they looked simply awful. It's not perfect and there's still a little haze in some areas, as I was not looking to do an entire refinish job, but overall they look pretty good. They're just not quite the original FASCO look and finish anymore, being a bit more smooth and matte in appearance. I'm still cleaning as this video goes live, but these fans were coated in some of the toughest greasy residue I've yet encountered. Underneath, they're mostly cleaning up quite well, but I've had to let the blades sit with paper towels soaked in Simple Green and fully scrub the housings with warm water and Dawn to get them clean. Thankfully, these particular FASCO finishes are very resilient and mostly standing up. These fans seem to have been serviced at some level through the years, as the shaft bushings appear well-greased, and in this particular fan, the pull chain was wire-nutted back in, so I know someone's been in it before. With that considered, so far they seem to run well. Maybe slightly dry bearings, but still smooth. I am not doing any bearing replacements at this time; I just want to get them clean and any that may need it will be a future project.

One is amazing enough, but FOUR! You really got lucky! Not to mention that they are the exact childhood ones I remember you mentioning before. I always will love FASCO more than most other brands. Too bad they are so uncommon around here. I bet you could use a set of these blades on that other antique brass one you have next time you do a remake. My real question is, how did you manage to get in and save them? Was it an auction like some of the past restaurant hauls or did the owner let you in?

I'm so pumped about having these, the fact that they're cleaning up pretty well is icing on the cake. Twas a frustrating experience on these. 😒 Before Christmas, local media published a story about the building, including an interview with the owner/architect of the project. You bet your bottom dollar I had an email out the next morning fishing for info on if I could get in for the fans. The actual guy replied and said they'd love that, and they'd be in touch in the new year when they were ready. Great. Perfect. I still drove by the building every few days just to keep an eye; I don't trust people with this stuff after I lost some promised TATarms from our JCPenney Salon years ago. Anyway, fast forward a couple weeks, I see news that there's an auction for items in the building. I'm like, surely, those fans are not on there since I just talked to the guy. Nope. They were on the auction. So I waited until the end before bidding and certainly planned to win. I could've spent hundreds here and still come out ahead with the rarity of FASCO in these parts, would cost hundreds to ship in four equivalent Charlestons and I knew they were in fair condition at worst. All this time I heard nothing from the guy, then a couple days after I'd picked them up, he emails back and was like "sorry but we had an auction where the fans sold and I hoped they wouldn't sell so you could have them". My guy, wouldn't you maybe want to LET ME KNOW you're having the auction since I told you how sentimental they were to me? Like it's fine, I'll pay whatever and you can have your bag too, but I could've missed out entirely if I wasn't paying the utmost attention. I replied with something civil and that I'd still won them, because maybe he'll think of me in the future with other projects, but I was not amused.

@@vfandm That sounds seriously frustrating! I have dealt with people who are like that but to that extent. I am glad you got them!
